I dont know if this has been discussed but who here has had the pleasure of watching the Prequel Trilogy first and then watching the original trilogy second? Basically getting to see everything in order and having a lot of questions being answered.
My mother did and loved it, she said that Palpatine must have been brain damaged from being deformed by the lightning and that Darth Vader was very sad was only barely worthy of redemption because of his actions, she said that only his Son and the knowledge of Leia his daughter made Anakin repent because he could not let himself stand by and watch another member of his family die without stopping it from happening as he did with his wife when he choked her and could have controlled himself, also said that Vader repented because he knew that Palpatine was trading him for Luke just like Palpatine traded Count Dooku in for Anakin Skywalker and knew that the Sith were liars and decievers and didnt want to be one anymore because of that and his guilt for doing what he did as he watched his son get tortured to death.
Sounds like watching the Prequels first gives you a better insight into Star Wars, i wish i had that chance now too, whos been lucky like that on here?
A Literature forum Moderator named Rogue Follower closed my thread in the Literature board months ago before my recent Vacation so i didnt any answers there so i re-pasted it here where he suggested, sorry for doing two threads in one day too, but i havent been around too much.

I'd be interested to hear what people who started from The Phantom Menace having never seen any of the films thought while watching it. I always thought that the first half hour or so of TPM must be a bit disorientating for anyone who had never seen a SW movie before. What was it about TPM that made you want to watch the rest? And what was it like going from ROTS to ANH with no idea of what happened in the original trilogy?

I grew up in the 1980's buddy i watched ROTJ as a little kid and ESB and ANH later on VHS, i just wish that i had the chance to see TPM first and then AOTC,ROTS,ANH,ESB and finally ROTJ all in full order, of course fitting the Clone Wars Cartoon and the Ewoks Movies in their appropriate places too, maybe i will do that sometime too, i recently watched all of the Exorcist movies in full order, the two new ones first and then the original ones next 1 and 2, i havent seen the Exorcist part 3 yet though, i still have to rent that, but it shows the past and building up of events better if watch them in order IMHO.
I just wish i had watched them all in order, even my brothers teenagers havent done that.

Exorcist 3 has one of the best scares ever in it
BTW I wasn't directing the questions to you mate but to others who may post that started with the prequels before seeing the OT

I did! My first encounter with SW was in 2005, when I watched ROTS in the movies. At that time, I knew nothing of SW, I was just looking for some entertainment on a Saturday evening. I come from Indonesia and knew nothing about the Jedi, Sith, Force, etc. I didn't know that the entire saga was already complete, and at the end of the movie I wondered when the next episode would come out (!!).
But I absolutely, absolutely love the film. I remember feeling very sorry for Anakin at the end of the film. After exiting the theater, I contemplated about what a sad movie I'd just watched. It wasn't until 8 months later, when I was browsing through a TV programs guide (January 2006 was "SW month" for the TV channel Cinemax), that I found out that there're SIX episodes, and that the saga was already complete! I quickly recorded the whole saga (1-6) and watched the whole thing. Needless to say, I became even more captivated by SW (esp. the prequels) and am now an avid SW fan!
I closely identified with Anakin because we're very similar. I could understand what he's going through. I also like Padmé for her charm, poise and loyalty. I like the PT better because in the OT, everything's black and white, good people vs. evil people and so forth. PT shows that everything has 2 sides. I am a Christian, and I've found the PT to greatly strengthen my faith. It shows that no one is "good", not even the Jedi. Many hated Vader for killing younglings, but IMO the Jedi killed Anakin by mistrusting him, just as many parents killed their children by abusing them, ignoring them, shutting them up, manipulating them, or treating them as less than human beings. I can closely identify with this (but that's another topic for discussion...). All of us are sinful, and Anakin's sin is no greater than Yoda's or Mace's (read my other posts for more explanation). In the end, we all need redemption, that's why Christ came into the world.

Wow, that's awesome. Are you glad you experienced the way you did? Or do you sort of wish you had started with the OT?

I still believe that the right way to watch the saga is IV, I, II, V, III, VI. But I see the logic in watching the saga in chronological order.

I saw them in release order, but have since watched them in chronological order and in my preferred order (4,5,1,2,3,6) The latter works for me because it avoids the huge technological gap of going from 3 to 4 and it also gets to the "I am your father" point, goes back to explain that and then concludes the saga.

When I first saw episodes four, five, and six I was really little and I did not really remember them so I guess you could say I saw the prequels first. It helps I would say to a degree but honestly you could watch all 6 over and over and chances are you'll still pick up on things you may have missed the first time.

No, I don't mind at all.
My thinking is that the core story is the OT. You start with ANH as the framework for the core story. ANH's a stand alone film and you learn about the central characters. You also learn about Obi-Wan's and Anakin's friendship, that they fought in the Clone Wars, and that Anakin was a Jedi.
Then you see TPM and AotC as flashbacks to the time when Obi-wan and Anakin were going on their adventures. It takes both of the characters up to the start of the Clone Wars.
ESB continues the primary story and we get the reveal that Anakin is Vader.
RotS shows us how Anakin falls and becomes Vader. (The only problem is that it also prematurely reveals that Leia is Luke's sister. In ESB, Yoda says that there's another but it's not revealed until RotJ. It's not a major problem but I concede that the viewing order does not protect this secret/reveal)
RotJ shows Anakin's redemption through his son. It completes the primary saga's arc and brings total and complete resolution.

I watched A New Hope when I was 8 and hated it. Then The Phantom Menace came out which I loved (I was only 9 at the time). After that I watched Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I wish that I had been born late enough to watch them all in order. One way I found of "shaking things up" and keeping it interesting is to watch 4,5,1,2,3,6. then you see Vader and Luke and find out that Vader is Anakin. Once you know that you watch Anakin become Vader and then Vader becoming Anakin again.

I first watched ESB on a poorly-recorded-from-TV VHS when I was 13, and thought it was pretty good. Then when i was 19 I bought the entire series and watched them in chronological order. So i could say that I truly started with the prquels. I personally always see them chronologically, cause I like to watch in the story line. however, this poses a small problem when jumping from ROTS to ANH. When I fist saw ANH (after watching ROTS) I was severly disappointed with it. It seems in that way, that Obi-Wan & Vader have lost all thier Jedi/Sith skills, especially in dueling! After seeing Anakin duel Obi-wan spectacularly in ROTS, and then have this totally crap duel in ANH is just dissapointing. So I'd say ppl should start with the OT if they already like SW, if the don't, or have no idea, they should start with the PT. I personally prefer the PT many times over.

This is actually better suited for the Star Wars Saga forum, seeing as it addresses the Saga as a whole, not just the PT.
Personally, I have always enjoyed watching it IV-III. It was how I was raised, and I just find it's better told that way. Imagine a world where you already know Darth Vader is Luke's father.

For me, Anakin is like a metaphor for not only all of the other characters in the saga, but for humans in general. He is "everyman" to me. As for the other characters, they may not have become Sith Lords, but like Anakin, they had lost their ways and fallen to their own version of "the Dark Side".
