Question regarding Dooku
|
Hello all,
I'm new here and I'm sorry if this has been asked before.
Why is it that the novelization as well as the movie portray Dooku as surprised by his death at Anakin's hand?
As a Sith, wouldn't he be aware of the whole "Only two at any one time, a Master and an Apprentice"?
You would think that he would've seen Anakin as being groomed as his replacement that way Sidious talked about him.
Any thoughts?

The novel makes it pretty clear Dooku thought he was going to be the Sith Master, with Palpatine running the show and Anakin being in charge of the "Sith Army" which was to be the rebuilt Jedi Order.

I can't come up with a better idea myself, but when I read about this Sith Army stuff I thought it sounded unrealistic and lame. One would think Palpatine would have to come up with a better lure than that to fool Dooku into blindly walking to his death, as I would think that someone with only half a brain would think this whole idea of "Hey we can have 3 Sith, we'll form a big ol Sith army, it'll be great, no tension at all" is kind of shady.
Of course they had to come up with something, and I can't think of a better way to fulfill this plot point, but I don't think it really works.

The look on Dooku's face when he relazes he was being played the whole time is priceless.
"Kill him now"
"I helped you rise to power in the Clone Wars, and this is how you repay me?!"

I always thought (from the films) Dooku was in the dark when it came to the strong relationship between Palpatine and Anakin. Just as Palpatine said in ROTJ to Luke, paraphasing "young fool, not only at the end do you truly see...." Dooku was blinded by his own personnal ambition. It was not until the end, that he recognized that he was played a chess piece.

In addition to having good tailors. The Sith seem to be snappy dressers.

RE: Question regarding Dooku

Well, did we ever truly get a clear answer if Dooku knew Sidious= Palpataine? I've read so much EU, but I can't recall any for the life of me right now.
What I do recall from the books I've read is Dooku's suspicions of Anakin, and his jelousy. He knew that the boy was promising and that Sidious took a great interest in him. What I remember about the scene is that Dooku was promised no harm would come to him, this was just an excersize and test for Anakin. IIRC, Palpataine told Dooku that if Anakin defeated him in combat, he'd tell him just to capture him, and if Anakin was defeated then he was not worthy.

Yeah, he knew. That's he gave Palps that what the frak look when he told Anakin to kill him.

Yes, Dooku knew Palpatine=Sidious. He was the only other person-besides Sidious, of course-who knew the entire plot.

If other EU wasn't definitive, there is a conversation between Dooku and Palpatine aboard the Invisible Hand prior to the duel in the ROTS novel that confirms that Dooku knew.

To amplify DarthBoba's point, Dooku believed that he was the Chosen One.
At least, it is strongly hinted at.
