When Obi-wan was fighting Darth Maul, after Qui-gon had been killed, did Obi-wan give into his anger (as a lighter way of saying on the verge of the dark side). Obi-wan looked incredibly angry and most likely wanted to destroy Maul. In the way they fought as well you could see Obi-wan was acting more like Luke in Return of the Jedi. This scene, to me, paralleled the scene where Luke goes all out against Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi.

I think he absolutely gave in. Not only can you see his impatience to begin the fight, but the rage on his face when they lock sabers. He performs better when using that anger, and begins to match Maul's pace, but it ultimately costs him because he gets tunnel-vision. Once he calms down and focuses on using the Force, he is able to win.

He was and he fought superbly against Maul. He was using his natural adrenaline rush.

It tends to be made out that Maul had it easy (before being killed), but Kenobi out fought him with his sword and was caught like a sucker by the push.

Obi-Wan felt helpless at the moment Qui-Gon died, but he knew that he could not fall to the Dark Side. It was Hollywood, so maybe he Ewan was supposed to show frustration in the movie.

I agree. I think Obiwan's anger is a good forshadow to how powerful you become when you tap into anger, but also how vunerable you become because of it.

I think that Obi-Wan was definitely drawing on some anger during that scene. His master had just been cut down before his eyes which would be enough to elicit a rage from anyone. While he drew on his anger, he eventually got it under control which led to the death of Darth Maul.

In the EU, Obi Wan even admits to himself and the council he had given in. But luckily Obi Wan realized he was tapping into the darkside while hanging in the shaft. He had to calm down, be at one with the force, before he was able to work around Maul's flaws and find a way to defeat him with the lightside.

I always saw it more as recklessness rather than agression, maybe because i always have that line from ESB where Yoda is telling Luke he's reckless, and Ben replies "So was i, if you remember". tongue

Unlike the older more calm Kenobi, who usually thinks beforehand about his course of action, we got a glimpse at a young Obi-Wan who simply reacted to his master getting killed before him, without really thinking.

I think of Obi-Wan's Dark Side brush as being his impetus to being the rockin' Jedi Master he becomes by ROTS. He spent most of the duel getting kicked around by Maul; suddenly, his anger gets aroused and he's all of a sudden mopping the floor with Maul. Of course, he quickly realizes that there's no reason he couldn't be that good without using his anger and thirteen years later, we have Obi-Wan, the dude who turned the Chosen One into a parapalegic without much more than some ash burns on his clothes.

I agree that Obi Wan was a spectacular Jedi Master and was well skilled with a Lightsaber. But George shows these things in the movie, and then contradicts Obi Wan's skills with the Dooku fights where he gets knocked out twice.

It wasn't a contradiction, Obi-Wan just wasn't as good as Count Dooku. That confuses lots of people, but that's just the way it worked out. It's like a boxer beating a karate master, then the karate master knocking out a wrestler, then the wrestler besting the boxer. Strange, but it happens.

Seems an obvious parallel to me. Obi Wan gets peeved, but thus becomes over confident/shortsighted. Falls. But regains himself to save the day. It's echoed throughout Star Wars. Well, echoed in a sense that lightsiders get it..... ;-)

Obi-Wan did give in to his anger. Maul honestly didn't defeat Obi-Wan in dueling. Whatever made Sidious think that Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan would be no match for him, I'm not sure.

But Kenobi's anger worked against him in that instant.

I never thought Obi-wan was tapping into the Dark Side or fighting with anger. He was fighting with passion, with purpose. It became personal for him, but he wasn't fighting out of anger. Maul never spoke; he didn't try and draw upon Kenobi's anger and the young Jedi wasn't swinging in a blind rage. Maul caught him off guard with that push, the same way he was able to strike down Qui-gon. He saw an opportunity and took it. In that one split second, Maul took the battle. His own recklessness and arrogance led to his own undoing.

Obi Wan did tap the dark side, for a bit.
