Even if he could not take 10 guards with blasters he would have sensed through the Force if an attack was imminent and could have just run off before they fired a shot. Also, Qui Gon might think the same thing and also consider Maul deflecting shots back and killing a guard or two or even Padme. Therefore he steps forward and they take on Maul rather than bring the guards into this.

It seems to me that it was clear that whatever fight was going to occur, engaging maul was going to slow down whatever force attempted it.. Since the Jedi were already clear that they wouldn't fight their wars for them, it seemed natural for me that the Naboo folks would let the Jedi handle this guy while they headed towards their main objective: the throne room.

They "took the long way" because of Maul. Shooting him would take a second.

A Jedi/Sith has faster then normal reflexes. He would easily be able to whip his lightsaber out faster then they could blink.

I disagree... Fights with force users are not typically short in what I've seen... On the other hand, did the Naboo people know that...probably not! So yeah...maybe they should have at least fired a few shots, which would get richochet off of Panaka.. hehehehe..."oooh...maybe we should go the long way.."

The people of Naboo had a beef with the Trade Federation, particularly, the Droid army. No one other than Quigon and Obiwan really knew who Darth Maul was-he was not a known enemy to Naboo citizens. Qui-gon stating they would handle it, takes care of the situation.

I don't think that in the 5 seconds they had to think about it, they got any further than "who the...." in their minds before Qui-Gon spoke up. Maul isn't exactly your average looking citizen out for a stroll, nor your common battlefront enemy. He was an anomoly. Even if he'd been described before, that old description would take a moment to register. Qui-Gon spoke up pretty quick.

They could have killed Maul if they all opened fire on him at the same time, imo. But if they did, then there would have been no cool saber battle to watch.

I think the possibility of Padme getting killed was one of the main factors like someone mentioned. The Naboo guards didnt really know what to make of Darth Maul. They knew about Jedi but i doubt that the citizens had much clue how to deal with a sith, let alone even knowing what one was. Jedi were supposed to be friendly and if this guy started attacking them, who knew what would happen to Padme. So i think they were waiting for someone to know what to do. Since Qui-Gon said the jedi will handle it, they took it as he knew what was best for the queen and their mission and just went on their way.

They didn't open fire on Darth Maul cuz then it would be too easy for him to kill the queen.
It was too risky imo.

i tihnk xxANAKINxx got it - although I wouldn't recommend trying this at home, "kids".... ; ) The door opens and there is this guy, not holding a blaster or anything, all in black, just STANDING THERE, all very weird, and I do think we have to recall that the palace was not a "free fire zone". That is, I don't think it was safe to assume that anyone who was encountered could just be gunned down on sight.
By the time their wits were gathered (the troops with QuiGonn), QuiGonn had made it clear that the Jedi would handle this.

Shadow-Jedi is right, put yourself in their shoes. When I saw the film I was stunned, and I was in a freaking theater! They probebly were freaked out by this mysterious figure. So when Qui-Gonn says the Jedi can handle it they booked it. I would have too. I'd pat him on the back and say "Godspeed, Rob Roy."
