If Dooku beats Anakin then there would be a sith Temple full of sith warriors. Read the Rots novel. He would start his own sith acedememy.

I understand that the Dooku beating Anakin would signal to Palpatine that Anakin was not ready. The question was more: where do they go from there?

How do they release Anakin in a way that doesn't expose Palpatine as a Sith and doesn't raise suspicions by the other non-Sith separatists. I mean, if Dooku disarmed Anakin, does he just say: "guess you're not ready to be a Sith, you and the chancellor are free to go."

What happens to Palpatine? Anakin is defeated, Dooku has to keep Palpatine to appease the Separatists, he can't rightly let Palpatine go without making Grievous suspicious as to why he would have risked his life in capturing Palpatine in the first place. So if Palpatine remains Dooku's hostage (even just for show), that removes him from galactic politics as he won't be able to reveal himself as Sidious, or would he? And his opponents in the senate could gain influence with him gone. The question wasn't so much about what happens to Anakin, Lucas said he'd be let go. But how is he let go? What happens to Palpatine? How does Mas Amedda justify Order 66 in Palpatine's absence? If it was revealed to Anakin that the whole thing was a test and that he would be let go, surely he'd run back and tell the Jedi like Mace, the only difference would be that Mace could transfer power back to the senate without having to move against Palpatine, as Palpatine would still be a "hostage."

As for the "temple full of Sith" idea... Dooku would still be Sidious' apprentice. And if Dooku was convinced that a Sith Academy would be established, then that just raises more questions. Without Anakin to ultimately replace Dooku, Dooku might expect Palpatine to make good on promises that Palpatine had no intention of ever keeping. So, then what?
