Darthbane2007 posted: I think the OP was asking how would Shmi react, if she was somehow able to see her son from beyond the netherworld.
Well, if you look closely at what the OP wrote, they clearly were speaking of Shmi in the present, had she survived the Tusken ordeal
GS335 posted: I think the whole thing just might have depressed her so much that she would've died of a broken heart, like Padme did.
At least thats how I took it.

Shmi would be tore up over it, but she's seems to be too strong of a person to die of a broken heart because of it. She might hit the bottle and go into a depression, but I think she would pull through and live her life or afterlife.

And this had remained even when he was a Jedi. As long as he knew she was alright, he was fine. But when he sensed she was in danger, he promptly disregarded everything else. He runs to save her without caring what the Jedi or anybody else thinks, because she was still essentially his entire world. He still needed her, he needed her to be his mother and to be that safe anchor he could always depend on. He wanted to free her, to know she would always be there for him, and that was really what mattered to him. Not the Jedi, and to an extent, not Padme. And when he went to his mother, in his mind he was that little boy again, trying to protect her and keep her safe.
But when she died, his whole world collapsed. His emotional stability, his security, his confidence in himself, most of that was dependant on her. Without her, he had nothing. His emotional state was such that he even attacked children, taking out anyone and anything in his pain and rage. And when it was done, he was numb and dead inside. He packed up the dead body of his mother, to bury her. I imagined he cried while carrying the dead weight of his mother's body, and knowing she was gone forever.
Anakin's biggest problem is thinking the lives of others are his responsibility. He assigned himself the keeper of his mother though that is totally inappropriate. But it's common with single mothers that have a boy. He sees himself as the man of the family. Even in TPM novel, it noted that he took beatings for Shmi. A little child! He always felt responsible for her, and felt tremendous guilt that he couldn't care for her. I think Cliegg being hurt and all that just reconfirmed that only he was meant to protect her. No one else could, and he let her down.
He did the same with Padme, though it was foolish. Think of how he was reunited with Padme. Her line of work was always risky, and she knew it. She accepted it. She didn't even react to news that she was going to die. She seemed to accept it as an inevitability. Anakin never could, and that is what made him so messed up.
That pic is pretty fraking creepy SSS.
Well, now we know where Anakin got his tall thin body from, and inhuman scrappiness.............

If Shmi hadn't died, Anakin would not have gone dark, so she would never have to face that situation. It was all Shmi's fault for dying.

There could of been alternative Ways that Anakin could have turned to the Darkside.

As long as those alternate ways don't involve Anakin crying his eyes out, whining and sobbing as he becomes Darth Vader, I'd be all for it.

He could've easily become Vader in AOTC. I mean, Obi Wan on his back about his lightsaber, no love from Padme, the only person who pays interest to him is an old creepy politician and to top it off his mother dies.
Then again, this is the possibility if Shmi didn't die right? Still, thats enough to drive a sane man craz-y.

But Shmi was the turning point, the first time Anakin gave into his dark nature.

I'd like to put it in terms that OT-Vader said himself: meaning when Anakin slew the Tusken camp it was the first time he completely released his anger which led him to give into his hatred and that allowed him to tap deeply into his power making it easy to destroy them all...
I bet he thought they weren't even putting up a fight.
This was the most evil out of all the pre-Vader moves, and the whole sequence leading up to the slaughter scene was extremely well conceived by Lucas.
(Strilo might have a Fred Sanford moment)

One of the major reasons he fell was because she died, so her reaction to him falling is kinda moot. BUT - for discussions sake, I think obviously she would have tried to either bring him back, or - or nothing, she would have tried to bring him back.
