Strilo edit: Does this get your attention? Good. Discuss the films, not the fans who post here. If your comment is directed at a user or a group of users, just don't post it. I meant the word "sith" was never said in the OT so the only way you would even know what a sith was was if you were into the EU. If you did not hear any of the sith stuff from the EU and just followed the movies then you would just think of vader and the emperor as "evil/dark force users".

Also Lucas himself said that he doesn't really think of the portrayal of the jedi in the OT to be up to the level of what a REAL jedi from the old republic can do -at least what we see on screen anyways. The beliefs and teachings are all there but in terms of what kinds of impressive things we see the most impressive would be when yoda lifted the X-wing out of the swamp. Lucas himself has stated that the fighting stile and little things we see luke do are just pieced together from the story's Yoda and Obi-wan told him about the great knights of the old republic (the PT era knights).

When we see young, organized, powerful jedi and sith doing there thing in the era that was there "heyday" in TPM we are seeing it for the very first time and even little, simple things like the "force push" or sword fighting that actually makes sense are realized for the first time as a big deal.

Thats what i meant. peace

Guys we really need a reminder here. There will be NO calling other users names of a flaming nature. We also clearly need a reminder about the fans/films rule.

Discuss the films, not the fans who post here. If your comment is directed at a user or a group of users, just don't post it. It could lead to waters that are better left unsailed. Treat your fellow fans with respect, even if you disagree vehemently with them.

As long as we refrain from being insulting or making direct reference to specific users here, I don't see how this particular thread topic can be adequately addressed WITHOUT discussing fans.

I mean, would it violate the film/fans rule for me to say I think the people who waited in line for weeks to see TPM were being extremely ridiculous?

This rule is really not up for debate. It's worked for a long time. It's more about respect and being sensitive to the people with differing views on the films than you have. The types of posts I've been reading and editing in here were not at all respectful of fellow fans. To directly answer your question, I think it is better to say "I think it was ridiculous for people to wait in line for weeks to see these films." The action is ridiculous. What I would not say is "I think people who waited in line for weeks to see these films were ridiculous." The person is ridiculous there.

What a great thread.

I think it was hit on earlier that TPM was more about the experiences that came with waiting for May 19, 1999.

Here is my story. I will try to keep it brief.

I was a senior in High School when TPM came out. So that puts me in an age group when I was really too young to experience most of the OT in the theater. I have often thought that I never remember watching Star Wars for the first time, i do not ever remember not knowing who Vader was or how ROTJ would end. It seems as if I was born knowing everything about and knowing that I loved getting sucked into the story. So I was very excited to go into a Star War movies and not know what was going to happen. Given that I took my spoiler free vow which I can happily say I kept all the way through Episode III

Like I said earlier TPM was about the build up. Here are some of my fondest memories...

Learning that the trailer was posted online and literally downloading it over a modem all night and then waking up to watch it in the morning. I must have watching that trailer 3 times a day. To this day I think that is one of the most well put together trailer of all time. It hit on everything it needed to. The music, the scenes they showed...everything was perfect. I still argue that TPM changed the way movies were marketed with online avenues and how the trailer has become such an important part of the movie.

I remember seeing the Anakin poster with the Vader silhouette being blown away by how simple yet awesome it was.

I remember watching all the TV specials, even Rosie O'Donnel as it got close.

60 Minutes special when you heard the first few bars of DotF. I would rewind and play that over and over again just to get a taste of what the score would be.

May 3. Going to the stores to just take in how Star Wars took over everything.

I remember being mad that I could not go to the midnight show since I had an AP Biology exam at 8am.

I remember going to the movies early to get in line for a good seat. I will never forget how excited I was when the lights dimmed. The Titan AE trailer...then the words we had all waited years to see.

It was more than a movie. It was a series of events that ended in seeing the movie.

It was a great time. One that I will never forget and most likely will never get to experience again.

Happy Birthday, Episode I...a film that a new generation will have more respect for because it deserves it. A great, little children's fantasy that shares the Star Wars name.
