So i celebrated this by cuddling up with my lady friend and a large pizza and watched this right at midnight. Pretty cool, but nothing beats what occured 10 years ago from that time slot.

I cannot believe it's been 10 years. So much has happened from '99 to now.

In 1999 I was 14 years old. My first viewings of the OT were of the early VHS releases by CBS FOX home video, and I had seen the Special Editions in theaters (so the "see it again for the first time" campaign really spoke to me). My fandom actually grew BECAUSE of the SE changes, I was amazed by digital technology and animation. I probably watched the behind the scenes segments on the SE VHS tapes more than I did the actual films.

With the upcoming release of TPM I attempted to collect as many KFC/Taco Bell toys as I could and even caught Toys r Us the morning after midnight madness, buying two of each figure (though I only found one Darth Maul, the packaged figures are still in the basement at my parents house). I remember having a few of the Pepsi cans, but really wanted to complete collection. I also vividly remember eating a Jar Jar Tongue pop, though I'm not sure if it was nostalgia or trauma.

My dad bought advance tickets for a midnight show at a General Cinemas theater in Minneapolis. The midnight showing RULED, the event almost beat out the film itself in memories. I loved the film at the time, and still do. Something I'll never forget was during the dinner table scene, probably the quietest part of the film, a guy spilled a whole box of Gobstoppers. You could hear each one hitting floor, and the spill lasted 20 seconds. After the spill somebody else yelled "Uh-oh!" and the entire theater burst out laughing. Good times. happy

Happy 10th TPM, I wear my Episode 1 boxer shorts in honor of today.

In the months leading up to Episode I's release, what were your feelings?

Immense excitement. 17 years of waiting were about to come to an end. The teaser and theatrical trailers had only built up the excitement, and of course I visited TheForce.net almost daily for any news and tidbits that were out there.

How old were you at the time?

31

What hopes did you have for the new Star Wars adventure?

I just wanted George to take me back to that galaxy far, far away... and he did!

And when it hit - how did you react?

I loved it. For a little over two hours I was that nine year old boy sitting in a dark theater watching Star Wars for the first time in 77. I thoroughly enjoyed TPM from beginning to end. Most of the large group of friends I went with loved the film as well, but of course two of my friends who were "too cool for the room" hated it...

It was also the Star Wars film that turned my youngest (she was 5 at the time) into a full fledged Star Wars fanatic. And on Fridays we get to relive that Summer of 99 every week when we watch new episodes of Clone Wars together.

Looking back now - how do you feel about The Phantom Menace?

I still love the film and for me it has aged well.

Well, today is (was) the day! I said it in my first post, but today was the day Star Wars peaked. It really hit its highest point here and I don't see how any fan could be disappointed at what it was able to accomplish, regardless of what happened when it was all over. That's what makes this day special, more than just the fact it was the first Star Wars film in 16 years.

The nostalgia caught up with me! I'm listening to the Episode 1 commentary while the movie plays in a postage stamp sized box on my screen (I'm at work, so don't tell anyone). I also repurchased "Episode 1 Racer" for the Dreamcast which I traded off for another game back in 2001.

I also can't believe it's been ten years today. As I said in a previous thread, it's great to hear that TPM has a lot more fans than I previously thought - I also feel that the film has aged well, and in fact may look even better than it did when originally released.

For example, when I first saw TPM, I remember thinking that the Battle Droids looked kind of foolish/dorky and wondered why they didn't look more menacing - also, having the Battle Droids be controlled by the one large spaceship (which, when destroyed, rendered the BD's ineffective) seemed a very cheap and sloppy way to operate these robots.

However, as the years have gone by, I've realized that this was intentional, and illustrated that the Trade Federation was cheap (at least initially), and didn't want to spend a lot of money on their droids.
In addition, after seeing Episodes II & III, it's obvious that between TPM and AOTC, the TF decided to step-up and improve their production so that we later saw the "Super Battle Droids" that were present in Episodes II and III - this was a very logical and cool progression, and so then the physical appearance of the Battle Droids in TPM made more sense and had more meaning - at least, IMHO.

I think I will watch a double feature of Starwoids (to celebrate the build up of TPM), and then Phantom Menace to mark the 10 year anniversary.

Just because there is a lot of criticism of the film does not mean those same critics are not fans. If anything, the fact they are critics are what makes them fans.

I can be very critical of TPM, yet I am a huge fan of it, albeit for other reasons.

So today's the day of the 10th anniversary of The Phantom Menace. I will celebrate by giving the film a rewatch as soon as possible.

In the months leading up to Episode I's release, what were your feelings?

I didn't always think of the upcoming new Star Wars film obsessively, but I speculated about it and wondered how it would be like.

What hopes did you have for the new Star Wars adventure?

I just hoped that it would be a good and entertaining Star Wars film which I would like.

And when it hit - how did you react?

I really liked it, considering this was the first SW movie I saw in a theater; the podracing sequence was a standout part and Jar Jar didn't and still doesn't annoy me. Also, all the action sequences were great and I was quite impressed.

Looking back now - how do you feel about The Phantom Menace?

TMP was a really good and entertaining movie and I still think it is. It's of course not better than the original films but it's still a nice one.
