Its funny because speaking of spoilers i remember there was this #$%&@*$ kid at my school who was lucky enough to see the movie on opening day (one day before me!) and you would not believe how he just ran through the school bragging all day about how he seen the movie and how he knew Gui-gon jinn dies at the end! He literally walked around telling people that Qui-gon gets stabbed in the heart. I was wearing a t-shirt with Gui-gon and obi-wan on it and he walks up to me and ill just never forget those words-

Him: "oh! he gets stabbed in the heart, and then he--" skull

Me:" UUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!1111 OMGOOOOOD KID DONT TELL MEEEE!!!!" shock angry cry

I remember how no matter how hard i tried to forget it i still couldn't stop thinking about it. Actually i think it made the Duel of the fates even more intense for me (lol) because ALL THROUGH THE DUEL i was worried about Gui-gon dieing and then i was thinking maybe the kid had just lied to me. So then by the time it was just Qui-gon fighting maul i was literally DIEING for the gate to open so Obi-wan could back him up and save him but then *of corse* he got stabbed in the heart. On the inside i felt as upset as Obi-wan did.

So yea....tl;dr - I hate that kid. frustrated

PS: I would like to note that the only reason i didn't see it on opening day was because both theaters in my town were sold out, but the very next day i saw it, it was the 8 or 9 o'clock showing.

I got spoiled on Qui-Gon's death too - by the damn back cover of the soundtrack.

Defending Lucas's artistry is fine, but this is one place in which there's no arguing that a massive failure took place.

In the years leading up to the movie, all we ever heard was how much secrecy Lucas was going through - only giving actors the specific script pages in which they had lines then making them give the scripts back to be destroyed, making everyone sign strict nondisclosure agreements. All supposedly in the interest of keeping things secret until the movie came out.

Then a month beforehand we got "Track 9: Anakin wins the Pod Race" and "Track 15: Qui-Gon's Noble End"/"Track 16: Qui-Gon's Funeral". Seriously? They couldn't have at least made the track names SLIGHTLY vague?

In addition, the first wave of toys included both "Padme Naberrie" and a makeup-less "Queen Amidala". The only conceivable reason for releasing two figures of the same character in a wave that gave every other character only one is to support the suprise reveal that Padme and Amidala are the same person, so why in the world would they release a figure of Amidala AFTER the reveal? Without the makeup, there's no question that it's the same person!

All that paranoid secrecy during the film's production seemed even more ridiculous when the merchandise spoiled everything weeks before the film hit theaters.

A few days before the movie came out my friend opened the graphic novel and we both clearly saw Darth Maul cut in half. Such a huge spoiler... Ah, but we had a great time hyping up for that movie, seeing it in the theater 4 times, and then watching the horrible bootleg we found over and over until the VHS came out.

ROFL oh man I so remember that. How terrible was that? It was like fate decided we had to know how he died before hand. Great times those were though.

I grabbed it and opened to what seemed the middle. A spoiler from midway through wouldn't have been bad. I wasn't expecting Darth Maul and Qui-Gon dying being the pages I opened up to.

Well, if you peek inside the comic or novel adaptations, you've only yourself to blame if you're spoiled.

Spoilers on the outside packaging of CDs and toys, on the other hand...

We should have known by the Darth Maul cups from Taco Bell, where the lid comes off at his waist.

I posted an article called The Top 10 Memories of Anticipating The Phantom Menace at PopcornMonster.com It was featured on TheForce.Net here last weekend. I loved this time in Star Wars history, because the anticipation was so huge and it was at a time before prequel haters came along.

I also posted an article called The Top 10 Best Things About The Phantom Menace I just felt like listing the things I did like, because we've heard tirelessly over the last decade what people didn't like.

Great articles - Thanks very much for posting these. I like them both, but the "Top 10 Memories" is especially interesting, because it really brings me back to the 6 months prior to the film's release, when speculation was rampant & people were lining up. This all led up to all of the merchandise being released in early May (Hasbro figures, novel, etc.), which then led up to the release of the film.

That all being said, I am a huge movie fan & like all types of films (Hollywood blockbusters, sci-fi films, foreign films, independent films, etc.), but I am sure that there will never be another film that I am looking forward to seeing as much as I was looking forward to seeing TPM in May 1999.

I enjoyed those lists too, very accurate for my experience anyways.

One thing about TPM is its a very "worm" movie as specially the tatooine scenes. Witch i think is important considering how dark the other two movies are also considering how the movie doesn't even really have a happy ending at all because palpatine got everything he wanted.
