I'm glad to see someone trying to think about these movies. That said, I would re-assess the stance that SW is not "meta-filmic." shhh

No, I really mean that. Drawing on obvious references like Kurosawa and 30s serials and western iconography doesn't necessarily make the films meta-filmic. That would usually imply some kind of attention being drawn to the film as construct, and Star Wars movies are too direct for that, in the old-fashioned Hollywood kind of way. So I would say Lucas is a long way from Tarantino, even if you sure have a point about the influences on display. peace

It must be the quality of the master copy then because I had no clue there was digital cameras used in TPM. blush Does anyone else notice the film grain in TPM that wasn't there in AOTC or ROTS?

I think I know what you mean, but I'm not sure it's got to do with film or digital. I sure like the way Tatooine looks in TPM, but some of those scenes were filmed with digital test cameras. Probably interior scenes as I don't think they were shooting digital in the desert back in 1997. On the other hand I love the grittiness of Mustafar in ROTS which is shot on digital for sure. peace

I think you are overstating the above, especially Newt in aliens. There is nothing especially great about the above performances, and nothing that elevates them above Jake Lloyd either. It's the dialogue that makes the roles so memorable, not the performances.

^they're all way better than Lloyd .

and it doesn't matter how good the dialog is if the performances are bad .

when it comes to children the director is more responsible for the performance , so I don't really blame Lloyd , I blame Lucas .

One thing I noticed when watching TPM the other day was the warmth given by the use of film. AOTC and ROTS were shot in digital and while I adore the films the camera work comes off mainly as cold and heartless. TPM has small ammounts of film grain that gives the picture a warmer, dream like feel which is much more in line with the OT.

Then I'm sure you can point out the scenes in TPM that actually ARE shot on digital...? wink

I believe it's just the one scene - where QG and anakin are chatting on Shmi's balcony about stars etc.

Alot of that warmth that Episode I has has to do with where most of the film's locations take place. A thirty minute chunk takes place on Tatoonie. The climax takes place on Naboo.

But shooting it on film does give it a different feel that Episodes II and III. That feel will more than likely be gone when it hits Blu Ray. I forsee Lucas stripping most of the grain out so it will line up with Episodes II and III.

ah TPM, it brings so many good memories for me. I was so excited to see this movie. It was so good. The light saber fighting was amazing. I loved the costumes the Jedi wore and we got to see Coruscant. Darth Maul I think was the best Sith Lord we could see on screen.

Maul was sure to be a legend by the way Lucas "under-used" him. I love that too!

I also loved that. When people complain about what a small part maul had its like complaining about what a small part baba fett had in TESB because when you think about it the whole reason WHY they are both such fan favorites is BECAUSE of what small parts they had. Lucas knew just what he was doing when he crafted what mauls part would be in that movie. Brilliant applause .

I wish I could go back to seeing it again, 10 years ago as a 10 year old. This must be how the fans who grew up with the OT feel. Magic!

I remember just hearing about a new star wars movie coming out...but what REALLY got me excited was the first time I saw the trailer in the theater! And the Imperial March started playing, and I got SOOOO excited!

Granted, that was back when I was finishing my Senior year in high school-so needless to say with everything going on what with friends and graduation and all, I didn't really pay much attention to it. The movie was out in theaters for about a week before I finally decided to see it-mainly because my friends came to me all excited and said "OMG you HAVE to see it-it's AWESOME!" So I went.

At that time, I had thought Star Wars was a cool movie series...but it wasn't even in my top 10...Episode I TPM was really the point where I started to grow as a serious SW fan! I guess I was right at the perfect age where I was just getting all into seeing movies, RIGHT at the time the prequels started coming out. So it was mostly a timing thing for me...

But I'll never forget the feeling of seeing that trailer for TPM in the theater for that first time!!!!!
