The was never a time before, nor will there be again, when I was as excited for any film as I was for this one.

Maybe Return of the Jedi. But still, I was 9 then. I was 26 when TPM came out. laugh

I never thought I could get so jazzed to see a film like that but I did.

The film has grown on me a lot since then.

That review from dvdactive has many points I agree with. That's pretty much how my review of it would be.

Man...has it really been ten years? I was seventeen when TPM came out and I remember while waiting in line to buy me and my then girlfrind's tickets some guy bursting out the theater side exit door and yelling "Star Wars" as loud as he could and running into the night. It was a pretty funny scene and I remember it got all of us waiting pump to see it. happy

I'd like to thank my old friend for getting me into Star Wars. He introduced me to the OT and we regularly watched it at his house. Upon hearing the OT was being re-released in theatres we were quick to get out tickets and were the first two in line for each movie. We were swept away by the movies on the big screen and also were washed further out by the release of SotE.

Of course that led up to hearing that Episode I was being made. The local theatre sold tickets three weeks in advanced and fortunately our parents allowed us to skip class and pick up tickets. We were first in line to get our tickets which was an amazing feeling. And on the day of the release we were giving permission to go to the midnight showing. We were only 13 at the time and it was the best feeling to be out so late watching the movie we'd been anticipating for months! I wish time didn't pass by so fast but, that's what DVDs are now for. happy

I think TPM stands up pretty well after ten years. Probably the most hyped movie in history, it couldn't help but disappoint. There are things about it which I didn't like at the time and still don't, but I can watch it now, ten years later, and find it reasonably entertaining.

Thinking about it now a days I really do with I could go back in time just to relive the fun. I remember everyone JUST EVERYONE was into it. It was like all the kids at school finally agreed on something, everyday we would do nothing but talk about the movie and all the parents acted very differently when it came to the movie, we could all be going on and on about something else but when it came to star wars it was like everyone's parents enjoyed it as much as we did.

When it finally came out there was just no other movie like it. It was just the biggest adventure i had ever seen, the first few times you saw it it felt like the movie was 3 and a half hours long. When we walked out of the theater it felt like you wanted to run and tell everyone about it but you didn't even know where to start. All summer long going to see it was the thing to do.

My mother got me the VHS for my birthday and i cherished it and then when the dvd came out it was the reason why we bought a dvd player, we didn't actually buy any dvds for it for a whole week or so because TPM dvd was just all we needed or cared about at the time. I remember my friend use to joke and call the dvd player a "phantom menace adapter for our tv" lol. laugh

I still think the poster of anakin walking with Vader's shadow is one of the coolest and well thought movie posters ever. When I first saw that I was speechless.

Wow, its hard to believe it's been 10 years of disappointment with the PT. Time goes by so fast.

I remember back when the movie cane out it was like my 3rd time seeing it in the theater and some guy was yelling with his friend about how "lucas raped his childhood" rolling_eyes all he was doing was embarrassing himself because almost everyone that was there had already seen the movie and was coming back for more with there kids/family. It wasn't until you got on the internet that you were reminded of all the hate and its funny cuz in some ways thats still true laugh

I didn't like the Blues Brothers 2000, but I only spent like an hour and a half being disappointed with it.

Then I moved on to things I did like.

I agree. It hung on my room wall for as long as it was out until well after the movie was released.

Great poster. I still have it rolled up and in my collector closet.(Yes, I have one of those) blush

One day I will have a Star Wars room and I will hang it happily next to my ESB concept and ESB 10 year anniversary ones.

I also still have the Struzan one and the Jedi vs Sith one with Kenobi in blue, Qui-Gon green ad Maul in red.

cool

I was 10 at the time. This movie holds a lot of value to me. It was the first time and only time i got to attend a midnight showing of a Star Wars film and the atmosphere was amazing. I remember getting the last seat in the place and the isles filled with people and even all the employees stood in the back to watch.

Going into it i was overwhelmed with excitement. It wasn't the first time I got to see my fav movie franchise on the big screen thanks to the 1997 releases but it wast he first time i got to see a new movie, one I have been waiting for many years to see. As a kid I was able to overlook any flaws and just enjoy it for what it was. It's easily one of my fav films ever if for nothing but the nostaglia of it all.

I have to admit, I well & truly enjoyed all the leadup to TPM, &, to a certain extent, the fallout. Good times. Although I wasn't using the internet widely, I was working at a media monitoring company beforehand, & was able to get all the main news stories as they happened - Entertainment Tonight provided a few SW tidbits every couple of days.

By sheer accident, I ended up with tickets to two separate screenings on opening day. I was somewhat disappointed & confused on the first screening that day, but seeing it a second time kind of cleared things up. It wasn't a masterpiece, but it wasn't as bad as so many earlier had said. I must have heard the term "That was ****ed" about 7 times just walking out of the theatre the first time.

Saw it another 4 times at the cinema over the next 6 months. Didn't really improve, but a couple of those times were enjoyable enough - I had nothing else to do, & how often do you get to see a Star Wars film in its initial release at the cinema?

But what I really enjoyed about that time was that Star Wars was EVERYWHERE. On TV commercials, in shopping malls, on bus shelters, on chip packets - everywhere. Regardless of the film, the Force was with us all.

Over the last decade, I've developed a bit of a soft spot for TPM as a result. It's nowhere near as bad as everyone thinks it was, despite certain obnoxious reptilian & bacterial elements, & it does actually hold together as a solid adventure movie, much better than AOTC. Darth Maul >>> Darth Tyranus, & Qui-Gon Jinn >>> PT Obi-Wan Kenobi. Jar Jar Binks still must die, however.

1999 was fun. First Star Wars film in 16 years, & whatever failings it had couldn't dampen my spirits. Ten years on (& thirty years on), I'm still a Star Wars fan.
