I posted an article called The Top 10 Memories of Anticipating The Phantom Menace at PopcornMonster.com It was featured on TheForce.Net here last weekend. I loved this time in Star Wars history, because the anticipation was so huge and it was at a time before prequel haters came along.

I also posted an article called The Top 10 Best Things About The Phantom Menace I just felt like listing the things I did like, because we've heard tirelessly over the last decade what people didn't like.

Great! Thanks for posting those. You made me want to watch the film again. happy

The summer keeps going. At this time in 99, the US had run the film for weeks and weeks, while most other territories (like us in Norway) were still waiting. It was a ridiculously delayed international schedule. Fortunately for all of us, it would never happen again. But this was a strange time for me, knowing that millions of people had seen the new Star Wars and that I would not see it until mid-August. Star Wars was everywhere, on every news show and every entertainment show, and the bloody novelization was sitting on my shelf. But no movie... sad

I enjoyed those lists too, very accurate for my experience anyways.

One thing about TPM is its a very "worm" movie as specially the tatooine scenes. Witch i think is important considering how dark the other two movies are also considering how the movie doesn't even really have a happy ending at all because palpatine got everything he wanted.

What do you mean by "worm"? As in "Warm" or something else?

Well I was 22 it was the higlight of mty summer comsidering I lost both my remaning grandparents. My expectations were somewhat high especially after seeing Maul and the double bladed saber. Jar Jar did annoy me but as time has past I have grown to like him, when I was younger my best movie memories with my family are seeing all 6 with my family. Now 10 years later I have a niece and nephew who I want to follow in my footsteps of nerdness and to have a charecter like Jar Jar will make that alot easier to accomplish. . I cant pick a favorite because I like them all for diffrent reasons. Another way to look at it aside from Vader Palpy and Maul kids wont get nightmares or learn violence or swear words unlike alot of movies today

Does anyone remember the website which began in 1997, and was created by a Priest who made fan art depicting rumored Episode I scenes???

At the time I was just a kid, so I really didn't mind the plot or characterization, or all those other unimportant elements....I just knew that there was tons of awesome ation and explosions, so I was happy! I just got episode 1 on dvd, and I've got to admit: I don't think it is as bad as everyone seems to think. I mean, it's not the high point of the series, but it is still a good watch. Besides, it finally explains the force, so it is worth it for the explanation...

I vaguely remember that site- mostly the way they interpreted the battle droids. I would love to check it out now and see what was spot-on and what wasn't.

I have fond memories of the summer of 99, I remember watching the trailer 30 straight times on my computer. I was introduced to characters I didn't know about. To me it was like falling in love all over again with Star Wars, a new set of characters to cheer for, also to find out more about OT characters and how they came about. I didn't have enough money for a car in 99 so I either depended on a ride from my parents or my bike to watch Episode 1 in theatres, unfortunatley I only saw it 3 times, once I got a car and I had a job I was able to watch AOTC & ROTS many more times in theatres!

And. Today. It has been exactly 10 years since the release of Episode I in Norway! A very long 3 months after the US release, it was thankfully one of the very last big event movies not to have a simultaneous international release.

Me and my girlfriend drove to Oslo to see it on the world's biggest THX screen, The Colosseum. That's right, it's the world's largest THX theater, but that doesn't mean it's the best. In fact, they have a lot of trouble every time they need to get the gigantic theater approved by the THX people. Nevertheless, it was a long drive, a quick dinner, and into the midnight screening feeling somewhat like this: hypnotized

In the months leading up to Episode I's release, what were your feelings? How old were you at the time? What hopes did you have for the new Star Wars adventure?

I was 25 at the time. To say I was excited would be an understatement. As somebody who grew up with the OT, a new series of films was almost to much excitement to bare. I joined these very forums (I don't even remember my logon - this is a new account) and read all the gossip obsessively. The first time I saw the teaser trailer was on C4's The Big BreakfasT(UK) and I taped it and watched it over and over. The teaser didn't blow me away, and Jar-Jar was an instant worry, but the sound effects and music got my blood pumping. Of course, I dreamed it would match the OT but also knew that would be very hard to achieve. I remember I had settled for the new films being as good as ROTJ, which was my least favorite of the OT, but still a film I loved. I felt that was a realistic goal, for me.
I stood in line for hours to get tickets when they first went on sale and went to see it on the day of release. I saw it again 2 days later.

And when it hit - how did you react?

My reaction then was feeling very neutral. I wanted to love it so badly, and some aspects like the music and foreshadowing made me tingle. I also thought the casting was spot-on. But that was canceled-out by the negative aspects - the fact it looked more like a cartoon and the impression that the dialogue was dull with none of the snappy back-and-forth of the OT. I was just very "meh..." about it all. However, I also knew that my expectations were so high that it was always going to be an anti-climax, and that it would probably be years before I could look at it objectively.

Looking back now - how do you feel about The Phantom Menace?

I would rate TPM as the weakest SW movie. But I don't hate it. It has WAY more impact now we can see little Anakin alongside Hayden and Vader. I think my main gripe is the Gungans - I just don't care about them at all. Jar-Jar didn't bother me half as much as Boss Nass, who I found very annoying. The Gungan v droid battle was also too much CGI nonsense, and the space battle was half-hearted and flat. I love the plot of the PT, but I feel GL could have done more with the Jedi Council and Sith Lords, and less with silly Gungan antics. Overall I'm still pretty much on the fence with TPM. All I can say is that I can watch the other 5 movies over and over, but TPM is a bit of a chore to watch. I would place it thus:

ESB - 9.5/10
ROTS - 9/10
ANH - 9/10
ROTJ - 8.5/10
AOTC - 8/10
TPM - 7/10

Does anyone else remember that very expensive special collectors edition (whatever) of TPM on VHS? I remember back then it was considered the best version on the movie just because of the fact that it was not out on dvd yet and they color was enhanced for that release slightly. Ahh the good'ol days. ^_^

There was another collectible that came with that set. What was it???

That's the version I watched on May 19th! applause

That set brings back fond memories, actually the whole TPM period brings back fond memories!

I didn't have access to the internet so I didn't experience any negativity towards TPM (or AOTC) until I got a computer in 2004, besides the occasionally person who didn't like any of the Star Wars films. And of course Darth media, which is still going out of it's way trying to bring Lucas and the PT down. It's not working Darth media, the PT is here to stay! grin dancing

I'm still totally immersing myself with EVERYTHING Phantom Menace. I just finished up the "Making of" book again, and now I'm reading the comic adaptation. I've been celebrating the 10th, in my own way, since last Christmas when my wife got me the Hallmark 1999 Jedi Council ornament three pack, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Saesee Tiin and Yoda. I plan on celebrating the whole year through. I picked up the new Hallmark ornament to add to my Tree this year. I'm hoping to find Harbro's TPM wave of figures. As well as watching the film a few more times, at least, wink before the end of the year. I've got my Gentle Giant Battle Droid on pre-order, who knows when that will ship rolling_eyes if any of you have ever dealt with Gentle Giant you know what I'm talking about. grin

Happy 10th Phantom Menace! Like a fine wine you get better with age! applause

The other thing from the video the set, besides the film cell, was a abridged version of "The Art of" book".
