Greetings all,

Long time lurker, first post. The prequels get a lot of hate in the media, the fanbase & general public opinion. Much of it is prolly well deserved, but the only truly terrible prequel in my opinion is AOTC. And I only say that because I feel the film was TERRIBLY edited. I really do feel that there's a good film in there somewhere, the sad thing is, so much got left on the cutting room floor that the film as it stands is a flaming pile of %^$#. The biggest issues I have with film is the 20 second lightsaber duel we ended up with between Anakin & Dooku & Yoda & Dooku, and the battle of geonosis itself. I noticed this clip on youtube recently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_HrAaiq6fg, which was taken from starwars.com's hyperspace subscription that basically compiles many deleted scenes from the Battle of Geonosis. I also remember a clip that surfaced in 2002 basically showing deleted footage of the lightsaber duel: Anakin doing a bunch of twirling moves with his lightsaber, Dooku fighting Yoda -- (does anyone know if this clip is still online?)

Anyway, has anyone ever tried to edit these scenes back into the film with some sort of rudimentary effects themselves? I wonder what the film could have actually looked like with these scenes & the deleted scenes we got on the DVD -- I'm thinking at the very least it would have it far and away better than Episode I. (I am not advocating piracy btw.)

P.S. One other thing I gotta get off my chest. For all those awesome people that keep saying that Palpatine 'threw' the fight against Windu(haven't been on this board in a while, but that was a recurring theme for like half of 2005) -- give it up. Windu won it fair & square -- LUCAS SAYS IT HIMSELF ON THE EPISODE III DVD commentary.

This may have just been a rumor, but weren't there also a lot more extensive scenes with Owen on Tatooine? I remember reading that the actor was upset because most of his part wound up on the cutting room floor.

My biggest editing problem with AotC is that almost all the music once the Clones show up on Geonosis is a mishmash of tracks from Episode I. No new arrangements, just tracked in verbatim. The first time I saw AotC it was a week-early preview and part of me was hoping (though I knew better) that maybe we'd just accidentally gotten a print with some of the temp track left in by mistake.

John Williams did write a new score for the Geonosis battle, but Lucas felt that it didn't fit the scene, so he slapped on some re-used tracks from TPM instead.

I think AOTC needs a few more minutes trimmed off it, not added back in! The IMAX version makes a few judicious cuts here and there, and delivers a better paced and more exciting film. IMO the only deleted scenes that need to be restored are the arrival at the Naberrie home, the dinner with the Naberries, and the dialogue between Padme and her sister (mother?) where the Senator silently reveals her true feelings for Anakin.

The lightsaber duel between Dooku and Anakin is beautifully and stylishly edited. Some fans find it too short and thus unsatisfying, but this is a matter of pacing from episode to episode: There are so many duels in ROTS that a quick but intense one is all that's needed in AOTC. IMHO, of course.

I disagree that the prequels are bad. I like the prequels a little more than the originals, but still love the originals! The PT does not deserve all the hate it gets, and more SW fans should respect the PT, since it leads up to all of the OT. And AOTC isn't bad at all. It basically explains all the secrets of the OT.

What I wouldn't give to have the IMAX version of AOTC on DVD. Much tighter film, and I completely agree with you about the deleted scenes.

I just completed my own AOTC & TPM with all available deleted scenes reinserted back in the film. I know many people think that these prequil movies are too long but I love Star Wars so much I want to live in the universe as long as possible each viewing! The AOTC I made turned out great! I even included the Jedi landing platform scene.

It was kinda hard to decide what to do there because a little of the material is covered in the Yoda, Mace & Obi scene in the temple but this is what I did. I cut the ending Mace line in the temple scene so right after Yoda says EVEN THE OLDER, MORE EXPERIENCED ONES and it goes back to Obi & Mace I put an upward wipe before Mace says REMEMBER, ANIKIN IS THE ONE WHO WILL RESTORE BALANCE.

Then in the landing platform scene, I cut the small line Obiwan says that is said in the Temple scene of HIS SKILLS HAVE MADE HIM ARROGANT so nothing is being repeated and both scenes stand on their own. This was almost like it was meant to be because the different camera angles allowed me to do it seemlessly. Turned out great! Im uploading some snippets of the deleted scenes reinserted on youtube very soon. I have one uploaded for TPM already. Heres a link:

AOTC could probably do with a re-edit. I don't think Ben Burtts editing on this film was satisfactory and somehow it seems Lucas took his eye off the ball with it, which is very surprising given that the editing process is his favourite. Many of the scenes in themselves are OK, I wouldn't take many complete scenes out, I just think that a lot of them could do with a little shaving. The musical edits are poor as well and really need to be redone.

The scenes with Anakin and Padme at her parents should be put back and the Naboo arrival scene and the meeting with the Queen taken out. All of that exposition about Padmes political carrer post TPM and whats happening with the Trade Federation and the Sepratists is less important than developing Anakin and Padmes relationship. The jump from where Padme is with Anakin on the refugee ship, to her allowing him to kiss her on the verandah is too much and it needs to scenes at Padmes Homestead to make it smoother.

TPM is fine and doesn't need anything taking out or putting back. The problems this film has are not to do with editorial issues.

ROTS for the most part is fine as well, but I'd put back the first scene with Padme and Bail Organa discussing their concerns about Palpatine with Mon Mothma and the other Delegation 2000 members.

The probe droid scene needs to be put back in TPM.

I'd like to see Artoo falling off the landing platform, even though it would spoil the AOTC reveal.

Agreed. It explains why Qui-Gon is running so fast Anakin can't keep up.

I think it was cut for quality and rhythmic purposes. Plus, Qui Gon is a kickass jedi, he knows the deal.

The interesting thing about the Clones deleted scenes is they'd probably get the job done better than scenes that stayed in. In other words, is a movie romance more relatable when showing a guy meet a girl's parents and see her room, or when telling her she's not sand and riding an animated creature in a meadow? The IMAX cut with the romantic scenes "swapped" would be cool. (I like that hayden isn't leering at her in those scenes. And the dvd doesn't even have Anakin's original nightmare on the freighter, or Padme talking to C3P0 about her conflicted feelings about Anakin, which are way more effective in selling the idea that she actually likes this guy. )

I agree. Seeing Padme inside her home, essentially her life, is crucial. The scenes were well done, as well. I don't remember the nightmare on the freighter, but I do remember that the "too be angry is to be human" was not in the theatrical release.
