A very interesting analysis to be sure, but I contend that there must have been a way to show Jar Jars innocence without being as over the top as Lucas chose to be, or practically taking me out of the moive with stunts in battle scenes that seemed so ubelievable that I could barely watch them. I think his character is a good one, I just dont think he was very well done. I did however like the way characters were forced to react to him, espeically Qui Gon. But again, you have given this some thought and you bring up good points.

But doesent it count for something as well that soooo many people wished he was not there, I feel that Lucas made many valuable and insightful points in the OT without having a character that people hated.

I've also no doubt that he knew it would ultimately antagonise a lot of people, but he didn't want to be stopped from doing it.

I disagree. I dont think he had a clue it would ultimately antagonise a lot of people. While making the films, Lucas is working with a lot of Yes men and animators who would think that a CGI Jar Jar is the greatest thing since sliced bread. He put Jar Jar in mainly for the CGI testing and to appeal to little kids.

I think he was well aware that Binks would bother older moviegoers, but since he (against my better judgment wink ) chose to aim SW for a 9-11 year old kids he probably sincerely thought that they would find Binks funny.

Then you haven't heard the whole story. Rob Coleman tried to tone Jar Jar down in TPM, but Lucas refused(that was meant for voodoopuuduu).
Jar Jar Binks is the cutest gungan ever. Don't bash him, cuz I love him love

Okay I don't want this thread auto-locked so I am posting in it to keep that from happening.

Personally, I've never minded him at all. I don't think he added anything positive to the story, but I've never hated GL for putting him in. I don't think he ruined the story, just created a few moments that made me cringe (just like EVERY other Star Wars movie). I'm glad there was less and less of him as the PT went on, but I still love TPM.

*dusting off the thread*

I know I am not alone when I say that the PT could have used less of Jar Jar Binks or even could have used none of him. WITH THAT SAID, what changes to the character could have made him either more tolerable or better for the story?

I was thinking today that if Jar Jar had just been a KID gungan that it would have solved some of the cringing aspects for me. Kids are supposed to be dumb and make the kind of dumb comments Jar Jar makes. Further, it would make more sense why the Jedi would want to bring him along (he's only a kid and his people have disowned him!!)

What other ideas?
