Somethin' like that, yeah. Both were console games that recieved extremely solid PC ports, with very well re-designed interfaces. From what I can gather, Mass Effect's UI is being rebuilt from the ground up and is set to be a drastic improvement on the one thing everyone universally disliked about the XBox version.
For my money, I'm highly looking forward to both Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect. Both have been somewhat divisive games which people either love or hate in equal mesure, and often the things person x loves about them are the exact things person y hates, and vice versa. I plan to play both games as the quote-unquote "meditative experiences" Magnus describes, slowly and relaxingly immersing myself into their respective worlds. For AC especially I'm planning to hold to Penny Arcade's assessment that the main reason it got such bad-ish reviews was that reviewers were racing through it rather than taking their time and soaking the experience up. The general vibe around the net is that if you go into Assassin's Creed with the wrong mindset, you'll hate it, but if you go in with the right one the reverse is true.
As for Mass Effect, word is that in many ways it's not as good as Knights of the Old Republic, but that it's still very good if you like that sort of thing, which I rather do.
Both games are victims of their hype, in many ways, and in hindsight I'm a little bit glad that the PC versions have come out later, because I feel the time it's afforded me to pick up people's impressions of the console versions is going to let me go into both of them with the appropriate mindset to thoroughly enjoy them in just they way they should be.

I'm quite eager to hear Sammich's and BBN's impressions myself.
I've only just gotten into Damascus in Assassin's Creed, so not very far at all. But it is interesting to say the least. The storyline as a whole is compelling, but a fallout from having played and enjoyed BioShock (and oddly, the attidutde cultivated there was a result of playing System Shock 1 & 2, but I digress) is that you hve to wonder at the choices being made. Why doesn't Desmond simply overpower his captors? Frankly, unless the doctor's got some elite ninja training or the nurse has retained her electical powers from another show, it shouldn't be that hard!
The botched job at the beginning felt a little forced too. We are Assassins. Here is our Creed. Now watch as you're forced to merrily ignore it.
Aside from those two gripes (which will hopefully be answered), I get what PCPP meant by medative experience; you do have to take your time, which gives you the opportunity to take in the sights and immerse yourself in the quite beautiful world. Riding a horse through the Holy Lands during the First Crusade is an almost restful task too, especially as you have to amble on at a snail's pace to not attract unwanted attention. Which if you've played enough Thief is not a problem.
I'll get into this some more tomorrow.
Be seeing you,

Oh alright, I'll tell you then.
I got to Damascus too, and then stayed there till it was 1 am. Just moving through the city is amazing, leaping from roof to roof, climbing anything with even the tiniest handhold, it's brilliant. The freerunning mechanic truly is beautiful, and the world of the game, in the most physical and tactile sense of the term, just sucks you in. It really is a game that's all about the experience.
As Magnus said, Bioshock makes you wary of plot pieces that seem off, and that sense was certainly tingling through here. I certainly hope it's not just a case of bad writing. Certainly the real-world sequences all feel a bit laboured in an "Observe: I am the villain of the piece, and now listen quietly as I expound mysteriously on the plot. Also: dire hint, dire hint, dire hint." But it's no worse than most other games in the dramatic department, and as I said, I think it's likely to be going somewhere. Certainly Veronica Mars and her wacky boss aren't going through all this rigmarole for nothing.
I'm not really prepared to make a judgment on the game as a whole just yet, but I can certainly say I was having a darn good time with it. My bleary eyes this morning are testament to that.

Telltale has announced their new episodic series! And it is... (ready for this one?)
STRONG BAD'S COOL GAME FOR ATTRACTIVE PEOPLE!
Press release is up at Telltale's site, and a media glut is set to commence sometime later today.
Holy crap this is going to be awesome. It's primarily being designed as a WiiWare game (the Wii's new vaguely X-Box Live Arcade-like online store for small, downloadable, original games), but will also be getting a PC release. It's going to be structured into 5 episode "seasons" just like Sam and Max is, and I think it's a format that'll work perfectly. It's being written by Matt and Mike Chapman, and will have Homestar Runner's entire original voice cast (virtually the entire cast being comprised of Matt Chapman), and hence is totally all official-like.
I'm a crazy-huge Homestar Runner fan, and I can't wait for this. Besides, any game with a title like "Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People" has got my vote.

Hah! That's brilliant, albiet being another reason to throw all my money at Telltale yet again. *wipes mirthful tear from eye*
I think it would be appropriate to put on Strongbad Sings to accompany my work today.

7 minutes of gameplay footage from Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People. My lord, if they open every episode with Strong Bad singing, this will officially be the greatest achievement in the history of man. As long as the Telltale Store accepts Pizz Points, they can count me in.

Oh, awesome. The animation looks really nice, although I suppose it's probably easier to translate simple 2-d flashbased characters than hyperkinetic rabbity things, so is probably not surprising.
Well I can't wait.
