I don't know why I haven't given her a mention yet, but here: Hayley Westenra. She's got a beautiful voice.

I got excited because I noted she was apart of a soundtrack for a game the Penny Arcade boys mentioned - she's the kind of artist that I was surprised that other people knew of her. Young lass from New Zealand. Not the best "talking up" I could do, but I am sleepy.

I've just been reading a whole lot about Amazon's MP3 store, which dishes up DRM-free music from almost all of the major labels. I haven't bought any music in quite a long time, but this thing got me excited. It sounded great: good format, good prices, no intrusive copy protection: it's all good, baby.

It's not available outside of the United States.

This actually makes me incandescent with rage. It's not Amazon's fault, it's a licensing restriction imposed upon them by the record companies. But this is the kind of **** that drives a person to pirate their media. What are we down here, a 3rd world fraking country? These morons in suits up in LA are not giving me any opportunity to legally purchase music or video in the formats that I want and in ways that are easy for me. Just this morning I had a bunch of albums I was going to splurge and download, but no, not on the cards, it seems. Apparently they think we all write on stone tablets outside of god damn America, and just don't matter as a market. Oh well. Off to BitTorrent, then. See ya.

First off, I have a friend who would flip out at your using the word 'incandescent.' Long story.

As much as I am old fashioned and like having the shiny CD etc, that is rather frustrating. And it doesn't really make much sense. One would think a big corporation would jump at the chance to empty the pockets of international customers as well as their own, but still... Bleh.

I hear ya BBN. The Global Marketplace is really a myth, and for reasons which are just beyond stupid. Though any rant I have here would be similar to my DVD Region rant, so I'll spare it.

Sufficed to say, I went through this when I was looking for legal alternatives for acquiring Battlestar Galactica episodes last year. Being in Australia, I had no options, requiring me to hoist the colours and other piratey metaphors.

Hmmm, I wonder if any of this is covered under the Free Trade Agreement? Might be worth looking into. Waving that around with cries of "violation" might get interesting and amusing results.

Be seeing you,

Yep, ditto. It's just kind of sad on the studios' accounts. You'd think, what with Australia being the world's biggest user of BitTorrent per capita and all, they'd want to push into the market and give people better, legal alternatives. If I could get good quality or even high definition episode downloads of the shows I want to watch for a reasonable fee, I would jump on it.

Hey, check it out: Amazon says they're going international with their MP3 downloads this year.

Wow. Nice. This shouldn't be a bell-ringing moment, it should be just the done thing, but still, nice work, Amazon, now hurry it up.

Anywho, just wanted to post the site for Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen. They were pretty awesome. They sound better live, and they had a great stage presence. happy

Ladies and gentlemen, Brisbane band The John Steel Singers performing Evolution, arguably the catchiest tune in recent memory to use the lyrics "entomological trend".
