My guess right now is Anakin. However, I still see Anakin as a tragic hero and Vader as a villain, though ROTS is slowly changing my perception. I'll return to this thread after November 8th.

What's everybody's opinions now?

After watching ROTS (probably 100+ times thanks to the DVD) who is the hero of the entire saga now that it's complete.

To me, there isn't a hero of the ENTIRE saga. That would imply that the same person is THE hero of both the PT and OT. That's not the case.

I'd say Obi-Wan is the hero of the PT and Luke is the hero of the OT.

That's pretty much it. If you're looking at just the classic hero and not the tragic hero aspects of the story. Obi-wan for the PT and Luke for the OT. Anakin as the Chosen One saves the galaxy.

I voted in a poll in the trekBBS that came to the same conclusion. I'd argue that even if Anakin is the main characer of the PT, and Luke of the OT, Obi-Wan is the moral center of both series. And Anakin as the Tragic Hero? I see him, if anything, as the Anti-Hero or Antagonist of both trilogies. He does save the galaxy, but only as a byproduct of saving his child. If Luke's life hadn't hung in the balance, would Vader save the galaxy anyway? Probably not.

The Living Force Jedi himself, Qui-Gon. I think his influence spans the whole gammit.

Let's not start the whole confusion about the meaning of Tragic Hero again. See this thread for a definition.

To me Luke will always be the main hero. Anakin might be the main character, but Luke turns it all around. Consider that the Emperor would have died no matter what Anakin chose to do. The success of the rebels had nothing to do with the Skywalkers. Their part of the story is intercut but unrelated. I suppose it's possible that the Emperor may have had an escape shuttle standing by, but his overconfidence would have likely gotten him killed on the death star or in his attempt to escape. And although there is a lot of chaos and confusion as Luke is trying to leave; this all occured after the Emperor was killed. That break in command is likely the reason all the sheep scattered when the shepard perished.

I think Luke is the hero, in the most conventional sense of the word. He succeeds where his father failed, and even brings Anakin back in the process. Anakin is more of a villain or an anti-hero. I don't see someone who gives into temptation and becomes evil for over twenty years as the primary hero.

Anakin did some heroic deeds before his turn and he certainly saved Luke's life. However, I wouldn't put him in the same category as someone like Luke who was able to remain true to his Jedi ideals and not become a slave to the dark side. Even before his turn, a lot of people didn't think Anakin seemed like a classic hero the way Luke did. Anakin committed some outright heinous acts, and showed some dangerous qualities with his arrogance and desire to be all-powerful.

I think Luke is the hero, in the most conventional sense of the word. He succeeds where his father failed, and even brings Anakin back in the process.

applause

I think this sums it up.

ROTS was "supposed" to make us look at Anakin in a different light.....it didnt.

I still (even after the saga was completed) look at Luke Skywalker as the hero of the entire story.

Lucas would have had to convince me that Anakin was completely fooled and held "hostage" to the darkside before I could look at him as the hero.

ROTS clearly shows that Anakin had more than one opportunity to finish off Sidious but he didnt do it.

He could have killed him in the hallway, and he could have killed him when Mace defeated him....he didnt.

Anakin is Jerome Bettis dropping the ball, and then letting his defense get his offense the ball back, and then having another RB run the distance of the field and then taking over on his opponents 10. not_talking

EDIT:

(I had to throw in the "Bettis dropping the ball" analogy just for you Steelers fans. tongue )

IMO, the real hero of the entire saga IS R2D2. He is always in the right place at the right time and does the right thing.

Plus, everybody loves R2. wink
