it's that the hand Luke had it in
was cut off by Anakin. Doh!
But he shouldnt have went there in the first place, so hah, he should have listened to Yoda, Lando would have helped Leia and the others either way.

I think Luke's failure at the cave, failure on Bespin,
allowed Luke to drop his own lightsaber at the right moment
and self-actualize as a Jedi.

Good to see some people picking Mace Windu, especially after all the bashing the character has taken (and most of it unwarranted and overly ridiculous).
I, too, would choose Mace Windu because of his skill, and because he was the only Jedi with the insight and ability to sense that there was a plot to destroy the Jedi.
And he's the only one who was able to defeat Sidious in a battle, saber to saber. Even my other favorite Jedi Yoda couldn't beat Sidious (although their fight came to a draw).
As at least one other person said, Mace would make a great person to help the Rebellion. One of the saddest and shocking moments in all the movies is when Sidious blasts Mace with the lightning then Force blasts Mace out the window.
And then, you think, right there, if only Anakin wasn't there, or if only Anakin didn't cut off Mace's hand, there'd be no Empire, and there'd be no Emperor. He'd be nothing but dust.

Yeah, I thought it was a poor decision to have Mace
do the Anakin falling through Coruscant highway
grabbing onto an air car trick in the Clone Wars,
given the way he dies.
I would only have saved Mace long enough for suited
Vader to carve him up into little pieces.
Mace, sans one hand, survives, tracks Vader after he dons the suit,
and Mace get's steady schooled, son.

Perhaps Mace hadnt died? perhaps he landed on one of those many flying vehicles? and said "Forget them.. they didnt care to look for me" and went off on his own pimpin adventures with Jar-Jar and the Ghost of Padme.

Lando and his get rich quick schemes... Im sure in the time between Showdown at Centerpoint and Specter of the past he went and found Mace Windu.. still young through the force, and Jar jar and the ghost of padme, and learned all of the Bling Bling ways of Mace Windu, then came back to own some Thrawn impersonator.

Perhaps the trio went on to fight in great battles over Maces bling turf, and Jar-Jar became a pimp wielding a lightcane, and beat down the fools who didnt obey Maces law.

out of context, I would have liked to see Luke save Vader on the Second Death Star. It would have been cool to see Vader fighting for the light side, they give him a bright bleach suit, Kyp Durron and Exar Kun use the force to recreate Anakins lightsaber and pull it from the depths. Jacen and Jaina knowing their grandfather, Anakin not going paranoid about being just like his grandfather. Mace Windu and his Bling Gang suprised that Vader is still alive.

Maybe all the people that died in that tower destroyed by Anakin's landing of the Invisible Hand.
