"Annie" (UGggggh)
I hate that nickname too! I can't believe that it was written into AOTC. It makes Anakin seem like he's still a kid who hasn't grown up. Although...

Probably the earliest flyswatters were nothing more than some sort of striking surface attached to the end of a long stick. We tend to scoff at the beliefs of the ancients. But we can't scoff at them personally, to their faces, and this is what annoys me.

Irrespective of the fact that Jar Jar was crap, having a comic, slapstick character like that would never have worked in a film as dark as ROTS. Even 3PO's lines are cut to a bare minimum for the same reason.

I'm sorry all Jar Jr lovers, but i think that Jar JAr's one line " exscuse me " was more than enough! I personally would have liked to have seen him being killed by Anakin, it would have been so funny!

I didn't think George Lucas "wussed out." Well, in fact, he listened to people's opinions and statements. "We hate Jar Jar" and "He ruined Star Wars" etc. So George helped us in a way. He made Jar Jar shut up (or almost) in the movie. He actually saved us from getting ticked off.

whoa my topic got bumped.
Imagine how much more repect you would have had for GL if he could have made Jar Jar work in the film, making the PT feeling less polarized.

Lucas didn't wuss out, in the end he was the one who decided to trip Jar-Jar's lines.
At the same time he deleted the great bulk of Padme's scenes with the future leaders of the rebellion, something that I would say is more important to the overall saga than Jar-Jar tripping over something new.
Lucas felt Jar-Jar was a huge success with his target audience (children) and women. He has gone on record a number of times to dismiss the anti-Jar-Jar sentiment as coming from a group of people he knew wouldn't like it. He flat out says he isn't going out of his way to please these people.
The reason Jar-Jar's screentime was cut down was because the story centers in on Anakin.
I don't think the films seem polarized becase of this. Just as I didn't feel it polorized the classic trilogy to have Obi-Wan die in the first movie.

Jar Jar got a whole close-up shot focused on him (and Boss Nass) during one of the most powerful scenes in ROTS (and there are quite a few), namely the funeral.
I think this was a great move by GL, as I personally am a fan of Jar Jar.

This is the darkest film, so the characters who are the lightest needed to take a backseat. That's why Threepio is serious, Artoo is funny at the start and Jar Jar doesn't speak much.

i as well feel that lucas listened to the fans hatred towards jar jar. i think jar jar would of been a great character to add but it was the simple fact of his voice sounding to much like a jamaican stoner. how his voice been differeent he would of worked and not of been so annoying.
Gold it is! I was just saying that he does have a line and that's all that is needed. He's done his job, his story was told. He helped save Naboo, I guess...("my give up, my give up") came to mind... and he proposed the Chancellor get emergency powers. Job. Done.
Generally speaking, I don't think any artist should let other people be the driving force in dictating what to do or don't do or what to say or not say in their work.
This is particularly relevant in the age of the Internet and insta-polls where everyone seems to carry delusions of grandeur in having their opinions carry more weight than people who actually do it for a living.
Sadly, I think many studios are now buying into the Internet as the new focus group for making movies.
For example:
Fanboy A posted this so we should incorporate that into the sequel but don't forget to also incorporate Fanboy B's recipe for success even though it completely contradicts Fanboy A who is also an expert.

Lucas doesn't listen to negative fan reaction. Well, he hears it, but he doesn't care. He only cut Jar Jar down because this story is darker and there's nothing for him to do in this film. Hence he's only a background character. Much of his arc was finished in AOTC. He's there mostly as a connection to the story from TPM. That of unity between the Gungans and the Naboo.

I agree with you that Lucas usually doesn't listen to negative fans, but come on, for Jar Jar he did big time. After TPM, and alot of people disdained him, he cut him back for that reason only.
Can you name one main character in any of the 5 other SW movies, whose role was reduced to almost nothing in the next movie? Now the exception is someone dying in the next movie of course.
Here is the OT main characters, and they were all featured in all 3 movies:
Han, Leia, Luke, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C3PO, and Lando(2 movies) They all had good sized roles in every OT movie
Yoda and Kenobi died
For the PT:
Kenobi, Anakin, Palpatine, Padme, Yoda, R2-D2, C-3PO
Shmi, QuiGon died
Jar Jar was the only main player in the saga to have a major role in TPM, to having 2 scenes in AOTC, and having zero lines, or I think he said one line when they arrived on Coruscant. Every other characters was featured in one way or another in every movie they could be in.
Lucas did that because alot of older fans hated him, nothing more nothing less.
Come on guys, this one is obvious.
