It was perfect. It was done tastefully, yet still conveyed the darkness of the act. It finally established just how evil Darth Vader is. That combined with the force choke of Padme really made Vader far scarier to me than he was in the OT.

I think that you can't just say, whenever you watch a movie, *gasp* "That movie has violence! Eradicate it from the face of the planet!"

If you can't tolerate anything the least bit violent, don't watch Star Wars.

Personally, I think it is necessary for George Lucas to show some evidence of Anakin's turn to the dark side. What do you expect?

It was poorly done. I wanted to see younglings decapitated. That would have shown how sick Vader really was.

LOL.
I agree. Even though I haven't seen it yet.

I totally disagree. I saw the film this evening and I think the mind conjures up way nastier and more effective images than the film ever could. We linger in that dark chamber just long enough to register the fact that the Youngling talking to Anakin senses his fate - very, very nasty. Later, in the security hologram, you see Anakin engaging with a long haired, bearded Jedi and a teenage padawan but circling the fight are two younglings with drawn sabres.

Yeah, I changed my mind, most things are better left to suggestion. Then you can imagine the worst!

I have been following this and I CANNOT believe what I am hearing here.

I probably shouldn't single anyone out but "TrueJedi" I just don't understand you......

HOW IN THE WORLD can you be a fan of Star Wars, and have seen Episodes 4 - 6, and think that the youngling slaughter is somehow WORSE than any of the other violence shown in these movies.

I mean come on........ think about it..... what's the title of these movies Star "Wars". GET IT. Wars..... there is a TON of violence in these movies. THERE IS NEVER ANYTHING GREAT about War. War means death. Period. End of story. People die. There is nothing beautiful about murder..... And this applies to anyone.

"But these are children..... their innocent" - True Jedi.

If the death of INNOCENT people is what disturbs then you SHOULD HATE Star Wars. In Episode IV alone, ALOT of innocent people are MURDERED. Not killed (like in self-defense) but cold-blooded MURDER. And they were innocent.

Let's begin with A New Hope:

- Rebel office on Tantive ship: Vader breaks the officer's neck. He then throws the "DEAD" officer into a wall. Now this is not implied and it is ALL CLEARLY shown......AND HEARD. Sure, he was an officer. But the battle was over. Many of the soldiers were taken off for questioning. But Vader is so angry that he does this to this helpless officer. Why does Lucas do this.....Simple it's to show that Vader is EVIL. And we get that too. But again you might say...."well he was a soldier". So let's go to the next one.....

- Destruction of Alderaan: Vader and Tarkin blow up AN ENTIRE planet!!!! Talk about killing innocent people....as well as children. There were WAY more children here than in the Jedi Temple. But not only that Leia tells Tarkin, that the planet was peaceful WITH NO WEAPONS. So Tarkin makes a dela with Leia that if she tells him the system where the Rebel base is he will destroy it instead (a "military target" as he put it or one that is not defenseless). Leia agrees and says they are on Dantooine. What does Tarkin/Vader do???? BLOW UP THE PLANET ANYWAY!!!!!! A PEACEFUL INNOCENT PLANET. Why would Lucas show this??? Again to prove a point that Vader and Tarkin are evil. But you might be saying, "We don't see dead bodies".... I'm glad you asked......

- Murder of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru: This is the clincher for me. This happens early in the film, and it is nothing but an outright MURDER. You want to talk about INNOCENT....
- They are not soldiers
- They pose no THREAT tothe Empire
- They didn't have in their immediate possesion the droids the EMpire was looking for
- Had no idea aboutthe Death Star, plans or any of that (as a matter of fact the droids were going to have their memory erased)
Yet we see them in a scene MURDERED. And not only murdered, but we see their bodies as well. The younglings get off MUCH better in ROTS. All we see are MOTIONLESS bodies on the floor with NO MARKS on them. We see the SMOKING/BURNING/SKELETON (with some flesh) remains of Beru and Owen. How in the world can you see this and not be just as horrified by the YOUNGLING slaughter???? Owen and Beru are innocent. Face it. There is no denying this. They are simple farmers. Are you going to suggest to me because they are over the age of 18, that their deaths are somehow MORE tolerable???? Perhaps more pleasant???? Not as disturbing???? If I follow that type of logic, then adults should be more prepared for this than children. Adults are more prone to atrocities like this. Let me put this another way...... Which is worse: A complete stranger raping a 10 year old girl or a complete stranger raping a 20 year old woman. BOTH are INNOCENT. BOTH TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. And before you say something stupid like its easier to rape a child, a child may know martial arts where as an adult does not. The point is that they are botht victims of a TERRIBLE act.....

TrueJedi, I have just scratched the surface with the prequel trilogy alone. But whatthe main problem here is not whether or not children are killed versus adults its HOW ITS HANDLED. And in they youngling slaughter there is no blood whatsoever; nor is the actual killing shown. The bodies are shown on the floor with no appparent damage to them but WE KNOW they are dead. YOUR MIND fills in the blanks. Just like Beru and Owen's MURDER and the destruction of Aldereaan.

The hypocritical problem,TrueJedi, is this. We have become de-sensitized to DEATH, particularly in movies. The death of Owen and Beru should be JUST AS tragic as the youngling slaughter.... but it isn't. Just like the death of people in 3rd world countries is just as terrible.....but we are desensitized to it. MURDER is MURDER plain and simple.

And forthe sake of arguement. THe Jedi younglings are FAR FROM innocent. These are young Jedi. I repeat young Jedi. They are trained to fight. Do you realize that these CUTE JEDI have had more training in the force than Luke did in EMpire Strikes back????? Now think about that. These kids had been introduced to the force since birth. All you need to do is go back and re-watch AOTC, when Yoda is training the students, and they ALL have lightsabers. The kids can barely hold them, but they are training with swords that CAN CUT THROUGH ANYTHING at that young age. I don't know about you but Jedi are dangerous. And furthermore, Anakin goes to the temple to wipe out the remaining Jedi. NOT to kill children. It just so happens some of the Jedi there were young..... BUT THEY ARE STILL JEDI and because of this are a threat.

And finally the comment about this being fiction versus someone doing a historical picture is RIDICUlous. The story Lucas came up with involved the killing of ALL JEdi (including the young ones). Why should a storyteller NOT tell the story. If that's the story, then THAT"S THE STORY. Whether someone imagined it , or it has already happened it is the reality of the drama. It is the job of the stroyteller to DECIDE if this is neccesary to tell the story. And TrueJedi, the movie has been rated PG-13 accordingly. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO DECIDE FOR Lucas (or the rest of us for that matter if it's approprriate) whether this is neccesary or not. Particularly when there is NO VIOLENCE SHOWN AT ALL (its all implied). Especially when this type of conflict has been CONSISTENLY shown throughout ALL THE FILMS.

Well, there are my thoughts. Enjoy.

Children are innocents. Men are not. Women should also be afforded a degree of protection from such violence in films. Perosnally, it just bothers me. Others may disagree. As for the sand people, they are not human and are more like cruel beasts that only understand stark brutality. I have no more emotion for them than I do for fire ants.

How do you know the sand people children aren't innocent? Just because they're not human, doesn't mean anything in Star Wars.

I didn't like it at all. I wanted to see a kid lifted into the air on a lightsaber blade then fall off in pieces or something. Now after seeing it I get the feeling that it's the clonetroopers not Anakin that kills the kids.

I'm here to induce understanding. And perhaps vomiting.

I don't recall seeing a slaughter of kids in those films. I mean, you're going to have dead people, but dead kids?

Again, just kids.

You are seriously confused about this matter. It's about kids, and that's it.

I don't like seeing kids get killed in fiction or non-fiction but the point I was making was that in a fiction story, the writer has the choice of putting in dead kids or not. In non-fiction, there is no such choice.

And TrueJedi, the movie has been rated PG-13 accordingly. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO DECIDE FOR Lucas (or the rest of us for that matter if it's approprriate) whether this is neccesary or not.

I think you're losing your grip on reality. No one is making any decision for anyone else. This is my opinion. That's all. Sheesh.

Are you new to the SW universe? From what we know about the Sand People, they are not even worth giving a second thought to considering their monsterous behavior.

That's a stereotype created by the moisture farmers and other inhabitants of Tatooine. If you read the books, you would learn that they are actually a very smart race with a lot of traditions and rituals. They were the aboriginal people of Tatooine before the farmers came and started killing them. It's sort of like when the Caucasians took over the land of America and treated the Natives like they were uncivilized animals.

And don't forget that they're unfairly characterized by Ben as being worse shots than Stormtroopers, even though they can hit a pod doing 500 MPH with a primitive slugthrower and a stormtrooper can't hit a person doing a brisk jog 20 feet away.

/threadjack

Seriously, we have to see Vader at his worst in the PT because we really don't see it in the OT. In ANH he kills some rebels and Obi Wan, legitimate targets. He supposedly tortures Leia but obviously not very well, her cinnabuns are still intact.

In Empire, besides killing his own men, Vader is downright civilized. He makes a deal with Lando instead of killing everyone. Granted he keeps altering the deal but that's what Lando gets for not having a lawyer. He tortured Han but Han busted up his ride so it was justified. He fought Luke, again, a legitimate target but he didn't really try. In ROTJ he didn't do anything wrong.

So yeah, we need to see why he's considered the 2nd most evil and feared person in the galaxy. What better way than to kill some kids.

Watch the AOTC confession scene again.
Lucas prepped us with foreshadowing.
Remember?

"I killed them. I killed them all. And not just the men. But the women and the children too."

I'm not surprised by what happens in ROTS. After all, in the last film he massacred a whole village.
Why not a few younglings to make sure the Jedi are no longer a threat? There's a reason Lucas showed us the youngling scene in AOTC. So when he enters the temple in ROTS, we're already aware there are very young Jedi in da house.
