RE: "Only a Sith deals in absolutes..."
"So umm... Jesus is a sith?"
Thank you for saying exactly what bugged me about this line. Everybody keeps seeing George Bush in the "you're for me or against me" line. I couldn't care less about picking on Bush, I see Jesus in that line.
The sith deal in absolutes, the Jedi deal in "what I told you was true, from a certain point of view."
Of course, I take comfort in the fact that the two Jedi philosophies that so greatly contradict my personal viewpoints were both completely inconsistent just in the movie itself (never mind looking at external belief systems). The fact that Obi-Wan Kenobi was dealing in plenty of absolutes has been convered in this thread enough. The other was the "trust your feelings" nonsense. I find the fact that both Obi-Wan and Palpatine were both telling the same person to trust his feelings to acheive completely different objectives a perfect commentary on the idea of "trusting your feelings." (not to mention the fact that his feelings are what led him to marry Padme which is against the code of the same order that tells you to trust your feelings - but I'm getting off of the subject of this thread here....)
Everybody told Anakin to use his feelings, somebody should have told him to use his brain.

I beleive the line "Only Sith deal in absolutes" was in fact an absolute. So Obi Wan is a Sith eh.

Yes, there is no question about it, this is political commentary. It really, really bothered me. It's like, we all know movies are just movies, but when you're in that theatre, in the middle of the story it's like part of your mind let's you feel that it's real. Well nothing could have ruined it more for me than that little partisan comment. Of course it makes no sense at all related to the Jedi. The Sith are more relativists than the Jedi. Think of how Palpatine was trying to convince Anakin that the dark side wasn't really bad after all, depending on your point of view. The Jedi knew there was absolute good and evil in the galaxy. I mean come on, how more absolute can you get than 'dark' and 'light'. Or when Yoda told Luke. "Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try." I mean COME ON!!! You don't get more absolute than that, baby. Lucas was trying to be popular with his Hollywood crowd with this line. I love Star Wars but he really disappointed me with this. The rest of the movie was better than the other two though. No dumb humor.

I think what he means is that thinking in absolutes like you're either with me or against me (something psychologist call dichromotose thinking), is emblimatic of the sith's distorted view of things.

I'm pretty sure Lucas is not attacking anybody in particular here, or anywhere in this or his other movies. The entire PT outlines how a democratic republic becomes an Empire. His ideals of good and evil naturally come to light when trying to define who is good and who is evil in the movies.
To get angry with him for using a paraphrased line from the bible, a line which has been paraphrased or quoted by Bush, my mom, and many other christians I've met or seen on tv, is just a misplacement of anger.
Obviously Anakin's line is meant to further illustrate his character as an anti-christ figure,(until he flip-flops) along with the whole immaculate conception thing.
EDIT:
And of course Obi-Wan's line is meant as a counter-statement, and is used more to illustrate Obi-Wan's final resolve to destroy his former padawan than to make a broad and vague political statement.

"Do or do not, there is no try."
It doesn't get more absolute then that. I think Obi-wan only means that in terms of alliances. If the sith deem something neutral, it's worthy of destruction. Either you're an asset, or a liability.

Maybe we should look at the quote before that sets up the context of Obi Wan's absolute quote. Anakin says " you are either with me or you are my enemy" or something like that. then obi says only the sith deal in absolutes. I think Obi was really referring to Anakin's statement and his pov at the time.

I am a Republican and I like this line. It is when Obi-Wan finally realizes that Anakin is not able to be helped. For me its the acting and delivery of this line that make it work beautifully.

More likely where Lucas got the line in question than a George Bush speech.

Be careful of your friend George W. Bush. I sense his motives are not all what they seem.

Can it be that by saying this, Obi-Wan was simply replying to Anakin's ultimatum-like statement? Maybe, he was just making Anakin realize that he was a Sith and was gone.
YOU HAVE READ TOO DEEPLY into the line. Please don't start another thread so these people can show off how well they can B.S. and tell us everything and nothing at the same time.

The Sith is the best way to go if your a human, you don't have enough time to master the Jedi ways. They're for aliens only.
The Jedi are racist (except against humans). The Sith rule @$$.
