SLJ simply requested that he be given a purple lightsaber, instead of a blue or green one, for the the prequels. I suppose his reasoning was he just wanted a little more "flamboyance" added to his character, considering his acting resume. Jackson asked for purple because it's his favorite color. That's all there is to it. And since he did well on the set, got along with Lucas and never complained, he got what he wanted. Lucas: "Blue and green for the good guys. Red for the bad guys. That's just how it works." Jackson: "What about purple?" Lucas: "You might get purple." He did say later on that he wanted to stand out, but mostly it was because he likes purple. He had just finished filming "Unbreakable", which featured him wearing purple a lot. He wears either a purple, black, blue or white hat in public.

Vaapad was that form that was on the edge of the darkside. He developed it with the help of two other Jedi. One of which I believe fell to the darkside. Mace is no pushover like some of the Anakities and Kenobites want to believe. His fight scenes probably should have been done with an expert swordsman for realism.
