brook_33 posted: Until the final months before ROTS was released in theaters the rumor was that Anakin fell into lava, thus suffering the grievous injuries led him to donning the Darth Vader suit. While many Star Wars fans, including myself, liked this idea, having known it for some time, many fans did not like the idea. They claimed it wasn't realistic, to which I'd point out how realistic is Star Wars anyway?
But I digress, the question that stands is whether or not you were satisfied with Lucas' decision. Did you like seeing Anakin's stub of a leg catch flame and ignite his entire body? Would you have rather seen his fall into a melting pit within the factory, and some fans speculated? Or were you disappointed that Anakin did not simply fall in lava like we'd been led to believe for years?
If he would have fallen in the lava that would have been weird and unrealistic,he would have to swim out of the lava, or wait and just boil till Palps arrived it wold be hard to believe he fell in lava for a couple of minutes and lived.

Nah... too Lord of the Ringy.
Gollum already did it.
And I don't think he'd survive that.

And that's why Lucas changed it from his original writing. He came to the conclusion that it wouldn't work falling in. It had to be done a different way. This way, it's much more dramatic and gets the point across.

I dunno, I don't see ROTS movie as such a change from
the novelisations of the OT when it says Vader
burned in lava.
I mean,
the lava is what burned him.
Just because he wasn't doing swan lake
in molten lava, doesn't mean that much of a change.
Unless Sin, you have some arcane quote where GL
mentions he changed it explicitly, etc etc.
I think it's simply a matter of interpretation
of burned in lava...
In short, I was pleased with the way it was presented
and feel like the continuity was maintained.

I would've prefer to have the lava splash on top of Anakin, not like the giant wave that took down the platform which Anakin and Obi-wan were fighting on, but like a bucket-sized wave because I didn't like how he just caught fire without even touching the lava.

Nope. Because when you fall into lava, YOU DIE.
I preferred how it went down on film. Seeing Anakin ignite and just start burning alive was great. I didn't think George had it in him to put something like that in a Star Wars film. True horror.

I said I wanted the lava to splash on top of Anakin, not to have Anakin fall into the lava.

Close enough.
Oh, and I like the film version just as it is.
Parts of him did fall into a molten pit, so its true from a certain point of view. The film version is the way it should be.

They were pushing it by having Anakin that close to the lava. In reality, being that close to molten lava would have burnt him to a cinder. Falling in would have meant he had dissolved entirely.

They were pushing it by having Anakin that close to the lava. Well yeah. Actually during the fight, they were both too close to the lava to have any energy left.

RolandofGilead posted: No one ever said he fell into lava, not ever. Had he done so he would have burned up instantly, unlike the cartoony end to Gollum. The comments were always that he fell into a volcano or a molten pit. In truth, he fell beside a lake of fire and was consumed. It was a shock that Lucas showed as much as he did and it's gutwrenching even now to think of it. Anything more would have pushed RotS too far into unreality.
No one ever said he fell into lava, not ever.
Why would you say that??
I remember hearing a long time ago that he fell into lava. Were these just rumors that were going around in certain circles or what?

When I was a kid and I read that Anakin fell into lava, I spent a good hour just trying to figure out how the hell that would work. Getting splashed is one possibility, or having one of Palpatine's droids fish him out immediatley would be another. Either way it would be an enormous stretch of the imagination, even with the force. I saw a guy on tv stick a chicken drumstick in a lava stream for about 2 seconds. When he pulled it out, all that was left was the piece of bone he was holding onto. Anakin woud have been instantly disintigrated. However, despite being a significant change to what we were told/imagined, the way it worked out blew me away. Allowing Obi-wan and the audience to actually watch Anakin be lit on fire was something I NEVER expected from SW.

I think that the way GL did it in the movie works just fine for me. I never been able to picture Anakin falling into lava. his leg catching fire was much more believable to me.

Yeah, if he fell into lava, I would be forced to call the unrealistic police.
Though, there is lightspeed travel in Star Wars, so I guess that doesn't matter.
