That's the whole point. It's a kind of secret knowledge shared between the audience and R2-D2.

Basically R2-D2 is the one character of the entire saga who is effectively the audience's eyes. He is the connecting thread for all the episodes, the one and only character who witnesses the full story as it happened.

Ham_Solo, I would have to agree that R2-D2 may not get his memory wiped. I mean, he knows Obi-Wan and how to get there in ANH.

I thought Lucas said the "droids" and not C-3P0 will get their memories erased? But maybe the wily R2 unit will manage to partially escape from this process. It would be fun to see in the scene where they are being erased that R2 does something to suggest his erasure was not completed.

If you check out a thread in 3SA, you will find that both of these droids get their memory wipes. It was confirmed by GL it says, so no more of just R2 wink

Maybe just before R2 has his memory wipe, that he stores some of it elsewhere in his databanks that wont be affected by the wipe.

We won't be seeing R2 get his jets taken off. GL has announced that the warranty on expired on R2's jets, I'm not kidding

Well, there was a Holonet news article (though I know the Holonet news website is considered EU) about how the rockets on the R2 units had to be replaced every 20 years.
