Another topic to discuss, how do you think Artoo will "save the day." He's done something to save the day in all the other movies, when things look desperate.
TPM-He reactivated the shields on the Queen's ship.
AOTC-he stopped the droid factory from melting Padme.
ROts-??
ANH-He stopped the trash compactor
ESB-He reactivated the hyperdrive on the millenium falcon.
ROTJ-He let loose Luke's saber on the sail barge.
Where do you suppose R2 will save the day in ROTS? He could do something on the ship in the beginning where Obi-Wan and Anakin enter, maybe something to help them escape.
And on another note, I heard C3P0 has some conversations with Jar Jar Binks. Now THAT will be interesting to hear.

RE: *OFFICIAL THREAD* Roles of R2-D2 and C3-PO
Watching ESB again, something struck me. Most of us assume R2 doesn't get his memory wiped, since he knows where to find Ben and such.
However, the little guy doesn't seem to recognize Yoda on Dagobah one bit. He even goes so far as to try to take the flashlight back from the "little creature" that stole it from Luke.
That, and he doesn't say anything to Luke about him (Luke can understand R2, as evidenced by their banter aboard the X-wing).
Does this prove R2 DOES have his memory wiped?
The only way I could understand it is if R2 and Yoda don't have any interaction in TPM or AOTC, or ROTS for that matter.
Does anyone remember?

They both get their memory wiped. That is a good call about R2 not recognizing Yoda. Also, did it ever occur to anyone that R2 knows where Ben lives because Leia just got done programming that into him as we saw? Moreover, how do we know R2 was even going in the right direction, he was kidnapped by Jawas. I think it would be a cute idea for R2 to know everything, but it doesnt make much sense why he SHOULD.

Yeah, it would make sense that Leia tells him where to go.

If R2 has his memory wiped, then he will lose his personality. r2 units develop personalities when there memories dont get wiped after long period..(well i read that some where), ....
as for not reconising yoda. Yoda is acting very different and looks more rough/homeless in empire, perhaps r2 thought he was someone else, a begger not the leader of the jedi council

Artoo already has the death star plans at the end of AOTC. Think about it. When he connects with the Geonosian system to stop the smelter from frying Padme, he had access to the whole computer system. Perhaps this link allowed him to copy the files into his own system. Who's to say that he wasn't carrying around the plans to the bloody thing the whole time?
Back on Alderaan, circa 2 weeks before ANH begins, the rebels find out about the death star. Artoo, the ever present droid companion, pipes up that he has some old schematics for the thing. This prompts Leia to take off on her mission.
Just one of countless possibilities...

First off, the opening crawl to ANH tells you when the plans were obtained. And that was sometime just before the opening events of ANH. It was rebels who stole them. The plans for the Death Star in AotC weren't in the central computer. They were stored in the War Room and downloaded into a single-point storage location. Dooku had those and they were given directly to Sidious. Something as secret as those plans were most certainly not on the main computer.

Yeah, um, R2 didn't have the Death Star Plans all along. C'mon.
Watch ANH again.
But what about R2 not knowing yoda? I don't buy becasue he is old and looks different. that's ridiculous. if you saw your buddy from school 20 years later, you might not recognize him right away? but the second he spoke you would.
R2 has no idea who that green creature is. therefore, his memory has been wiped. Along with the stolen death star plans from Geonosis.

A lot depends on what exactly gets erased from the droids and who gets what erased. It's possible that R2 gets only a partial memory wipe since he can't verbally blab out what C-3PO could.

^Everyone can understand what R2 says. We can't, but Obi-Wan talks to him in his ship. Luke does. C3-PO can understand him, so why erase 3PO's memory, and leave R2's intact knowing R2 could slip up and say something to 3PO? That's really the crux of the arguement.

Ah - but Luke *can't* understand R2 without his ship to translate. Remember when Luke says, on Dagobah, "If you're saying coming here was a bad idea, I'm beginning to agree with you" or something like that?
Luke is just trying to "read" the beeps and emotional-sounding noises R2 is spouting.
R2 may actually be trying to tell him something entirely different.
Before anyone freaks, I do not subscribe to the theory that R2 "knows it all," but am playing Devil's advocate because it would be a little funny to watch all 6 films and know that R2 knows the whole story and no one listens except 3Po - and he's usually fed up and doesn't want to hear anything.

P-Dawg,
I hear you about the translator, forgot about that....BUT, Threepio CAN understand him. That's all you need to know. R2 is a blabber mouth. He's always complaining about something. He'd say something that 3po would hear....he gets the BIG wipe too. IMHO.

Spot on about 3PO, Forcefed.
I think 3PO poses more problems in terms of the saga continuity than any other element. LOL He certainly seems to be the focal point around which a lot of plot holes center.
Personally, I think both droids get wiped and reprogrammed. Probably Bail or someone says, "We'll take Leia to Alderaan and get these droids' memories erased - they've seen and heard to much classified information" or whatever...unbeknowst to anyone that 3PO may be able to "finger" Anakin as Vader or make the Tatooine connection...
Then, in ANH, the audience will wonder why Ben is so skeptical of "owning a droid" (especially when the viewer knows it's R2) and then (given his surreptitious looks during Leia's hologram and, later in ROTJ when he fesses up to Luke), the audience will see Ben as putting up a charade to protect himself, Luke, and everyone in the PT. Kenobi will become an even more key player in the PT films, imo.
But, really, R2 and 3PO never intereacted with Obi Wan *too* much in the PT. It is perfectly conceivable he just would not be able to ID them in ANH.

I think they get their memories wiped strictly to protect Leia, so that they could never tell her who her father and mother are. Because Obi Wan and Yoda don't want her to know.
