RE: *OFFICIAL THREAD* Roles of R2-D2 and C3-PO
Easy, Slugger. I've seen ANH aplenty and am familiar with the opening crawl. All I'm suggesting (in keeping with the spirit that according to Lucas this is, after all, Artoo's story) that it is POSSIBLE that the little guy has been packing the death star plans around in his "rusty innards."
I also realize that the plans were uber-secret, but it wouldn't be the first time that a back door was used to gain access to a critical area. Besides, it was a completely automated factory and who knows what kind of firewall those Geonosians are packing?
Plus, let's not underestimate Artoo's hacking skills.
Finally, it wouldn't be the first time Lucas has written himself into a corner (several of which have been discussed ad nauseum in the forums).
As I alluded to earlier, it depends on a certain point of view.

How about Anakin erases their memories when they learn he's done something he doesn't want anyone else to find out about?

In here, speculation quickly becomes assumption, and then assumption becomes fact, and reveals itself as disappointment when what everyone forgets began as speculation turns out to be false.

So aside from Artoo working with the Jedi in the beginning and Threepio assisting Padme - what other information do we have about the droids in ROTS?
We know Artoo witnesses a duel - is this the Dooku duel?
It doesn't seem like the droids will have very much interaction in ROTS.

I believe I saw somewhere (mabey OS) That the FIRST time we see the droids (ANH) is also the LAST place we see them (on the TantivIV) in ROTS.
The captain of the ship should be "captain Antilles"
C-3PO ANH "Our last master was Captain Antilles."
During the Droid sale, Owen quips "You, I supose you're programmed for etiquitte and protocol."
Knowing Owen most likely never left that dustball of a planet, this would show his rememberence of 3PO. When 3PO was there, he was a dull grey color and Owen probably assumes that there are thousands of droids with the name C-3PO!
Just my speculation!

Hmm, Artoo is a bit of a perplexion. Saying that "He is the property of Obi-Wan Kenobi" poses a few questions.
Leia could have told him that while downloading the Death Star info I suppose. Seeing that Her "father" Bail, knows where Obi-wan is. Then again, Artoo could have retained some info thru a memory wipe. (he is quite a clever little one!) We may have to wait till the film for that one!

R2-D2 will save someone's life, and C3-PO will walk around saying silly things and be confused. That's pretty much it :P

I still wonder how it is that OB Wan does not even remotely recognize R2D2. You would think he has been waiting for a sign for years that Luke was ready to be trained.
Also,
Maybe the reason R2D2 knows where OB Wan lives is because his memory was erased and then OB Wan goes into hiding. It depends on when the memory was erased. That can explain why R2D2 seems to remember some things but not others.

as far as owen not remembering 3PO or r2 is because 1 3PO had no gold plate and remeber R2 coming with padme and anikin to the lars homestead? And obviously GL wanted to make a point by having padme say R2 what are you doing stay with the ship? he wants everyone to know the owen never sees R2.

RE: *OFFICIAL THREAD* Roles of R2-D2 and C3-PO
i just saw this:
Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) revealed to the official Star Wars Web site that his character will have the last word in the upcoming final prequel film Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith, and in the same set on which he had the first line in Episode IV—A New Hope.
here:http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?category=0&id=30368
in the sidebar
although i am having trouble finding it on his site:http://www.anthonydaniels.com
interesting nonetheless, what could those words be, is it the scene referenced on MF about memory wiping?

yea but its quite a few years between rots and anh, it would be like almost being hit by a car then seeing it years later, its highly doubtful that you would remember that car

RE: *OFFICIAL THREAD* Roles of R2-D2 and C3-PO
Why are we assuming that Owen doesn't recognize 3P0 in ANH? Don't you remember when he says, "You, I suppose your programmed for etiquette and protocol." Followed by, "I have no need for a protocol droid." If that's so, why even bother talking to 3PO? He had no use for most of the droids there but he didn't talk to all of them. My theory; we all know how vocal 3PO is about his expert functions. He babbles about being fluent in 6,000,000 forms of communication, etc etc. Own DID recognize 3PO and was trying to pick on him because he remembered how 3PO bragged about himself all the time.
3PO then talks about his other functions and Owen probably just thinks, "WHat the heck. I'll buy him since his memory has obviously been erased and he was a good droid years ago when we had him last." And since 3PO was so insistent on having R2 join him, owen surrendered to buy him too.

I just watched A New Hope last night and i found it odd that even tho c3po has his memory erased and so did r2d2 uncle owen or aunt beru doesnt even remember them. but i kinda thought maybe most droids look alike and threepio did have the gold plating and its just funny they dont even act like they remember at all since they saw them on episode 2 on tatooine
