For the past 4 years KnightShade and I (and a few member of the USS Tranquility willing to brave the cold) have been heading out to Mendon Ponds park to feed the hungry chickadees that live on the Bird Song trail at the park. For the past couple years we've timed our excursion with the annual WinterFest that takes place at the park. This year it's Sunday, January 22nd from 11am-8pm. Usually we feed the chickadees in the morning then visit some of the events that are part of WinterFest, eat lunch and head home.
Anyone else interested in going? Keep in mind this is not for the faint of heart as we will be outside in the snow most of the time. However, the feel of tiny little chickadee claws landing on your finger as they pick out their favorite seed is something not to be missed!

Here's a link to directions to the park via Monroe County's Park website.
And here is a mapquest map to the intersection that is the entrance to the park you need to use to get to the Nature Center. You can then plug in your home address and get point-to-point travel directions.
You guys are going to so luck out. Usually we trudge through calf high snow when we go to the park. I just hope there's still plenty of chickadees to feed as I'm sure most of the other WinterFest activities (sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, etc) will be cancelled.

Sorry I can't be there with all today. I've been sick all week and now that I'm getting better I don't think being outside in the cold is a good way to keep winning the battle.

Well, although it turned out to just be me, KnightShade, Connor and our friends Mike & Becca - I think we still had a great time. Here's the pics (sorry they're all sideways - at some point I'll take the time to rotate them all).
First we visited the folks from Braddock's Bay Raptor Research, then we spent 2 hours walking the Bird Song trail and feeding the Chickadees (and saw a herd of 6 "rein"deer), then we visited the Astronomy Club and Geocaching stations. There were a ton more people at the park so we didn't get to feed as many birds as we normally do, but it was still fun.

You're all invited to join us on Jan 21st at Mendon Ponds park for WinterFest. We'll be starting off with our 5th annual Chickadee Feeding excursion and follow that with some of the WinterFest activities.

It's a lot of fun.

At the moment, we're still planning on attending this although it looks like the high for that day will only be 30*. If anyone else is interested we can meet at Mendon Ponds nature center at 10am. Post here so we know to look out for you and have enough seed backs to feed the chickadees.
