Enroute to Brentaal

"Only one, sir," Layor said. "What equipment and weaponry will we be given?"

Major Klusto answered, "You can find additional information on your equipment and weapons on the datacard." The datacard that they all had been given informed the stormcommandos that they would be issued a set of stormcommando armor, a standard blaster rifle, smoke and stun grenades, plastic explosives, spare power packs, a combat knife, survival equipment, and communications gear.

Keraam pressed the trigger on his stick and emerald blasts of energy stabbed toward the clumsy Y-wing starfighter. The laser blasts tore through the shields and the hull within seconds. The ancient craft detonated into a ball of flame as fuel and oxygen ignited.

"Excellent work, Cadet." The Instructor's voice praised over the interanl comm system. "Let's see how you fare against the next wave."

And as if on cue, two more targets dropped out of hyperspace and adjusting course to intercept the TIE Starfighter.

"I have a question, Major," Zanis said, "What are these natives armed with?"

"That information is unfortunately, unknown to us. However, Intelligence believes that if they are armed with anything it will be simple hand blasters and the occasional rifle," Major Wagner answered. "Though that does not mean these natives will be easy to subdue. Expect the unexpected."

He waited to see if there were anymore questions.

Leran faught back his instinct to dive and out of the way of the crossfire the two Headhunters had placed him in. Instead he nosed his starfighter upward to fly between the two rebels and out of their line of fire. The maneuver placed him above and a clear shot at either one of the Z-95s.

The Instructor sent Cadet TK-782 to the simulation complex where he would begin the next part of his training. The Sim Instructor there then gave the Cadet the equipment he needed in order to be in the simulation. Once inside, the recruit found himself on the outskirts of a rebel communications outpost. It consisted of three buildings, a landing platform and one giant relay dish pointing toward the sky. The compound was surrounded by a wire fence two meters high and rebel patrols followed the fence line. There was also guard towers at the gate with spotlights searching the area outside the compound.

The sky was filled with stars and two cresent moons on the horizon to the southeast and to the northwest just coming over the horizon was a cerulean gas giant. Around the compound and where TK-782 was, is a thin forest. Exotic creatures native to the planet howled or hooted into the night.

Over the Cadet's communication link inside his infantryman helmet, the Instructor explained the mission details to him. "This is a sabotage mission. The primary objective is to destroy the communications dish with the satchel explosive. Secondary objectives and essential to your escape are to sabotage the motorpool, destroy the guard towers and escape through the main gate with a stolen speeder. You are alone on this mission and are equppied with a DL-44 pistol and a E-11 rifle. Any other weapons or power packs you will have to pick up inside the compound. You are wearing light armor over green infantryman BDUs. Good Luck, Cadet."

Quickstrike, my apologizes for taking so long in getting you started. I hope this training mission will be to your satisfaction.

General Gregory Thane & Colonel Freja Covell

SSD Terror - Undisclosed Location

The ISD Conquest soon fell in with the rest of the supply fleet off the starboard bow of the invisible Super Star Destroyer. The Captain of the Conquest did not particularly enjoy being a taxi service for the General, but at least it was something different out of the mundane patrol route and guardianship of the supply ships.

General Thane did not like using the ship for transporting him to and fro throughout the galaxy, but it was necessary in keeping the Terror's location a secret. Even though the cloaked ship was always constantly on the move, a tracking device on his shuttle could reveal the ship's location as if it was not equipped with a stygium cloaking field. Thus why he traveled to the Star Destroyer at a random location first, returned the shuttle to whatever system he departed from and came to the Terror aboard the Conquest.

It was redundant, but necessary.

"Navigation, calculate the next jump." Admiral Sarn commanded as General Thane strode onto the deck of the large bridge. "Comms, upload the coordinates to the rest of the fleet."

General Thane observed the crew members busily working at their tasks, keeping his ship fuctioning properly. He was not phased at the sight of identical faces, he had purposely replaced the entire crew of the ship with clones to make it harder for infiltrators and sabotuers. "I see you kept my ship in one piece, Admiral."

Admiral Sarn slowly spun around on his heel at hearing the voice of his superior. "General Thane." He was surprised to see the young man return so early from Coruscant. "The Terror is running at 100% as usual, sir."

Sarn was an idiot, but Thane only tolerated him because he was the most familiar with the ship and its capablities. And Sarn was an excellent administrator. If it ever came down to a space battle with someone, he would leave the fighting to one of the clones whose expertise is in space combat. "Good. Where are we headed today?"

"Random Jump Coordinate 340A, sir." Sarn answered in the code Thane had devised to keep the Terror's jump pattern random at all times. He, Covell, Sarn, the ship Captains and the navigators were the only ones who really knew where the fleet headed with each jump. The random pattern was always updated every month just in case someone somehow got a hold of the schedule.

"That one is a distant jump."

"Yes, sir, it is."

"I'll leave you be to run the ship. Inform me of anything out of the ordinary, Admiral." Thane turned and left the bridge to meet with Colonel Derricote and Covell down in the labs. He wanted to see how things were developing for the Doppleganger operation. Once there he wasted no time on pleasantries and went straight to the questioning.

"Is the subject almost ready?" He inquired, stepping over to the cloning tank that held the developing body of a clone.

"It will be ready within a week, sir." Derricote informed, sounding proud at his creation.

"Have you given him the other sample, Freja?" Thane asked.

Covell nodded. "It'll be a month before this subject is completed. But I recommend we hold off putting this one on the board until a ripe opertunity presents itself."

"Of course. I would not be so foolish to do anything else otherwise." Thane agreed and turned away from the clone floating in the slimey green fluid. "I have another job for you, Freja."

"Sir?"

"You will return to Myrkr and inform Talon Karrde of the legalization of his operations in Imperial space." The young General handed Covell two datacards. "On the one are the details of jobs for Karrde, the other is for you."

Colonel Covell looked over the two datacards curiously and nodded in understanding when he read the second one. "I won't fail you, sir."

"I suggest you depart now with the Conquest before we jump to hyperspace." Thane warned and Covell saluted sharply before quickly leaving.

Imperial Space, Near Dantooine

"What is it?" he called, looking up from yet another report of the damage that had been caused to his shipyards, and some of the vessels under his command. He met the gaze of the Imperial Officer before him. A Lieutenant. "Well?"

"Apologies for disturbing you, sir, uh, Admiral," the man stammered. Under the gaze of the Grand Admiral, the young officer's nervousness had only escalated. "R-reports from the s-shipyards have come in, s-sir," he said as he approached the Admiral's desk and set down a set of datacards. "S-sorry for the inter-ruption." A few moments later, the man was gone, and the Grand Admiral, alone.

Grand Admiral Grek Vullorn waited until the door slid shut before he reached over to insert one of the cards into his datapad. He read over the report, logging in the losses as he glanced over them, two Patrol Ships, one Light Corvette, a Lancer Frigate and as VSD II. It was not good news, but it confirmed earlier reports from the losses suffered from the hit-and-fade attack that had been launched at Yaga Minor. The loss of the Shatter Spray and the Emperor's Hand would be cause for the Empire to strike back.

He cleared his thoughts, deciding to develop a plan for his counter-attack at a later date. For now, he looked back over one of the other datacards he had been studying earlier. Upon inserting it into his datapad he was reminded of the familiar display. Droid starcraft were being assembled at his shipyards. All seemed to be going according to plan. He sent a message to Imperial Intelligence, requesting an agent to be placed in the operation, undercover.

Once the message was sent, he sat back for a few moments. He stood, and made his way toward the bridge of the Hammer. It was time for him to visit the place where he had lost so much. Perhaps he would use the destruction to display the evils of the enemy to a man united in arms for a common cause. Yes, he would do exactly that. He sent word, requesting a meeting with Grand Admiral Duflin at Yaga Minor.

She remained seated as she gave a short nod and cut the transmission with the Emperor. Ysanne Isard clicked the comm board to receive the next message. The face of one of her guards appeared before her. "Mission successful," he said. Isard cut the transmission a few seconds later, and smiled. All was going according to plan. She stood and walked out from the communications room and toward the Palace Throne room, where she seated herself.

The room had been swept for bugs, and she was alone, without any chance of someone looking on on her. Director Isard sat upon the Throne for several hours, deep in thought, before she stood again and headed back to her quarters, where she sent a call to her an agent at the Lusankya.

It was a difficult task, but one that was challenging. He was among the best of the best when it came to slicing. The man known as the WebMaster was able to infiltrate the highest security of virtually any network. He worked well under pressure and seemed to remain without a hint of fatigue. Some joked that fatigue came from field work. He met such comments with a cold gaze. He was Imperial Intelligence. He was better than them.

If only the Smugglers Alliance was as easy to bring down as it had almost been so long ago. He had managed once, until the Alliance's security system was upgraded. Now, his every effort to enter was with great caution. Traps lay at every entrance, security locks at every opening, alarms at every window. Such was the nature of his job, however.

His hands worked quickly, keying in his commands as his eyes read line after line of code. Soon he would break through. It would only be a matter of time before he did so. And when he finally did, Cyber Nine would be his. He smiled at the thought, a smile of longing, of pleasure, and of vengeance.

"Yes, you distrub me for what reason?" the normally quite Admiral spoke. The young Lt. Standing infront of him quickly handed him a datapad, containing a recently recieved message. "Is that all?"

"Yes Sir"

"Very well, dismissed."

Reading over the message, the newly familiar name seemed to be the recipient, Grand Admiral Grek Vullorn. Isard had spoken of this man, and said he was worth speaking to as soon as possible. Perhaps this was the perfect time to do so. Walking onto the bridge, Randal leaned over to say his orders to the helmsman.

"Plot a course to Yaga Minor, i wish to be there as soon as possible. Inform the Fist of Fondor of the coordinates."

The two ships quickly turned outward from the coruscant system, and jumped towards their new destination, for a meeting that would set the course of the empire in the Outer Rim.

Near Yaga Minor

Upon dropping out of hyperspace, the view presented of Yaga Minor was a devastating one to behold. The flaming wreck of an ISD construction drew attention to the damaged shipyards. Several larger vessels were using their tractor beams to recover the debris and wreckage of a number of other vessels, including a VSD II and a Strike Cruiser, among others.

Grand Admiral Duflin was sent word of a shuttle requesting permission to dock with his own SSD, Night Hammer. Clearance of a high level accompanied the request, along with a short message from Grand Admiral Grek Vullorn requesting a private audience.

I've taken extreme liberty with the following in order to speed things along. If it is unsatisfactory for me to have done so, consider what follows to be nullified. If not, then I hope you enjoy efficiency as I do.

He had been summoned to meet with Grand Admiral Duflin in the veteran's private quarters. Vullorn admired the room, and commented on his thoughts. "A most impressive vessel," he said, a smile upon his lips. "A grand icon of the Empire's might." He had been looking about the room, but now his gaze turned to Duflin. "I have learned of your record of service. Very few men have achieved victory as often as yourself. It takes an iron will to be loyal, and skilled enough to bring about the reign of the Empire. You're a good man, Admiral."

Such comments were truth, more so than flattery. Vullorn had very little to gain from complimenting a man who was of almost equal rank as himself, for gain was not his intention. "As you have seen," he continued, "the Rebels struck at our shipyards. I was on Bastion at the time and regret my inability to fight off the enemy. It would be a lie to say we drove them off. From what I have gathered, the attack was aimed to cripple my operations. They did not succeed, of course, but there was a very real danger."

He leaned forward slightly, as if to confide in the Supreme Commander. "I trust that you will agree with me when I stress the importance of the Outer Rim, and in particular the region around Bastion. Unfortunately, the Emperor does not allocate us as much funds or forces as Lord Vader once did. His Radiance is simply interested in protecting the Core. Tell me, is this not a slightly dangerous choice of direction for the Galactic Empire?"

ISD Conquest - Myrkr

The Imperial-class Star Destroyer Conquest fell into a high orbit over the temperate planet, Myrkr. A squadron of TIE Fighters exited the main hanger along with several tugs carrying cargo pods and several troop transports. Two TIE Fighters exited with a Lambda-class Shuttle and diverged from the main group to head for Karrde's main base. The main group headed for the forest where the indigenous ysalamiri lived.

With the shuttle safely landed at Karrde's base, the TIE Fighters circled once and left to rejoin the Conquest. The shuttle ramp lowered and Colonel Covell and Major Brek exited the vessel, unarmed.

Representatives from the Empire had arrived for yet another visit. Karrde had expected as much, and his men were prepared, as always. Andrel Baldrac headed out from the Base to greet the newcomers. He had been informed of the arrangement with the Empire, as had many of the others. He saw the arrangement as a way to make considerable gain, but not without cost. Too many smugglers had suffered at the Empire's hand for any of them to become blindingly loyal. So it was that he approached with a keen eye and a keen mind, ready to greet what came for him.

IC as General Hargroves

He panted heavily as he looked at the recorded message once more from Mylenko.

No..should delete it, that's procedure, no need to watch it again, no need...no...oh god...

He gulped again as a feeling of doom settled upon him. He had not asked for such responsiblity. He was an administrator: and a damn fine one at that. He had organised the networking channels of Imperial Intelligence in the core as best as they had ever been, everything running at peak efficency, optimum effectiveness.

But he was not a leader. Not a strategic thinker. He could streamline, but offer direction? No...No, only the Madame Director or the Assistant Director could do...

that. That was it really. She was away on Bastion, concerned with her own affairs, and the Assistant Director who SHOULD of been providing that direction for the core was dead.

This cannot be. The Viceroy as well...

He shook his head, as the footnote report to Mylenko's message drifted to his gaze. It was obviously added after Dayvid Mylenko had recorded the encrypted holo, detailing the final time of death of Viceroy Hope Jusila, one of the most promising up-and-comers in the Imperial Intelligence rank and file.

Well, he'd just have to provide leadership, he'd just have to...

"Sir?"

"Argh!" he jumped, spinning around wide eyed to view the quizzical Agent standing in his doorway. "Oh..ahem. What is it?" he demanded, trying to recall the imperious lilt of the late Imperial Assistant Director in his voice and tone.

The agent did not comment on the nervous stammer, but filed it away for later gossip.
"General, we are under attack. The warning klaxons just blew. Should we initiate the response?"

Hargroves mind whirled. What in the blazes was the response? Dugal would know. Hell, Dugal probably designed it, implemented, just in case something went...

Ah! That was right!

"Are we being jammed, Agent?"

"Yessir. Although a courier vessel has departed to alert our Navy."

"And how far away would Captain Mylenko be?"

"Who sir?"

"Never mind." Hargroves snarled, pursing his lips and cursing internally at the slip up. Of course a young agent wouldn't know about Byss, he was probably the only man on planet who did.

Then what on earth was the standard response?

Better not play with fire. "No, hold off on the Response for now Agent. Keep me appraised of anything of note, I'll head to the control nexus and see after the welfare of our administration. Dismissed."

The agent left, and Hargroves exhaled. Good, alone again. Alone to work things out.

Could he hide under his desk? No, that would be hardly dignified. He'd have to...he'd have to...

bite the bullet.

Sighing, he left for the nexus, and hoped the Rebels wouldn't be able to take the capital again.

IC as Acting-Viceroy Mylenko, Byss system, aboard the Imperial Justice

Turning to the viewport one last time, he watched as his plan was initiated.
One by one the lights in the asteroids died, and black roamed freely once more. The Golans turned on a specified pattern of running lights as did the fleet. Now, they'd be extremely hard to distinguish from the bright starlight of the Core.

The construction yards had been moved out to near one of the moons, and they too fell dark and silent, hidden from any sensor scan or visual inspection.

Byss itself began to lose it's glow, as buildings everywhere cut their lighting and factories began to churn silently in the dark.

Most were run by droids anyway, they seldom needed light.

Turning to the shadowy figure of the Helmsman, he nodded.

"Good. The Eye has been moved to position?"

"Just one more rock floating among thousands of 'em Sir."

Mylenko grinned. "Good." This was more then good. He almost willed the Rebels to come sniffing around here now.

None would leave the system alive.

The Headhunter's shields quickly fell as it tried to escape by diving down, a mistake that cost the rebel pilot dearly. The old starfighter disappeared from Leran's tactical display and bits and pieces of the rebel ship bouncing off his shields confirmed the kill. The second Headhunter dropped in behind the Gunboat and pelted the rear shields with dual-linked blasts.

He did not know what it was that the Imperial was up to, but he was suspicious of treachery. Time would reveal whether or not those suspicions were well founded. The smuggler attempted to hide his amusement at the Imperial's annoyance. It was not his fault that the Colonel was annoyed. "Mr. Karrde is away on business," he replied. "Until he returns to Myrkr, I have been instructed to head his operations on-planet. Like I said earlier, is there something I can do for you?"

Andrel Baldrac did not know why it was that the Colonel wished to meet with his boss. He suspected that it was something regarding their arrangement, which was made upon Covell's last visit to Myrkr, but could not be sure. He waited patiently for the man's response.
