Deimos Odai/ Village/ Coruscant

The trip could have been better, what with all the insanity that Jules had caused with her preperations. Seriously, how many ways are there to calibrate a tachometer? It had been almost obsessive, really. But it was all said and done with, finally. And there hadn't been any problems getting setup for some practice runs. Now all there was, was the waiting. And more waiting... and getting nervous cause it was the last race of the season.

The Defel found himself absently wondering who all was going to show for this race... obviously Dai would, and Nava. They'd been the staples that'd kept things going all year. Would the new racer, Orun show? It wasn't seeming terribly likely. And there there was Kaida... She'd disappeared long before he had, but somehow had scrapped up enough points to be invited. She could very easily be trouble. At this point it was anyones race, as they'd all proven that they could take home the gold. However, it was gonna depend on whether or not Nava could be taken down. Maybe Kaida would be intersted in working together again?

Time would tell, either way. And there wasn't much time left...

Deimos got up and headed towards the track. No way was he going to be late for this race. Jules would skin him a live quite literally that were to happen. I just have to stay relaxed... otherwise I won't stand a snowballs chance on Tatooine.

OOC: Just a small post to move Dai from the bar to his room and be ready for the race.

IC: Dai Konuma
Location: Racer's Bar, Village, Coruscant

There was the toast, and then there was nothing. Nava sighed, saying: "Me go. Get ready to give em good race."

Dai's response was a simple nod, nothing more. He was too much enveloped in his own thoughts to really give it all that much heed. His mind wandered to nearly every aspect of the Championship - the racers, the course, the cup, the strategies...

This was it. It all came down to this in the end. This was, in effect, the penultimate moment in the second season. Tomorrow would be their final salute. It was time to give the fans what they wanted...for one last time.

Dai took a drink before realizing that the cup was empty. Sighing, he paid the bartender than retired to his room. The race was going to be tomorrow, and from every sign, it looked like he would need a lot of sleep this night.

And now, without further adieu....

***IC: The Race of Champions***
The Skies of Galactic City, Coruscant

The Race of Champions was really unlike any other race that had preceded it, a fact that the GPRL Board of Governors was extremely proud of. The race was a Night Race, so there was plenty of time for the racers to arrive on scene, spend the afternoon in the village, gear up, and ready their pods. The racers had all arrived on scene as the sun slowly set over remaining planetary skyline, still marked by the spires of buildings that had survived the Yuzzhan Vong invasions or were slowly being rebuilt. The fans continued to build as they took their positions in the many tall bleachers erected on the roofs of buildings lining the race track.

The skies turned from red to purple, and eventually a starry black… the excitement was in the air. It was absolutely electric. It was time for the diadem of the Podracing Season. The final race, where the best competed and fate would ultimately be decided. Was it a race of destiny? Some would say so. But for the racers sitting in their pods as they were elevated via repulsorlift to the track, they knew this here was the biggest race of their lives.

At the area demarcated as the starting line, two crossing pillars of light shot into the air accompanied by a musical fanfare, creating an elaborate flourish as the Pods finished their trek up to the repulsortrack. From under the pods, a shimmering blue glow, similar to the magfields found on most capital ships shot ahead of them as the track formulated, red sensor lights turning to green as the systems activated. Following the floor a few seconds later was the electro-walls, powerful magnetic charges that would prevent the pods from falling off into the Coruscant sky.

As the riders sat in their pods, a hoverscreen descended in front of them, Comissioner Slydell filling their view ports. The racers couldn’t see it, but it was the same feed that the rest of the crowds were seeing all along the racetracks.

“Greetings Racers….” The Commissioner said, decked in an immaculately crisp suit and standing in front of a very typical “important” style background, starmap, comfy chair, etc. “… And congratulations for making it here. Before you lies the GPRL’s Race of Champions. You are all Champions of the Podracing Circuit, the best of the best. You have my wishes for the best of luck here, in this race of destiny, and my sincerest thanks for making the Second Season of Podracing a successful one. Stay safe, and I look forward to seeing each and every one of you compete.”

The man gave a gracious nod as the screen flickered out, leaving a GPRL logo. The screen floated up a few more feet, and then, a large “4” appeared on it, instantly as the twin light pillars in front of the racers lit up red…

The roar of the crowds was deafening, not only from the starting line, but all throughout the Coruscanti skyline as all the fanclubs, there in full force, began screaming their hearts out. Rich and Poor, Young and Old, all present and able to observe their favorite racers compete. The major networks switched the “race mode” as the camera droids assumed their positions along the tracks….

One more countdown, one more launch…

“3” the screen changed, the red lights holding…

“2” came up, the red pillars still holding…

“1” appeared, the pillars changing to a blaring yellow…

And then, in that ever heart racing second…

“O” as the Green Lights shone, green flare style fireworks shooting up in the night sky...

And with that, the final race of the Second Podracing Season began. The skies of Coruscant beckoned as the racers shot forth…

Race Post #1

Everything at the moment seemed to be some shade of surreal. The night had passed by quietly, and although Dai had some trouble sleeping, he was eventually able to rest, and woke up early the next day. This...this was it. It was the accumulation of all his purpose, of all his skill, everything. His entire life had, in essence, been that of a true podracer. His life revolved around the game; when he was not racing, he yearned too, when he was, he felt alive.

Yet this Championship had the great title of finality to it. This was it. The second season of Podracing had its ups and its downs, from the disappointing show at Seafoam Six to the thrilling ride at Geonosis...it was, in the end, the climax of everything.

The announcer went through his usual tension-building, yet it didn't seem to last as long as he thought it would...perhaps the amount of adrenaline was speeding things up.

Double red.

The racers around him grew adgitated, awaiting for the final calls. This was it...could it really be happening?

Red.

Dai's heartrate beat faster. This...this was...

Yellow.

Jecht. Rethen. This was it.

Green.

Everything faded as the speed overtook Dai and he found himself hurtling through the air at a mad pace, dashing for the ultimate goal. He took quick looks about him, but he was thoroughly focused. He was going to win this...he had to.

OOC: Still an SPL of 1?

IC: Deimos Odai/ Starting Line
Race post 1

It was the start of the finish. The finish to the season. The possible finish to Deimos career as a racer, as no one knew what the league was going to be doing about next year. In short, it was a time to live life to the fullest, and take no prisoners on the track. Easier said than done, given the competition in this race.

Sitting in his pod out on the track, he looked around. There were four of them. The main four from the season, two from the early going and then the two that had taken their places. Absently Deimos listened to the pre-race doodads. He'd never really been much for speechs, they just took up time. And they seldom were entertaining. But they were part of the formula, the way that things were. It wasn't likely that would ever go away, as politics and bureacracy always had to have their fingers in all of the pies available.

Then the lights came on.

The first red light set it's solid tones before him.

Making sure that all of the thrusters were firing, and everything was ready to go he sat tensed like the feral beast his ancestors had once been.

The second one took it's place, gleaming it's equally bright color.

Starting to rev up the engines, it was about that time...

Yellow glared at him, cautionary sunlight beckoning him to take off.

Just a few more seconds...

Then the green light blazed its unnatural hue and they were off. The roar of the pods bouncing off of the buildings of the gleaming night skies. There weren't too many nasty turns on this track, the machine gods be praised for that. The only truely evil spot was on the other side of the track, this was going to be about straight speed. And Deimos pod had been designed to push harder in that department than most of the other pods.

Glancing around, he saw Dai nearby and waved at him. It wouldn't be seen, but somehow he felt the other might know that he was saying hi. Tucking in behind the human he decided that drafting would be the way to go as they powered through the early turns, shifting gears to higher ends of speed.

Race Post #2

Time itself seemed to slow down from its sudden speed as every part of this track played out before his eyes. He had studied it, sure, but his mind had been so lost in thought with all that had happened to him that he could never concentrated, and he found himself at an uneasy state of inability to recall the course. However, his mind couldn't change from its sharp concentration that he found himself at ease, and he felt the grand feeling of nirvana that usually accompanied races, yet this time he didn't feel at ease. He wouldn't be able to feel calm until this was all over, and from the looks of it, that was still a bit far off.

He had four main opponents. Deimos, Kaida, Nava, and Dorun. Deimos Odai had raced against Dai in Fireball Alley quite well, yet afterwards seemed to have disappeared from the racing scene, yet he had returned for this race...perhaps the allure of the Championship was too much for him. Kaida Alcorn was a bit unknown to Dai, and that's what made her dangerous. She was the only racer here that he had no previous experiences with, and so she was a complete wildcard, and that's not something Dai appreciated.

There was Dorun, the newcomer, who had proved himself to be doing quite well, and had shot in at the last moment and was quickly garnering attention, and if all went well, Dai looked forward to the challenge. This would only make it more fun.

And then there was Nava Kree, the main person he had concentrated on. She was his rival...his conversation with her last night had been pleasant, and yet, he knew that she would be nothing but brutal on the track today. This is the ultimate accumulation...this is the ultimate goal...and Nava was the enemy's queen on the chess board. He had to account for her in every move that he made, or else he'd find himself quickly in last place.

Dai wanted to win this. In that, there was no lie. But he was going to have to work hard if he wanted to beat them all, and he wasn't about to give up. This was the Championship, and he was going to treat with the respect it deserved.

Nava Kree
Race Post #1

A nite race. That alone was worth alot of excitement. She was so geared up, that she could not even think of sleeping. She went over the track in her mind, over and over again. Soon the sky began to slowly change. The skies turned from red to purple, and eventually a starry black… the excitement was in the air. It was absolutely electric.

It was BEAUTIFUL.

Nava all but leaped into hre pod, as it came close to the starting time. She scanned the thousands of faces, desperatly trying to see if perhaps some of her family had made it to the last races. She saw an area marked out by the SA, but it was too far away to tell. She would find out soon enough. She made her way to her pod.
At the area demarcated as the starting line, two crossing pillars of light shot into the air accompanied by a musical fanfare, creating an elaborate flourish as the Pods finished their trek up to the repulsortrack.WOW!! Nava's ears turned, as she watched all the fancy fireworks.

Nava looked at that, with interest. And the night sky..was perfect for her. She loved the dark. She was going to enjoy this race. As the riders sat in their pods, a hoverscreen descended in front of them, Comissioner Slydell filling their view ports. The racers couldn’t see it, but it was the same feed that the rest of the crowds were seeing all along the racetracks.

“Greetings Racers….” The Commissioner said, decked in an immaculately crisp suit and standing in front of a very typical “important” style background. Blah..blah..blah time..

Nava grinned, as she saw the GPRL logo show up. The screen floated up a few more feet, and then, a large “4” appeared on it, instantly as the twin light pillars in front of the racers lit up red… The roar of the crowds was deafening. Nava however, was focused on the roar from her pod's engines, as they came to life, their happy thrum echoing throughout her body. She could not help but grin from ear to ear, as she gave an ear wiggle to the crowd. This was it. This is what all the other races led up to. She could barely contain herself.

“3” the screen changed, the red lights holding…
“2” came up, the red pillars still holding…

Nava leaned forward, pushing her engine throttle up slightly, as she prepared to jump.
“1” appeared, the pillars changing to a blaring yellow…

And then, in that ever heart racing second…

O” as the Green Lights shone, green flare style fireworks shooting up in the night sky...

Nava gave a wild whoop, as her pod shot forward. She enjoyed the feel of the engies, as they fired off into the night sky.

TAG: ALL!

...Meanwhile..
High above in the guest box...

"Look!...the race started."
Two small being watch the start of the race with interest, cheering as they watch the pods fly by.

Race Post #3

The race was fervent, perhaps a bit too fervent. It seemed like it had only just begun, yet he everything was swirling past him fast, gaining speed, twisting and turning in an eternal battle of vague colors and lights. He was gaining speed now and it was obvious. He was going to show his worth in this race, and of that he was sure.

He found himself at a small circle in the track, which proved to potentially be interesting. This race was getting off its feet and he needed every advantage he could get if he wanted some sort of lead.

Dai took the right, flying through, waiting until the reconnect to check up on how the others were doing. One part of this race was talent; the other part was knowing your enemy and actively combating them. And he was going to do both, and he would need to, should he attempt to win.

This was it, after all. Why not give it everything he had?

Dai made a mental note on Deimos Odai. The defel was proving himself to be the quality of racer that he had shown himself to be in the Fireball Alley. The skill there was obvious, and the pod was easily spottable to be customized. It was clear that his mechanic had some sort of idea of how Deimos raced; his style, and his personal preferences. That was dangerous, something he couldn't afford.

But the answer to a lot of these problems was simply to improvise, and that was something he was quite good at. If he wasn't, he wouldn't even be in this race.

IC: Deimos Odai/ First Big Turn
Race Post 2

Things were going fairly well in the early going. This was the longest race that Deimos had been a part of, four laps, so it didn't make that much sense to push himself or the pod at this point. Just take what he could get at this point and be in striking distance on the final lap. That was the goal now, just don't screwup.

Staying tucked in behind Dai, he pushed the other pod around the corner at a faster speed than they would normally have reached at this point. Thus far they had pulled away from the others, not seeing hide nor hair of them. That would change, and likely very quickly.

The sweeping turn proved to be very little of a problem for either of the pods, as they accelerated through it gaining momentum the entire time. That momementum translated into a higher speed and acceleration coming out of the corner as the energy that had been pushing them away had to go somewhere.

Deimos found himself practically relaxing, due to the mild nature of the first part of the lap. There just wasn't anything to be worried about, it was a completely straight shot, no obstacles to get in the way at prestent, and only a racer he knew would die before doing something dirty. it was a good time to be racing. Not necessarily the best part of the race to be a spectator though. But that would definitely change come the final lap.

Coming upon the first challenging section of the track Deimos didn't slow down, they weren't yet at a velocity that it was necessary. Taking the left and then right turns as fast as he could, he contemplated attempting a pass, but Dai quickly sped on beyond him.

That was when Deimos realized he'd forgotten a turn. Slamming the brakes far more than he wanted to, he watched as Dai pulled even farther way from him as they came out of the second hard left turn.

IC: Dai Konuma
Race Post #4

Dai knew that he was racing through the easy part of this. Nava and Deimos were catching up too easily. This wasn't acceptable, for he knew that a close race with the quality of Nava and Deimos's pods would be incredibly taxing. And second place...

Well, he didn't want second place, and he was going to fight to make sure that he didn't get it. The sound of whistling in the air caught up with him and he knew that the turn he was performing was a sharp one, despite its generally laid-back look.

His mind was wandering so much that it was hard for him to keep focus, yet at the same time, all his wandering thoughts were what made him keep focus. It was an odd symbiotic process that made little sense to him, and Dai figured that it wasn't something that he could lose. Anything that gave him any sort of advantage was still something that gave him an advantage, and he was going to take that well.

The sharp turn came up and Dai banked hard. He felt his pod screeching across the path, and he winced. This pod was dying, and he knew that this was going to be its last race. He had to give his pod a worthy goodbye, and this was the only way he knew to give it a worthy goodbye. It would be born in fire and it would die out in an inferno; breathing its last amongst the screams and cheers of the galaxy as they saw their hero shoot across the line for the golden cup, for one last time...

The daydream was attracting, sure, but it was still at this moment only that: a daydream. If he wanted to win, he would have to focus...focus...

This was proving to be harder mentally than it was physically. But, afterall, wasn't that the charm of Podracing?

Race Post #2

Nava pushed her throttle hard, as she saw Dai's ship leap out in front. Oh no WAY, was she going to let him catch the lead this early in the race. Amazingly, it was also a bit distracting, with all the lights flying past them, as they raced on the track, so Nava had to play extra attenttion, focusing only in front of her at the moment.

The other pods she could all but feel them, but Dai's was the one she was after. The lower curves at the bottom of the race had not been so bad, so far, but soon she would find herself approaching what looked like a small circle..she guessed a split in the track. But right now, she had to pay attention to the curves. A pod, she recognized, belonging to Deimos was also uncomfortably close by, and she needed to gain some distance on them, and soon.

These curves were easy to handle, and right now, she had to get past that second one, before she worried about the split ahead. After that, she could afford to throttle even more, and gain some ground, before the next serious turn came up.

Post 3

If there was a place that Deimost pod could catch up though, they were surely at it. Flooring it as much as he could, pushing into the overdrive that was available with most pods, he sped along faster than he normally would have pushed the engines at this point. Thank the machine god we went with more durability on the engines. They could probably take this for more than half the race without any real problems. And it wasn't like there was anything worth holding back for, it was the last race of the season after all.

The straight away quickly evaporated, and Deimos saw Dai take the right hand side. Refusing to follow at this part, it was just too dangerous (although you could argue that it was more dangerous to do things this way) he swung into the left hand side. Zipping through the left, short straight and right turns, he left knowing he'd have to make up a lot of time later.

Race Post #5

Dai was surprised; it felt as if only moments ago the race had started. The adrenaline pumped in his veins so much that he felt as if the transition between the race starting and the moment right now was almost non-existent. Yet it was undeniable, really. There, in front of him, was the lap marker. It would be lap two before far too long. It was out of four...could the season really be ending this fast?

He couldn't even savor the moment, for it felt almost surreal. So much planning had been put into this, so much wishing, waiting, hoping...all of it had been directed at this one moment that when it finally arrived it was almost as if it had just passed him by. Here he was, sitting in his pod, racing towards the goal of universal affection. Yet what had he left?

Not too long ago he had been in someone's house, cleaning with their droids for a few credits. It meant nothing to the usual people of the galaxy, but to him, it meant everything. They were credits, almost some sort of sacred, yet forbidden, god. He never quite knew what to do with them, yet before long he would find himself without money before too long. Temptation has its ways of working its strongest when one is weakest.

But here he was now, Dai Konuma, the famous rival of Nava Kree, one of the greatest podracers in history, racing for the first place cup for the second season, to be added to the rank that Corbin Antilles held. He would be spoken in the same breath as that classic great of the first season, and he couldn't anticipate it enough. It was, after all...the championship.

No, it was more than that. It was him, incarnated into one small object, and here he could think of nothing more but being awarded the golden cup. He could use his winnings and track down Rethen...

Rethen...was he watching?
