The trip could have been better, what with all the insanity that Jules had caused with her preperations. Seriously, how many ways are there to calibrate a tachometer? It had been almost obsessive, really. But it was all said and done with, finally. And there hadn't been any problems getting setup for some practice runs. Now all there was, was the waiting. And more waiting... and getting nervous cause it was the last race of the season. The Defel found himself absently wondering who all was going to show for this race... obviously Dai would, and Nava. They'd been the staples that'd kept things going all year. Would the new racer, Orun show? It wasn't seeming terribly likely. And there there was Kaida... She'd disappeared long before he had, but somehow had scrapped up enough points to be invited. She could very easily be trouble. At this point it was anyones race, as they'd all proven that they could take home the gold. However, it was gonna depend on whether or not Nava could be taken down. Maybe Kaida would be intersted in working together again? Time would tell, either way. And there wasn't much time left... Deimos got up and headed towards the track. No way was he going to be late for this race. Jules would skin him a live quite literally that were to happen. I just have to stay relaxed... otherwise I won't stand a snowballs chance on Tatooine.
It was the start of the finish. The finish to the season. The possible finish to Deimos career as a racer, as no one knew what the league was going to be doing about next year. In short, it was a time to live life to the fullest, and take no prisoners on the track. Easier said than done, given the competition in this race. Sitting in his pod out on the track, he looked around. There were four of them. The main four from the season, two from the early going and then the two that had taken their places. Absently Deimos listened to the pre-race doodads. He'd never really been much for speechs, they just took up time. And they seldom were entertaining. But they were part of the formula, the way that things were. It wasn't likely that would ever go away, as politics and bureacracy always had to have their fingers in all of the pies available. Then the lights came on. The first red light set it's solid tones before him. Making sure that all of the thrusters were firing, and everything was ready to go he sat tensed like the feral beast his ancestors had once been. The second one took it's place, gleaming it's equally bright color. Starting to rev up the engines, it was about that time... Yellow glared at him, cautionary sunlight beckoning him to take off. Just a few more seconds... Then the green light blazed its unnatural hue and they were off. The roar of the pods bouncing off of the buildings of the gleaming night skies. There weren't too many nasty turns on this track, the machine gods be praised for that. The only truely evil spot was on the other side of the track, this was going to be about straight speed. And Deimos pod had been designed to push harder in that department than most of the other pods. Glancing around, he saw Dai nearby and waved at him. It wouldn't be seen, but somehow he felt the other might know that he was saying hi. Tucking in behind the human he decided that drafting would be the way to go as they powered through the early turns, shifting gears to higher ends of speed.
Things were going fairly well in the early going. This was the longest race that Deimos had been a part of, four laps, so it didn't make that much sense to push himself or the pod at this point. Just take what he could get at this point and be in striking distance on the final lap. That was the goal now, just don't screwup. Staying tucked in behind Dai, he pushed the other pod around the corner at a faster speed than they would normally have reached at this point. Thus far they had pulled away from the others, not seeing hide nor hair of them. That would change, and likely very quickly. The sweeping turn proved to be very little of a problem for either of the pods, as they accelerated through it gaining momentum the entire time. That momementum translated into a higher speed and acceleration coming out of the corner as the energy that had been pushing them away had to go somewhere. Deimos found himself practically relaxing, due to the mild nature of the first part of the lap. There just wasn't anything to be worried about, it was a completely straight shot, no obstacles to get in the way at prestent, and only a racer he knew would die before doing something dirty. it was a good time to be racing. Not necessarily the best part of the race to be a spectator though. But that would definitely change come the final lap. Coming upon the first challenging section of the track Deimos didn't slow down, they weren't yet at a velocity that it was necessary. Taking the left and then right turns as fast as he could, he contemplated attempting a pass, but Dai quickly sped on beyond him. That was when Deimos realized he'd forgotten a turn. Slamming the brakes far more than he wanted to, he watched as Dai pulled even farther way from him as they came out of the second hard left turn.
If there was a place that Deimost pod could catch up though, they were surely at it. Flooring it as much as he could, pushing into the overdrive that was available with most pods, he sped along faster than he normally would have pushed the engines at this point. Thank the machine god we went with more durability on the engines. They could probably take this for more than half the race without any real problems. And it wasn't like there was anything worth holding back for, it was the last race of the season after all. The straight away quickly evaporated, and Deimos saw Dai take the right hand side. Refusing to follow at this part, it was just too dangerous (although you could argue that it was more dangerous to do things this way) he swung into the left hand side. Zipping through the left, short straight and right turns, he left knowing he'd have to make up a lot of time later.
