Kraid Tynne

Kraid looked back and forth between S2 and Rylee. He kept forgetting how young the kid was; he sure didn't act like it when it came to technical stuff. But still young. Very young. Young enough to kill? Kraid had heard of kids around his age doing that, but usually not because they chose so themselves. He suddenly became very uneasy about his role in ordering this young boy to kill.

And Kraid remembered that Azul sure was a pistol. Would she want her little bro killing?

"Uh, yeah... actually, Rylee, I need you here on the bridge. S2, you can shoot, right? How about you gather up Wyl, give him a quick brief, and you two man the turrets? Maybe put him on the top turret, so you're doing most of the shooting while we do the landing. Don't want to stress out Wyl too much on the first time."

S2 bowed politely before making his way to the lift tube. “I will go get Mr. Lorrka acclimated to the controls right away, Mr. Kraid.”

Just as the droid had just about made his way to the left lift tube, the doors of the one on the right hissed open, revealing Captain Boran as he strode onto the bridge. “All’s good to go with Wyl down below, Kraid. Let’s get this baby in the air.”

Taking the pilot’s seat, Jav’s hands moved quickly across the control panel as he began the prep work, motioning Kraid over to help get through any pre-flight checks and the Fool’s Gamble into the air.

The evergreen Multipurpose Utility Droid ambled slowly down the corridor into the cargo bay where he found Wyl Lorrka nearly where the Captain have left him. Making his way over, the droid bowed as he stood before the young man. “Mr. Kraid asked me to help get you acclimated to controls of the turret pods before we arrive.”

"Right." Kraid jumped into the copilot's seat. He'd been turning on systems gradually, so he hit the last few switches and started the engines. They rumbled to life as Kraid kept his eyes on their energy levels. The ship's mission computers madly conducted startup tests, and looking at the caution screen, Kraid was happy to see that it was blank. One last thing... He put on his headset and immediately got clearance from Mos Eisley departure. The engines were now up to speed on full idle.

He gave a thumbs up. "All systems' go, cleared for departure, Cap'n. Take her up!"

Working busily at the controls, the Captain smiled to himself when Kraid said they were ready to go and slowly pulled the Gamble into the air, retracting the landing gears as he did. As they lifted off over Docking Bay 91, Jav set their course on navcomputer for Arnthout before reaching for the comm. “Attention all passengers, this is your Captain speaking. We are now departing Mos Eisley Spaceport enroute for our destination, the settlement of Arnthout. Our ETA will be 15 minutes. Be prepared for this people. We might not get a second chance.”

From a shadey lookout point, a pair of electrobinoculars peered out and watched as the Fool’s Gamble rocketed off towards Arnthout before reaching his own mobile comm. unit. “Yeah, this is 01. The Urusai has left the nest. Repeat, the Urusai has the left the nest. Move out.”

“Attention all passengers, this is your Captain speaking. We are now departing Mos Eisley Spaceport enroute for our destination, the settlement of Arnthout. Our ETA will be 15 minutes. Be prepared for this people. We might not get a second chance.”

Millik had just put his flask away when the announcement came, and the ex-Jedi tilted his head up to where he heard the message through the comm. The announcement only just reminded him of his situation and it brought a tinge of resentment at said situation. He hoped that this mission was as easy as these people were making it out to be.

Arnthout is a small area, Millik reminded himself, not having needed to see the images that had been sent out through the viewscreens of the ship. He had heard of it and other settlements - some which no longer exist cause of the war - and knew that it was nowhere near the size of Mos Eisley. And with the Tuskens roaming about there, whatever population Arnthout had would probably be much smaller when they arrived.

Maybe luck will actually be with me and everyone in Arnthout will be dead, Millik thought to himself He could only hope though; his luck sure as hell kept getting worse and worse. Leaning back in his seat, Millik figured that he might as well relax during those fifteen minutes as he placed his feet up on another nearby empty seat and allowed his eyes to close.

Bridge- Fool’s Gamble

Glancing at the chronometer on his wrist, they still were about ten minutes out from Arnthout. The Captain looked up and out the viewport and the blue Tatooine skies before them. They were a good distance off the ground, but still low enough that they could hopefully get down, deposit their people and lift back off before the Tuskens could really start bringing the fight to them. He lowered his gaze briefly and surveyed the bridge and all within, each attentive at the stations at which they sat, when a rapid beeping began to emit from the comm. system. Jav reached over and began receiving the incoming signal when a voice called out over the bridge through a sea of static.

“…ain Boran. Come in, Captain Boran…”

“This is Jav Boran,” the Duros answered as he reached to the closest access to the comm. system. “Go ahead.”

The voice that came back over the system was deep, gruff, and weathered with age. “Captain, this is Chief D’Vorkk with the Mos Eisley Police Department. We picked up the departure of your ship shortly ago from Mos Eisley and wanted to touch base with you.”

Oh, what now?” Jav thought to himself before speaking up again. “Alright then, Chief. What can I do for you.”

“The Governor has briefed me on your mission to Arnthout and I wanted to cover our role in the operation with you before you arrive.”

“Your…role?”

“Yes. The Governor felt that, even with your mercenary crew that one ship might not be enough to battle the Tuskens and protect our personell so she asked that we send a detachment of our men to help aid in the operation. If you check your sensors, you should be able to pick up three police shuttles not far behind your ship. What we would like you to do is to head into the city first and scout out the situation before reporting back to us. Our shuttles will land about a kilometer east of Arnthout but as soon as we receive word, will move in to assist.”

Jav glanced over to Kraid, motioning towards the sensor console. The Kuati engineer nodded in reply and scanned the immediate area. As the Chief had said, there were three police shuttles several minutes behind them but approaching fast.

“I copy, Chief D’Vorkk, we’re coming up on Arnthout in about eight minutes. As soon as we receive a clear picture of the situation, we’ll contact your men.”

“Good. D’Vorkk out.”

So, perhaps fate was looking out for them after all. At the very least, they weren’t going into this alone anymore. They might just make it out of this yet.

He wacthed her as she began to prepare the food. She had really spraked his intrest in her. There was just something about her, and it wasn't just her stunning features. The Corellian was surprised by his attraction. Maybe something more would come with time, maybe not.

Just before Jasen was going to speak to her, the Duros captian made an annoucemnet that they would be leaving and heading to their desistation.

"Well, I guess we'd better hold off on the meal for a while, sweet heart. We better go find the captian since we'll be tocuhing down soon." Jasen said.

"Uh...yeah," he said to the droid, "I guess we should head up there, huh?"

The droid followed Wyl down the hallway, past the Captain's quarters. Wyl felt the floow lurch beneath his feet as the ship took off for Arnhout. He continued on up the ladder tubes and reached the top level of the ship, and from there it was just a short walk to the turret station, S2 clanking along behind him.

He sank into the chair with reverence and did not yet dare touch the controls. He'd seen turret pods, before, of course, reporting for the war, but he'd never fired one.

"Okay, Esstoo," he said, "what do I do?"

Bridge- Fool’s Gamble

The Captain let out a near inaudible sigh. While what Kraid said could very well be true, pessimism was one thing they didn’t need right now.

“Well, we can only hope, for our sakes and the sake of those in Arnthout, they’re telling the truth. I don’t really see the need for the ruse of sending out ships just to sit there if they plan to do nothing, though… unless they’re watching us to make sure we don’t try to leave the planet.” The Captain shook the thought from his head. Now HE was starting to get pessimistic. “Anyway, we’ll be coming up on Arnthout in six minutes. Once my team and I leave the ship, the ship is under your command, my friend, and feel free to let anyone aboard know that fact if they try to give you trouble, so make use of anyone still aboard to keep her flying and keep your ear out for my signal.”

Upper Gunnery Pod- Fool’s Gamble

Leaning over Wyl’s shoulder, S2 began to systematically point out the general controls of the gunnery pod, the targeting computer, the firing mechanisms, and the comm. headsets to communicate with the other pod and the bridge.

“Your biggest challenge won’t be the operation of the dual-cannons,” the Utility Droid said, sounding very much like a computer tutorial, “but trying to shoot at your target while we’re moving. Thankfully, you might not have to do much shooting from up here since the ground will be out of your line of sight most of the time, but when a target does come into view I have heard it said that shooting ahead of where you intend to hit is good rule of thumb. Unless you have superb reflexes, your target could be out of sight by the time you get to firing if you’re lining you aim up directly at it. Now, do you have any questions, Mr. Lorrka?”

"Uh...no, not right now, now...just point and pull the trigger, lead the target...should I be worried about overheating? Power cells? I guess not, right? Who's manning the other gun?" Wyl asked all this while placing his hands on the controls, gently and slowly swinging the chair left to right, up and down, testing to see whether or not he'd be able to shoot the ship's hull. "Smooth as an aiwha's back," he said.

A miscalculated swivel made the chair swing almost upside down. Wyl yelped, and returned it to it's rest position. He chuckled with a mirth that didn't reach his eyes.

Upper Gunnery Pod- Fool’s Gamble

“As long as he systems are working well or you don’t keep firing for several minutes straight without stopping, there should be no worries of overheating, and since the cannons are tied into the ship’s power systems, no need to replace power cells. As to the other pod, it was requested that I take the lower seat. I’ve never actually operated them before, but I don’t foresee any particular difficulties. If there is nothing else, then, I’ll leave you to get accustomed to the controls while I head to the lower pod. Please put on your headset so that once I’m down there we can test our pod comms.”

As he turned to head away, S2 caught a glimpse of the human nearly swiveling upside down in his seat before quickly correcting himself. “Please be careful, Mr. Lorrka. The seats can be particularly sensitive at time.”

Exiting the turret pod, he reached the ladder heading down before retrieving his own handheld commlink. “Captain, I’ve shown Mr. Lorrka to the upper pod and educated him on the firing systems and am about to head down to the lower pod myself. Is there anything that you need before I go down below?”

“No, I think we’re good, S2. Good luck down there.”

“Thank you, Captain,” the droid replied, reattaching the comm. before climbing down the ladder.

"Roger. Once we touch down and drop you off, I'm gonna circle around and do a couple of strafing runs if necessary. If it's bad I'll take a high orbit and do some sharp dives at targets. Embarrassed by a droid. Pull yourself together, Wyl. Wyl went over the systems, again, familiarizing himself with the controls, seeing what he could reach easily and what would be harder. Finally, he sat back and watched the Tatooine sky whizz by, two suns low on the horizon.

Finally, he slid down the ladder and made his way to the Captain's quarters, where he filled his flask. He'd need that, and the captain had offered it, so...

Turning on his heels, he hurried back to the turret. He took a seat, and a swig.
