RE: State of the Role Playing Forum Thread

I think that the Forum is run very well. There is just a few things I want to bring up. and they may have been brought to the attention of the MODs already.
I think that, to cut back on any and all clutter for the thread that if you have a game idea, a MOD should ahve to approve it and/or help with the GM to get the game up to snuff.
I've seena lot of gmaes that, in my opinion, never should have been allowed beyond the post screen becasue the idea wasn't very well thought out, or there was too little to go with or the grammatical errors were horrid.
Now I'm no grammar Nazi, but if your gonna make a game then the thread title should atleast be spelled right and have proper grammar.
And I'm not perfect, I make plenty of mistakes. But to be a GM you should really be a little more diligent on such things.
Another thing is that I've seen people who like to post with alot of MArkup codes, and then the psots have to be broken up casue the boards seem to disagree with so much code being used. Is there anyway to extend how much code can be used. Or atleast give us a guideline that shows how much code a post can actually handle?
And one last item, Is there anyway to find an application that can go with the boards that allows people to download an entire game thread into a PDF?
I know I've wanted to read several game threads that existed at one time, but I can't sit here for hours online to load it due to using dialup. And its I use tabs in Mozilla it creates too much on the desktop for me to be able to do anything else but have those threads open and read them so i can them move onto a project I need to finish.
Those are just some of my questions and things on my mind. Hope you can give a decent answer to them.

A lot of that stuff is tech stuff that we have little to no control over. Yes, there are definitely problems with our board system but even our tech admin can only do so much...we basically have to rely on IGN to make major changes, and they don't really seem to be very responsive. The markup thing is a good example- sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Annoying, I know, but even *I* haven't yet figured out what the secret key is.
The PDF idea is cool but I don't know if that's even possible. Maybe someone more tech inclined can speak to that. Good idea though, I like it.

RE: State of the Role Playing Forum Thread

I used to have a ton of fun here, back in the glory days of BoP and IBoP for example. But DRL has gotten in my way so I can't take the time to play much. I've tried joining a few games that really caught my attention, but those died out fast because of lack of committment on the part of either the other players or the GM him/herself. At this point, I've only been participating in one game that is going very slow, but with the pace, I can take the time to deal with life and not get left behind in the game.
The main problem that I see with the boards, as others have mentioned, is the users themselves. It drives me nuts when a GM can't spell. Some typos, I don't mind. I make them too. But when the entire first post needs to have a translator to make any sence of, it really turns me off. If someone starts a game, they need to be able to keep it going and keep it interesting. If a person is joining a game, they need to be able to keep going in it and do quality posts.
I don't have much more time right now to post, but I know this place would be more fun for me if we did have a community event like some mentioned. I would love to have a costume party where the users are in it as a character currently being played, but being in a fun relaxed mode, not as another place to get the characters they're going after in the game.
There are more things I want to say, but I've got to get going. Too much to do in RL between moving, July 4th, and getting ready for my baby to be born within the next month or so.

Kids sure grow fast. My first baby turns 7 in April. My second one turns 4 in May. And my new baby girl has her first birthday in August. How do they get so big so fast?

RE: State of the Role Playing Forum Thread

I have one point to bring up today. I have been browsing through the first two pages of the SWRPF, and the NSWRPF. Durning said browsing I noticed that there are lots, and lots, of locked threads. The reasons that I have seen most often are: (1) Lack of player involvment/interest. (2) NP had to lock the thread because it was sub-par, or the GM left and other reasons.
So, after thinking about this for a few minutes the thought came to my head: "Is NP approving RP's prior to their creation?" Now, I think that to avail the RPF's of the problem (It really has gotten harder over the last few weeks to sort through the locked/junk threads.) Now I know that NP is only human, so this may have been tried while I was away and I just dont know about it, but I think that it would be a good idea to have people submit their OP's to NP. IMO that might help alittle with the locked thread thing. I know that it was done for a while
(If you can understand half of what I posted, you are brilliant.)

Well, back when it was just the SWRPF, GMs had to send NP NSW OPs (abbreviation overload) for approval, and she rarely gave that out. Now that the NSWRPF's been released, that's all over.
Also, I doubt she'd like her inbox being overloaded with OPs and have to read through streams of them. Though, I'm not favorable of the abundance of locked threads either. Maybe they could be sent to, like, a Forum Graveyard or something.
Yeah! A TFN Graveyard! Where all locked threads go! I. Am. A. Genius.

Hey, I said we can post our feeling on the board.
I love the RPF, the only thing is, it feels to me like abig group. And it's intimidating to newbies and less experienced players like myself. I feel almost like and outsider, it's kinda hard to get in involved and make myself familiar with the entirety of the forum. I'm not sure if anybody else feels that way. But's it's just my feelings

I agree Reynar! A grave yard for threads, but alas, could the JC server handle all the locked threads being in one place? Wouldnt that result in a universe-wide meltdown or something?
Any way, I think that due to the size of the player base in all the RPF's (after thinking about what I had posted earlier) that it would be a monster of a job for NP. We would'nt want our beloved Modness to have a mental breakdown due to the overwhelming number of OPs.
I just will have to twitch alittle every time I see the locked threads.

I would die if I got any more PMs than I already do.
Many of the threads are locked because GMs ask me to lock them so they can start another RPG. Others just dropped a few pages and got hit by the auto-lock. I dunno, I never really thought about locked threads being "bad," per se-- to me, it's just an organizational thing. Locked threads make the active and useful threads more obvious, and get the old/junky stuff out of the way. But I can see how other people might look at it differently. Very interesting! Something to think about, I guess.

I have to say I don't mind locked threads. There's only a handful of them on the first page anyway.
If you want to see locked threads, go check out the Resource. I really think we could stand to see more activity over there - about half the threads on page one are locked. The worst part is that most are autolocked.

I voted no complaints at all. However I do have to agree with DarthCemeroX, it is kind of intimidating to be a n00b when all of these people have been doing this for years. It's like being transfered to a new school where you don't know anybody.

I don't see the problem with fitting in; I just slid into the lunch line, I guess.
My only major complaint is sub-par posting. It makes those who actually try to post in quality feel like they did it all for nothing. It's funny that the Writing Forums rarely have this problem, but the SWRPF has it all the time.
I also agree with the lack of good RPs. (I was lucky enough to jump in the Podracer II RP before the last league race and the Championship Race... Sadly I only posted two Race Posts due to my rare, but hurtful, extreme procrastination.) Luckily it seems as if Saintheart has come to the rescue there with Galactic Trader: Golden Rule. Glad I jumped on board there. But the problem still remains.
I beleive something of the sort's been mentioned, but not in detail. This would be the Multi-thread RP. Like a text-based form of Star Wars Galaxies. Except there's a set Galaxy Map (A good one would be the one used for my Fleet Commander: Rise of the Empire RP... Of which was the edited version of the Galaxy Map by someone under the userame of E.S.P. on... Er, I forget now... Yes, I fell for SuperShadow's deceptions, 'till I looked him up on Wookiepedia. ) for the sake of some our sanity, that way we know exactly how far different places are from each other and such. That way it doesn't take longer to get from Tatooine to Coruscant than it takes to get from Corellia to Coruscant and such inconsitancies. The reason for seperate threads is for different 'sets' of characters, but they can still interact with the others by PM Notice, or something of the like, and the fact it would likely have many people wanting to play, hence to 'community' feel. For example, one 'set' for the Politicians and Nobility, one for Traders, Smugglers, and Pirates, another for War-involved Soldiers and Force-Users, another for Non-War-involved Soldiers and Force-Users (At least those that which don't fit in another category, such as Politicians, ex. Palpatine.), another for Engineers, Industrial Workers, Civilian Pilots, and Regular Civilians, another for Non-Civilian Pilots, Starship Crewmembers, and Bounty Hunters, and so on. Sure, it'd take up some server space, but wouldn't it be worth it?
