RE: Casino Royale
IC: Ruana Trebond
Ruana's face sank into a stunned expression as Halon stated the things he wanted to bring onto the ship. Was this guy
nuts
? She began to swear very very quietly through gritted teeth. She sent a silent message on her datapad to Markus, recording and including some of what Halon was saying. 'You'd better get down here, Markus,' the message ran. Ruana found herself even more horrified as Halon was actually offered the kinds of things he wanted.
Finally, she stepped up and glared at him. "Were you by any chance
asleep
during that last meeting? Or did you somehow miss the comments about the need for subtlety? Let me spell it out for you. Expensive ship. Rich people. Rich people panic if they see weapons. Tight security. Are you with me so far? If any one of us pulls a weapon, That. Is. The End. Of. Our. Secrecy. We're going to need things that don't actually look like weapons. If anything."
She allowed a jibing note to seep into her voice, aristocratic tones well-equipped for this kind of sarcasm. "Oh, and none of us whatsoever could
possibly
fight without weapons, and we all lack the confidence for unarmed fighting.
Nooo
...
much
better to charge in and shoot everything." Ruana's voice became icy, as she directed a gaze at Halon that tended to freeze people where they stood. "We are
trying
for subtlety. Secrecy. We are trying not to randomly kill things. We are
investigating
, not
demolishing
, chaos take it!" She stared at him. He might hate her for this, but she really didn't care. She wasn't going to let some hotshot with an itchy trigger finger ruin the entire mission. He might be quite content to come up with that kind of insane idea, but Ruana had a daughter to return for.

RE: Casino Royale
IC: Boz
Boz looked over the various weapons.
"I like the pistols, but like you said Quartermaster, if we get caught it would be very hard to explain. The last thing we'd need on this mission is to end up in a brig, we can't protect people from inside a cell. I think we take them, but only use them if it is nessicery."
He leaned forward, examining the dart shooter. The lack of ammunition for it would be an issue, but if they could find some way to smuggle in more, it would help.
"The main problem is that we don't know what we'll be up against on the cruise, we know so little so we don't know what weaponry we'll need, but I'd rather be prepared for a variety of situations. But I do have an idea about the ammunition. Halon, your cover is as a bodyguard and I think that it wouldn't be unheard of for a bodyguard to carry stun batons as a nonlethel means of protecting their client, especially if they were registered at boarding. What I am wondering is whether would it be possible to conceal extra ammunition within a stun baton and have the stun baton still be functional? If that was possible, then we would have the benefit of the stun batons and the extra ammunition close at hand if and situation escalated beyond basic nonlethel disarment."
Boz looked around at the other agents. He was really starting to feel right in a leadership role. He smiled slightly and turned back to the head of Q'u branch.
"What would be best Quartermaster?"

IC: Halon,
Q'u Branch
Halon leaned in a little closer to better study the contents of the case. He'd been very pleased with what Q'u had told him when Ruana suddenly whirled on him.
"Were you by any chance asleep during that last meeting? Or did you somehow miss the comments about the need for subtlety?"
Gods, not again.
Halon tilted his head to look at her. She seemed unusually agitated. Which didn't bode very well for how some of the others would feel. That might complicate things.
Irrelevant.
Halon knew his first duty was always to the mission. Keeping his ears tuned in to what Ruana said, he turned back to Q'u's weapons case.
"Let me spell it out for you. Expensive ship. Rich people."
The hold-out blasters held no appeal to him; they were worse than useless in a firefight, never mind the fact that there were much easier and economical ways to eliminate a target.
"Rich people panic if they see weapons. Tight security. Are you with me so far? If any one of us pulls a weapon, That. Is. The End. Of. Our. Secrecy. We're going to need things that don't actually look like weapons. If anything."
People may still panic before this all over, Halon thought to himself. He just hoped it would not be at the sight of the
opposition's
weaponry. He stifled his annoyance with the woman and went back to his examination.
He glance shifted to the pistols. He had discounted the dart-shooter almost immediately. While it had its advantages--versatility, stealth--it lacked firepower.
Which now left just the blaster against the slugthrower. Halon didn't like slugthrowers very much (recoil!), but for the apocalyptic scenarios he was envisioning he was willing to trade the blaster's stopping power for every extra shot he could get.
The slugthrower it was.
His decision made, he straightened up again and waited until Ruana's wrath had at last expended itself.
"We are trying for subtlety. Secrecy. We are trying not to randomly kill things. We are investigating, not demolishing, chaos take it!"
Then Boz'rir intervened, seeking some middle ground. Halon was impressed; maybe the human was ready too lead them after all. He didn't know if the Starlight Cruise Line would allow even a bodyguard any sort of weapon, but it was at least worth an inquiry. As he talked with Q'u, Halon turned back to Ruana.
"He is right, of course. You may be setting out to investigate, but what exactly will you do when you find what you are looking for?"
Or when it finds you, such as the case may be...
"But you may rest assured, Ruana. If I have to use these weapons..." he waved a hand back over the open weapons case, "The killing I do will be anything but
random
."

IC as
Joss Vendu
Vendu recoiled as Ruana assaulted Halon with a venomous chorus of reprisal about his choice in more obvious weaponry, and like the city walls of ancient siege, the Ubese simply weathered the storm preoccupying himself with careful selection of a slugthrower. It was almost as if he'd barely heard her.
So that's what that looks like
, he mused quietly. Joss had the strange feeling of finally looking in through the outside of something like one of their more colorful discussions from the past. But he could understand her fears of not getting back to their daughter. He had them too.
It was Boz'rir's interjection that would hopefully be the compromise in all of this and Joss had his own as Halon finished with,
"The killing I do will be anything but random."
.
"Yes, Halon, that's exactly what I would be doing myself, but taking that big of a chance before we can gather any facts at all is too high. However, I think I may have a solution to this quandary."
Joss looked next to the Quartermaster, "Perhaps we could have the three components of the 'thrower disguised as very common items. Like the barrel as one of Ruana's lipstick cylinders, the chamber and handle as my electric shaver, and the ammunition could be stowed inside a child's rattling toy that surely a couple like us," he glanced back at Ruana and kept a straight face hoping she'd do the same, "could simply say got mixed in with our luggage by boisterous children."
Instead of waiting for a reply he continued on talking next to Ruana and Boz'rir, "And the only time the weapon could be assembled and rendered functional would be a protocol change from our Leader only."
"Initially, we'd enter the ship with a Subtle Protocol that centers around siphoning the security and gathering information at only which disguised non lethals can be used in the most extreme situations. And when the situation warrants it by Boz'rir, he can initialize the use of lethal measures."
"That way, we aren't out there under prepared
OR
'jumping the gun' so to speak. What does everyone think of that?"

Markus Carfax
Conference Room
Markus watched Boz'rir's outburst with some amusement. As someone who made a hobby out of needling people until they exploded, he'd borne witness to some pretty spectacular bouts of anger and frustration. He'd have to say that Girange had earned himself about a 3.5 on the Carfax Scale of Annoyance.
The hacker was brought back to the real world by Stent.
"Are you still willing to do some research on Mr. Aves Harth, or should I pursue that?"
"Nah, I'll handle it, mate." Markus replied, getting up from the table. "Seems to me like you need to adjust your cover story in line with what we've discussed here."
He left Solass and Kannat in the conference room and started walking to Q'u branch, hoping to unload the work of the background search onto one of the dedicated techs there. On the way he recieved a message from Ruana.
You need to get down here, Markus.
Carfax quickened his pace and arrived at the branch offices just in time to hear the end of Joss's suggestion.
"Feth, are we still talking about weapons?" he interjected from the back of the group. "I thought you lot were supposed to be elite secret spy agents. If we do our job right, and frankly right now that possibility looks
extremely
slim, we won't even need weapons at all."
He regarded Halon coldly.
"For once, Vendu has the right idea. If you must take your precious blasters on board, you'd better make damn well sure they're hidden."

The sound of Markus' voice from behind him caused Halon's hackles to rise. Why no one had succeeded in killing the slicer yet was far beyond his comprehension. He seemed to make enemies like other people breathed.
"For once, Vendu has the right idea. If you must take your precious blasters on board, you'd better make damn well sure they're hidden."
He returned the human's glare through his dark-tinted visor as he spoke up. "Joss, your proposal is acceptable. And you have my word, Boz'rir. As for you,
convict
, you would do well to keep your mouth shut where you have no issue. For all any of us know, a small army of Mandalorian mercenaries could be preparing to hold the
Empress
hostage for a king's ransom. Or
worse
. Q'u says we can defeat their security and I mean to. So unless you have access to some privileged information you would like to share with us, the weapon is going."

"For once, Vendu has the right idea. If you must take your precious blasters on board, you'd better make damn well sure they're hidden."
Joss immediately retorted, "And I think I'm on to another good one, Carfax. Be sure to ask me later about your operative role in my Human Shield Plan if shooting starts."
He didn't bother waiting for a reply of any kind from the Hacker. For surely there would be one.
"Quartermaster, I really would appreciate some kind of disguised knockout gas emitter along the lines of those cigarras you gave me earlier if at all possible. In contrast the bulk of what we carry aboard the
Empress
should be, by my opinion, surveillance gear."
"Because this is primarily an investigation and I realize that listening through walls will be next to impossible in any case, what do you have in the concealable line of sight visual and listening department?"

Markus Carfax
Q'u Labs
In a startling departure from their usual modus operandi (and by startling of course, Markus meant not suprising at all) the resident gun nuts of MI5 were resorting to insults and threats. Really. After so many years in service with him even Vendu couldn't muster up anything more creative than a vague Human Shield threat.
"Crikey, Vendu, with tactics like that it's a wonder MI5 haven't made you something more senior yet." he deadpanned. "Family man like you and all. Incidentally, when are you planning on telling little Alisa exactly what Daddy does for a living? Or are you gonna leave the torture out of the bedtime stories?"
It was an extremely low blow, even for Markus, but frankly he didn't care. His only small worry was that going after Alisa would mean that Ruana was going to hate his guts as well, and she was just about warming to his particular brand of charm. Oh well, a loss was a loss.
"And Halon," he added, as an afterthought, "The only privileged information I want to share with you right now is that fact that you're an insufferable gun nut who seems to have confused 'espionage skills' with 'the ability to pull a trigger'. Of course, that information ain't exactly classified."

Joss's facial features revealed nothing but passive hearing of what Markus had said, but his tightly clenched fists said more about how close Carfax's words had landed home than he would have liked. Normally, he would have launched into an immediate throttling of scrawny hacker like he had a couple of missions ago when he'd punched him in the nose. Now, the truth of Markus's observation stilled a violent response into quiet embarrassment. Joss still had a lot to answer for, mostly to the young one he was now responsible.
He held up a hand to quiet any response from Halon or any one else speaking quietly, "Just a joke, Markus." Joss couldn't look him in the eye at that point. "But nevertheless, duly noted."
"Let's get on with it, shall we?" he meekly asked the Quartermaster. "Concealable line of sight surveillance devices. What do you got?"

IC: Boz
Boz calmly breathed in then out, was this how this team always operated? He'd come to this team full of expectations of learning from the best. It didn't seem to be turning out that way.
"Gentlemen, and lady, could we please come to a decision on something that doesn't spiral into name calling and personal insults?"
He locked his hands behind his head, letting out another breath and attempting to gather his thoughts.
"Alright. I think that not knowing what we could end up encountering on this mission is something of a hinderance. It could be one spice smuggler, could be a crime ring, could even be nothing. Now, the blasters are very risky as we have discussed. I think that Agent Vendu's idea of my giving approval for when blasters can be assembled will be best. That way we might only be assembling and using the blasters in situations where we are up against others with blasters. It will all be about the severity of the situation and matching our approach suitably. Hand to hand and non lethel weapons, such as the stun batons is possible, for low level confrontations. Darts and such for medium level threats and, although I hope it won't come to it, I'll give the call to assemble the blasters for full on hostile threats."
He let his hands drop.
"But we are after all working in espionage. We need to be able to scan rooms for bugs, can't be too careful, and surveilence equipment if possible. But it all comes down to what you can make concealable Quartermaster."

IC: Ruana Trebond
Ruana looked disgusted. Obviously, Halon just wanted the chance to kill people, despite the fact that the rumours might turn out to be nothing. Still, she managed with difficulty to keep from replying. It would be pointless to extend the argument. For one thing, the Ubese wasn't the type to be swayed by, oh...logic, intelligent thought, rationality, or anything resembling those.
"Crikey, Vendu, with tactics like that it's a wonder MI5 haven't made you something more senior yet. Family man like you and all. Incidentally, when are you planning on telling little Alisa exactly what Daddy does for a living? Or are you gonna leave the torture out of the bedtime stories?"
She turned an incredulous stare Markus' way, utterly shocked that he would be so low as to bring Alisa into an argument, just for the sake of scoring a shot. It was filthy tactics, even from him. Her hands were shaking. She pressed them against her sides to still them, eyes narrowed as she directed a glare at Markus that looked like it would burn through duracrete. No more than the glare, however. She had, with great effort, learned to control herself better than she used to.
"And Halon, the only privileged information I want to share with you right now is that fact that you're an insufferable gun nut who seems to have confused 'espionage skills' with 'the ability to pull a trigger'. Of course, that information ain't exactly classified."
That took the tension away. Ruana gave a reluctant smile. Carfax, apparently, agreed with her about Halon.

Stent mulled over Agent Carfax's suggestion about changing his alias to fit the new story. The problem that Stent faced was that he simply could not think of anything new other than what he was originally: An elder advisor for a young upstart. He did not know young nobles per say, but there had to be bounds of elites that had children that would buy into such a thing. Perhaps that is what he should focus on.
Clearing out of his fog of thought, Stent looked over to Agent Solass and smiled. "Have you worked with such a disjointed group before?"

IC: Halon,
Q'u Branch
Halon had instinctively drawn back a few paces back at Carfax's mention of Joss and Ruana's child.
If there was one constant observed nearly everywhere in this vast galaxy, it was the following:
one simply does not trifle with another being's young.
Not if you were sane, anyway. But when no assault materialized (despite the fact that both parents had been left visually shaken by the remark) Halon was forced to admit to himself that he was somewhat disappointed. Markus Carfax with a broken jaw might be just what the mission needed right now.
Compounding things was the fact that their latest little flare up had played out in front of the entire branch for all to see.
Off to our usual excellent start, I suppose.
Seeking to avoid further exasperation, he turned back to Q'u.
"When can I come for the equipment, sir?"
With all the ignorance on display here, it had been easy for Halon to forget forget that this had actually been a successful tech run. Q'u, predictably, had most of what they'd needed. And the sooner they could acquire these items, the sooner Halon could leave this toxic atmosphere beyond.

RE: Casino Royale
"When can I come for the equipment, sir?"
The quartermaster looked at him.
"As soon as you all stop acting like children. Honestly agents, grow up."
He sighed.
"And use your heads. The
Empress
is two kilometers long, making it the largest ship in the Republic outside of the Kuat sectorial defense fleet. Even a
Dreadnaught
-class cruiser probably wouldn't be able to stop it from jumping to hyperspace. I doubt there's a fleet in the Republic that possesses both the means and the motivation to attack it. As for an internal assault, you'd have to have enough soldiers to subdue a ship full of thousands, buy them all aboard armed with nothing heavier than a holdout and hope you're capable of defeating the ship's security forces. Given the size of the ship and the scale of this venture, I'd wager its security is by no means trivial. A full-scale assault and shooting war is out of the question."
He tapped the side of the repulsorchair thoughtfully.
"If someone was foolish enough to start a fight aboard the ship, it'd be at close range, and the advantage would go to the combatants who are most skilled at close quarters combat, fast take-down, and avoiding security. Even then, you'd be stuck aboard the vessel, limiting your chance of escape in any event of discovery. In that case, your best defense would be justifiable self defense, downing your opponent with whatever you have at hand. Pulling a weapon in defiance of the ship's restrictions will not endear you with the crew, as other agents have pointed out. You'd be arrested or you'd be forced to reveal yourselves, and either path would mean an end to your secrecy.
Now, the ship's restrictions do not allow
any
form of weapon, self-defense or not. Defensive civilian weapons such as stun batons will be confiscated for the duration of your stay aboard the ship, though they may be returned to you when disembark. Apparently, your security is entrusted to her staff, though the personal guards of the elite aboard this vessel will almost certainly possess some degree of unarmed skill.
I've done my best to brief you on our best assessment of the situation so far. I can provide you with some weaponry, but I do so only after making sure that you've fully weighed the risks against the probable outcomes. If you still wish to have them, they will be provided along with your other equipment before you leave. Take a moment or two to think."
He turned to the other agents.
"Surveillance equipment we have in droves, simply name your desired sense or spectrum and we'll almost certainly be able to find something suitable."

Standing he started a short walk around the room.
