A bit of bad luck on Boz's part and a lot of skill on Stent's had meant that the Zeltron had made a big win in the first round.
"I assure you Mirana dear, if I had known how well my associate could play I wouldn't have invited him."
Aggrivating the other players, Mirana especially, might be unwise at this point. If they just played well, but not brilliantly, then that might put everyone at ease and, Boz was hoping, loosen a few tongues.

Markus allowed himself a smirk, but declined to comment on Mirana's playful accusation. Things were going better than he had expected. He had expected to be at a disadvantage, lacking the special talents or gambling experience of his fellow players, but he had in fact broken even. Deciding not to change his tactics for the present, he instead switched his focus to the crystal pendant that hung around Mirana's neck. The woman had been twitching with it all through the game. Was it simply what it appeared to be, a tell, (and a fairly obvious one at that) or could it be something more?
Pretending to scratch his ear, the agent used his visor to zoom in on the necklace. Even if it turned out to be nothing, it was a distraction from the game.

The Crystal Wake, en route to the Shinkai Abyss
"Speaking of which I'll turn on the fish finder and see if it picks up any humanoid sized or shaped objects out there as we near Zaron's boat."
"Very well," Halon said, nodding. He noticed his partner still seemed somewhat less than convinced with the explanation he had given him. Fortunately, their recent finds had given them greater leeway in dealing with any unexpected contingencies.
Still hoping to mollify Ryn, he recalled a bit of wisdom from his Academy days. "Tactics must never dictate strategy. Rather, it is our strategy that decides tactics."

He looked at the fellow agent blandly, blankly for a moment as he processed those words. "And strategy must be dictated by the goals of business, never strategy the goals." Nodding he turned once more toward the controls, perhaps his words of wisdom...okay the words of wisdom from a Hutt he used to know, would inspire the future actions and planning.

Near the Shinkai Abyss
The
Crystal Wake
streamed across the open ocean, making good time as it crested the small surface waves. Once within fifty kilometers of the Shinkai Abyss, the locator Detective Dravaal had given them began to pulse. The target was a few dozen kilometers out, which gave the agents time to review any tactics determined by their strategy depending on their goals.
Hopefully, somewhere in there was an idea of what to do if Salek Zaron's yacht was unattended. Floating in the water perhaps a hundred meters away was a small yacht. Given that it was the only other vessel within a kilometer and the locator was indicating that they were near their target, it was a safe bet that the ship belonged to the crime lord's son. Smaller than the
Crystal Wake
, it was only built for an individual or two, but the ship as a whole seemed to be of a higher class, its sleek build and powerful-looking engines indicating that this was a vessel designed for speed, and would likely be able to outdistance them if it came to a chase.
The ship simply bobbed in place as they watched, with no sign of activity anywhere aboard it. Turning to their own instruments, Ryn began searching for any sign of the man beneath the surface. Given the lay-out of the Abyss, this was no easy task. Schools of fish churned beneath the waves, darting too and fro, and the depths of the Abyss as it dropped away beneath them meant there were plenty of obstructions and hiding places that could prohibit their sensors from operating at full efficiency. But surprisingly, the agent managed to pull it off, picking up a man-sized object moving at a good pace some thirty meters down, along with the faint sound of some sort of propulsion system. Zaron was down there, likely with some sort of submersible.
Aspere Plunge Casino
Skill was something the agents possessed in great quantities. Luck had a more... unique relationship with them. Despite being the most skilled gambler at the table, Boz hadn't been as quite as lucky as Stent the past few hands. Unfortunately, over the next round or two he discovered that whatever slump of poor luck the others had been suffering had gotten to him as well, and it was only his skill that was keeping it from being a total loss. Stent's luck seemed to be holding, his empathy and deceptive abilities were keeping his newly acquired wealth from slipping out of his fingers.
For Markus, it was a different story. Apparently bored by the company he was keeping, he'd taken the opportunity to examine the crystal pendant that Mirana seemed prone to handling. The trouble came from waiting for her to leave it alone long enough for him to get a long look at it. Though it resembled a somewhat pale ruby housed in a frame built of golden wire, something about it seemed a little odd. In fact, as he watched it move around, he was pretty sure that the crystal was a fake. Well, synthetic to be more precise, but certainly not the equal in worth of a natural gemstone. The only thing that seemed to be salvaging the pendant's claims at value would be the extremely fine etchings that spider-webbed across the crystal's facets, likely crafted with some sort of precisely-wielded laser.
It was only when Mirana began spinning the pendant that Markus managed to lose track of it, snapping his attention back to the rest of the players.
"...the Chuodana is the only place aboard the ship where Ri may dine on live thimiars- the experience is
exquisite
."
Ri's upper lip was curled in an approximation of a smile, but it only served to expose the Amara's fangs.
"That sounds a little
too
fresh for my palette," said Shran Don, "if I want novelty, I think I'll stick to the Zero-G Bar & Grill."
"Only if you're a child who's easily amused," muttered Urias, looking rather sullenly at his dwindling pile of credits.
Not even bothering to conceal her disappointment, Mirana kept twirling her pendant.
"Yet another well-played round, gentlemen. Are you quite certain that neither of you is participating in the tournament?"
Somehow, Markus had acquired more credits. Admittedly, at some point in the back of his mind he was aware that he had been winning hands here and there, but this was a bit more than expected, especially given the fact that he had been focusing so much on Mirana's pendant that he had almost certainly misread just about every tell his opponents were giving.
Such were the mysteries of sabacc.
OOGM:
Luckifest 2009 continues its world tour!
Markus- 21. He manages to win 8000 credits, putting him at 11000 credits. And gets a good look at the shiny rock.
Stent- 19. Holding even 13000.
Boz- 16. Despite having a magic number as big as any two of you put together, the luck of the cards is fickle. Loses 1000 credits, 2000 remaining.
Hiem Neva- 12. Loses 1000 credits, 3000 remaining.
Ri- 11. Loses her remaining 1000 credits and she is out of the match
Mirana- 10. Loses 2000 credits, 1000 credits. She's in trouble.
Shran Don- 7, loses his remaining 1000 credits and is out of the match.
Urias Rishek- 3, loses 2000 credits, 1000 remaining. He's in trouble.

As they approached he dilagently kept at the readouts, and his work paid off. "We're near his ship, it should be right...there." he spoke up pointing in the general direction.
But he kept his eyes glued to the screen infront of him, "And, waite for it...waite for it. Yes, someone is in the water, using something to propel themselves. So what does your history and expience dictate as our strategy in such a situation?"
He was interested, as he saw it they had a few ways to go in this, but for now he would keep his opinion to himself.

"So what does your history and experience dictate as our strategy in such a situation?"
Halon was by the helm now, intently watching the humanoid shape below them on the fish finder screen.
By Quay, Ryn, that was damn near a stroke of brilliance...
He turned away from the screen, away from the enemy, looking back up at the sleek vessel ahead of them. They couldn’t run the risk of it taking off; fast as she looked, they would never catch her if she did.
"Bring us astern of the yacht. Once we have it secured, we will have Zaron."
"Oh, you should probably arm yourself, Ryn." Scooping up one of the concussion grenades from the table, Halon left the pilothouse and positioned himself on the
Wake’s
bow. As he removed the slugthrower in his pocket with his free hand, Halon activated his helmet's visual scanner, magnifying his view of the yacht's still deck, watching keenly for any signs of movement or life as they drew closer...

"Aye, Captain, about to their astern." Reaching back he picked up one of the spear guns whilst trying to keep an eye on their submerged target. Hopefully the fellow wouldn't rise before they had his boat secure.

As Halon moved to the bow of the ship, Ryn steered the
Wake
up to the stern of the other yacht. Halon studied the deck, not spotting any signs of anyone else aboard. With that in mind, what did he plan on doing to "secure" it?
Meanwhile, Ryn discovered that actively manipulating sensor systems to search for a humanoid-sized object and actively piloting a yacht were two separate tasks, and in the interest of avoiding any collisions, he'd have to abandon the former for the latter. Given that much of the ocean is in constant flux, it couldn't really be considered surprising that he'd lost Zaron's position by the time he brought the vessel to a halt.

This vessel can only hold so many people comfortably
, Halon thought approvingly.
Failing to detect any hostile activity on deck, Halon dropped the grenade back into his pocket and vaulted over the bow onto the yacht's stern. Gingerly, he headed towards the wheel, the slugthrower raised in both hands before him.
If the keys were still in the ignition he was eager to swipe them, but every step was deliberate, the fear of booby traps having momentarily supplanted his concern about armed opposition...

"Excellent play, Mr. Hunt," Stent quipped to his colleague.
Something is up. The deck must be fixed! Or you might be that good - that was the thought that the zeltron kept trying to push to the back of his mind. It was only the second hand! Surely every civil servant has their day, and this happened to be his. Except that this was most likely a moment and not a day.
Stent found himself amused by the short discourse amongst his fellow players. As for Miss Mirana's comment...
"Tournament," Stent mused, "honestly I never thought of it. I have never considered myself that much of a formidable player to be able to survive such competition."
But if he did, rather, if anyone on the team did, their chances of interacting with more people on the ship would increase. And if they did well enough, their chances of meeting those in-the-know would increase as well.
He looked over at Boz and Markus and continued his response to Miss Mirana. "I think, though, that we will definitely have to consider it. Do you know when the deadline to sign up is, and the requirements to join? Any special awards or prizes for the winner and runner-ups?"

Slapping the board out of frustration when he finally was able to look again he sighed, "Person of interest...missing on sensors. Back to the sensor board." Pulling the harpoon or spear shooter, whatever they called this thing, to rest against his shoulder he waited for noise.
As there was none from Halon boarding he went back to focusing on the sensors, the man couldn't have gotten away. There was a limit to how fast something could go in the water even with assistance. He'ld find it again...hopefully before it found them.

Markus Carfax
Aspere Plunge Casino
Well,
that
was unexpected.
Maybe there was more to this gambling thing than he had previously thought. Markus gazed at his winnings with obvious bemusement, slightly baffled at how he had managed to actually win the game despite focusing so intently on Mirana's pendant. Speaking of which, the results of his examination had been a lot less fruitful. It appeared to be nothing more than a trinket, probably of mostly sentimental value. Mirana was no more a superspy than she was a gambler.
"Well, this is most... most satisfactory." he stuttered, carefully counting up his winnings, and even more carefully remembering to keep in character. "I suppose, like most games of chance, one simply needs a head for figures."
Settling down for the third hand, Markus saw no reason to modify his playing style. It seemed to have paid off so far.

Boz had to restrain himself from exclaiming shock at Markus' skill.
"For someone who is less than favourable towards gambling you seem to really be having a streak of luck and skill Mr Hunt. At this rate your winnings will make up for any loss I make."
It was unlikely that Markus was really going to get into this, there was after all a job to do. Boz had noticed that the other man had been constantly paying attention to the other players, especially Mirana. Boz himself had noticed that the gamblers were getting mroe than a little annoyed at the way Lady Luck was favouring the newcomers.

Clutching his tiny weapon in both hands, Halon boarded the vessel. Carefully creeping across the aft deck, Halon couldn't spot anything resembling a trap of any kind. Unfortunately, the helm, like the rest of the interior of the vessel, was behind closed doors. Whether or not they were locked was still a mystery waiting to be explored.
Returning his attention the sensor suite, Ryn once again sought out their target, and once again found him some twenty meters down, drifting through the waters. Though as to what exactly he was doing, the Balosar couldn't tell.
Aspere Plunge Casino
The rule of sabacc seemed to becoming quite clear by now: skill and experience were good, but paled in the face of sheer luck. Over the past dozen or so hands, Stent Kannat's cards had ranged from good to excellent, and the Zeltron had been able to capitalize on his good fortune thanks to his excellent deceptive skills and ability to read others. Of the four players still active in the game, three of them were MI5 agents who happened to be now holding the bulk of the wealth on the table.
As her chips were collected, Mirana set her cards down with a sigh.
"Well Mr. Tyler, it looks as though this is the second defeat I've experienced with you at the table."
Admittedly, Boz hadn't managed to emerge at the top, be he'd still held his own throughout most of the match despite the relative weakness of his hands. This round, Markus had been the one to do poorly- fate had apparently taken his "head for figures" remark as a challenge, because he had managed to lose track of any pattern in the system after the latest few rounds of randomization.
"It looks as though I'll have to repay you in kind during the tournament."
Rolling her pendant between her fingers, she turned to the Zeltron.
"To finally answer your question Mr. Kannat, the buy-in for the tournament is ten thousand credits. The deadline should be coming up soon, but they might still have a few spots available... provided of course, that players such as myself don't beat you to it."
Urias snorted. "Now that you've lost at the two hundred credit level and the two thousand credit level, you might as well complete the trifecta and show your skills to the galaxy."
Mirana waved her hand dismissively.
"After all these bad hands, I've cleaned out my bad luck, which means I'll have nothing but good luck in the tournament- it all balances out in the end."
"Besides," she said with a smile, "it's only a few thousand credits for a chance to claw your way to the top of table after table of some of the biggest professional gamblers in the galaxy."
OOGM:
How does this keep happening?
Stent- 24. The winner of the round, whose 4000 credits won puts him at 17000. You and your stupid high rolling.
Boz- 23. Remains at 2000 credits
Hiem Neva- 22, holds steady at 3000 credits, making him the last of your opponents.
Markus- 14, 2000 credits lost, 9000 remaining. Counting randomly shifting cards is tough.
Mirana- 11, loses her remaining 1000 credits and is out of the match
Urias- 1, loses 1000 credits and the match.
