OOC: I should add that I still watch this thread consistently, but nobody's done anything recently to draw the ire of the Chief Justice ... yet. Needless to say I remain open for consultation, and indeed to intervene in breaches of the Republic Constitution.

Yeah yeah...

IC: Shawn Ventar

Coruscant

Slumming ... Shawn rolled his eyes, but went to change out of his uniform. Nava might be a Senator, but you wouldn't know it from her choice of friends - he suspected her network of contacts rivalled his own, if not surpassed.

"You coming, yes?" Nava called from the main room.

"Naturally." Shawn slid a vibroblade up his sleeve and went out to join her. She was dressed, as he was, in something more suited to a run-of-the-mill private citizen than someone who worked in the Senate. They made their way to the nondescript speeder that they'd acquired for trips like these. Shawn was characteristically quiet, but this time he was thinking about the Chancellor's speech - as unlikely as it was for him to take an interest in politics, that speech had caused quite a stir.

"Can she do that?" Shawn asked after a few moments, referring to, of course, how Territha had vetoed the bill.

IC: Senator Donnoc, internal corridor, Galactic Senate.
Location: Coruscant

"I would be obliged," The tall Kaminoan answered the Lepi eventually. As much as he could think about the earlier invitation with what was going on, Donnoc guessed time flowed slower at that altitude. Shea Ni turned to Jarath and motioned for him to go ahead, "By your leave, Senator."

Distracted, Donnoc glanced up at Ni. “Yeah sure, come along, then? Have you tried Ximino’s, yet? Very popular with senators, as I understand.

bee-doo, bee-doo

Donnoc grabbed at the datapad hidden in his light-weight robes of office, and opened it to see that the Vice Chancellor, Lin Traer, had sent him a private message, inviting him to a face-to-face at the same establishment.
He guessed that was a testament to just how popular the place was with the Senate!

Walking along with Ni, and trusting his other senses to guide him down the left-curving hallway while he gazed at the ‘pad, he tapped a message back to Traer:

Vice Chancellor,

Thank you for the invite. I have a prior engagement, this evening, with Senator Ni.

Coincidentally, it is also at Ximino’s, so if you don’t mind him/her/it sitting in, then I would be pleased to oblige.

Senator Donnoc

He sent that on its way, and had just stowed the flat communications device when it bee-doo’d again.

Looks like I picked the wrong day to give Gwen the evening off,” he muttered under his breath as he got the device back out, forced to renegotiate the action to avoid it tearing the lining in his pocket.

Mm. This time it seemed to be from some Corellian fem’:

Dear Friends,

I notice our party has slumped in power recently. As your new leader I will entertain ideas on how to bring our influence back to tolerable levels within the Senate.

Also, I have found it disturbing lately that some of us seem to have taken a place in line behind this upstart party, the Minimalists. This must stop. I understand that sometimes our two parties may agree on some bills, but to me it seems as though we are actually supporting the MPs in some ways. This must end; we are not here as an addition to Senator Vedis's retinue.

Work with them on bills if you must and it is in the best interests of the New Republic, but you will not be seen to befriend these upstarts. We are the Galactic People's Party and we are not out to play second to any party or ideals other than those of our constituents.

Regards,
Senator Furn of Corellia

Furn? Corellia? Donnoc furrowed his eyebrows, wondering if Vedis had jumped on the Donnoc and Chaygte bandwagon, and hired himself a running mate.

He decided to keep the message; he could refer to it whenever he needed to remember which party he belonged to.

As to “ideas on how to bring our influence back to tolerable levels within the Senate,” he was about to respond she should consider turning up to work in a Princess Leia slave-girl outfit, when he walked into a wall and dropped the datapad.

GM's OOC: As you may or may not have put together by now, BrentusofGath will be my new co-GM, replacing MASTERPRENN since he has been swallowed up by his newfound Modly duties. He will be playing the heads of both the Liberal and Minimalist parties, whereas I'll continue with the conservatives. That setup will make us even with seven players a head.

A big applause to Masterprenn for his work in this game, and...

A big applause to Brentus for standing up to take the co-GM position...

Hopefully this new delegation to allow me to be a little more active in this game at the player level, versus the system administrator. happy

Look for new domestic approval ratings maybe tonight, if not, then probably by Friday. I'll be adding in not only your new votes, but also bonuses/penalties for towing (or not) the party line, being actively (or not) voting, being well spoken (or not), targeting your constituency (or not), and any other things I can think of. wink

The Polling Agencies are almost finished! And your ratings will be getting a pretty big jump for some characters.

OOC: Approved by Brentus and I_H. Thanks gentlemen!

Name: Sha’no Ryn

Age: 28

Gender: Female

Species: Twilek

Appearance: Sha’no stands 1.5 meters tall, blue skinned with a long, proud lekku. Shapely, like most Twileks, she has high cheekbones, full ruby lips, and a hip to waist ratio that made her a very popular dancer.
Personality: Bubbly and outgoing, her surface appearance hides a deep intelligence. Used to using her looks to gain advantage, Sha’no knows what to do with the advantages she gains.

Schooling: High school and 4 years at political science university

Bio: Sha’no put herself through political science school on the money she made as a dancer. She was so desired by the wealthy elite to dance for them (due to her well conditioned form) that she made more money than most Twileks. She was raised in a ghetto on her homeworld and wants to help the underprivileged. At the age of 24, Sha’no was elected to the planetary government, shocking her rivals by her stance with the poor. After that, she set her sights on the Republic Senate, four years later, where she beat out her two male rivals. It was something never before done on her planet.

Politics
Representative For: Corulag
Party: Minimalist
Personal Platform: Coming from the poor side of town, Sha’no can’t understand why the rich and powerful don’t care about the places like where she came from. She wants to put those rich kriffers in their places, but knows that will be difficult without support.

IC - Sha'no Ryn
Corulag

Sha'no stepped from the Capitol building a new woman. It had been a hard struggle to get where she was. A Twi'lek on a planet full of humans did not have an easy time, and she'd had to take many risks. Some didn't go so well but most paid off nicely.

Because of this disadvantage, Sha'no knew she'd have to work toward the advantage of the poor and this was why she was thrilled when some of the galactic Senators formed the Minimalist Party. It was exactly what she had been looking for.

The current session was over, so there wasn't much sense in travelling to Coruscant, but Sha'no did want to write to leader of the party, just to make sure he was alright with her joining.

Dear Senator Vedis,

This is the new Senator from Corulag, Sha'no Ryn. I would like to know if I can officially join your Minimalist Party. That was part of my election platform and the people really seemed to appreciate it. As you may know, Corulag has seen better days and our people would very much like to be a part of something new.

I hope this note finds you well,
Senator Ryn of Corulag

With that done, there was little else for the time being, except to get to Coruscant and see her new office and the Senate chamber.

IC:Li Tol Rastor
Private Office, Corucant

Inactive was something that the Munn society did not tolerate of any of it's citizenry, yet Li had voluntarily drawn the ire of his people in hopes that he would be able to sift through the countless amounts of political garbage to see exactly who was what and where they would best suit his goals. His voice usually one of vigor, and constant presences within the great arena of statesmen was no where to be found in the last session, and now with a new party head Li was more then in agreement that it was a ripe time for reassertment. Vedis with his passionate bunch had made major head way, and as Li stood in the confines of his office his mind was working through various plans that would off set the Nabooian senator's momentimum.

"When you give very little, and receive everything in return then do you finalize realize true destiny", Li mused to himself as he sent a voice command to his communications console dialing up the frequency to the new Liberal party leader.

"Senator if you are not to busy I have a bottle of fine Correlian brandy that was delivered, and am looking for someone who might appreciate it's contents to share it with", he spoke as soon as the transmission allowed him to noting that a relaxed setting would be both soothing, and highly informative if he's fellow senator should choose to accept his invitation.

IC - Tak Vedis
Naboo, various

Upon landing in Theed, Tak was introduced to the newly elected Queen Maeti. She expressed her pleasure at his performance in the Senate and urged him to continue in what he was doing despite some recent setbacks. It was her opinion that the people were warming to the idea of the Minimalist Party and what it stood for.

He presented his report to her as well as a gift from Coruscant as was tradition in the old days and they had a short informal chat on the state of Naboo before he took his leave.

It was off to find a liquor store for HL to visit.

Filling his belly with some more warming liquid, instead of going to his apartment, he travelled to the poor outlying district where his soup kitchen was located. His old friend Charis had recovered from her injuries and was back at work, feeding the homeless and desperate. "Tak!" she screeched, rushing into his arms. "Ew," she said, taking a step back, rubbing her nose. "Have you been drinking again? You reek of cheap booze."

"I object," he informed her, not even slurring his speech in the slightest, "it was expensive stuff."

Charis simply returned behind the counter and continued spooning out portions to the waiting hungry. Tak went into the back, HL in tow. Before he could get down to work apportioning out more credits from his personal accounts for the day to day operations of the dozen shelters he had across Naboo, his datapad bleeped. Business, always business from that blasted senate. There were several messages waiting for him. The first was from Nava wishing him well. She was a good kid - he'd possibly confide in her about his work and ask if Xagobah had need of shelters for the hungry. In the near future, not now.

The next one was from one of the Chancellor's aides. Tak hrumphed as he read it. She came through quicker than he thought, but it was pure bilge from the agri-business suits and had no substance except to make those same suits richer. Yeah, the price of food might drop slightly under this system, but then more people would simply buy more and thus the suits would make more money - and yet there wouldn't be very much in the way of free produce for those truly in need. It had form, and for that much, he gave her credit, but it had no substance which was typical of agri-business types.

Scribbling out a reply, Tak imbibed deeply from his flask.

Dear Chancellor,

While I give you credit for being swift in your proposition, I see that this bill truly lacks any kind of muscle to really get food into the mouths of those who truly need it. This bill will make the agri-business people more wealthy than they are by making more food more accessible to the masses who can afford to buy it, thus generating extra wealth for the businesses, but I don't see how the destitute, jobless and homeless will benefit in the slightest.

However, it is a fair start, which I again give you credit for. Would you be so kind as to direct your proposed bill in its specifics to me so that I may offer ideas for changes?

Thank you for your time,
Sen. Tak
Naboo

The next bit of mail was from a new Senator. Sha'no Ryn was a dancer, if he recalled correctly from the last time he'd been on Corulag. And a damn fine one at that. He'd slipped a few credits into her - um, accounts. He hoped she'd remember.

Typing out his reply, he was just woozy enough to almost suggest she wear something skimpy to their first meeting, but sober enough not to actually do it.

Senator Ryn,

I think you may find life difficult in the Minimalist Party. Many Senators are quite hostile to the idea of fairness and true equality for the downtrodden masses. Many can't get past the idea that companies and government can each do different things for the people and each also are equally good at oppressing the people in their respective ways and their differing influences must be balanced out.

If this is what you believe, then you are welcome among the people and in the Minimalist Party. I would be delighted to meet with you when we are both near to each other. I am currently back on Naboo.

Sincerely,
Sen. Tak
Naboo

Another message bleeped on his pad. He was popular at the moment.

Dear Senators.

I am throwing a party to celebrate the
Anniversary of the removal of the Imperials
from Bellassa, and I would like to invite you
to join me in celebration.

May the Force be with you.
Senator Bastra

"Aw crap," Tak enunciated, "I forgot all about him."

Dear Senator Bastra,

I trust you are well? Please give me the details for this party - date and time - so that I may make every effort to attend.

Sincerely,
Sen. Tak
Naboo

Whew, he needed a medal just for answering all his messages. Turning back to his finances, a homeless human came up from behind. "Sir?" she asked, her voice frayed.

Immediately, HL's blaster rifle was aimed at her head. "Statement: Another sudden movement from any of your squishy parts and you will receive a frontal lobotomy - the hard way."

Tak waved the pesky droid away. "Don't let HL frighten you, young lady." Scowling at the droid, Tak reached into his bag and pulled out some credits. "We're currently shorthanded here; would you like a job?"

"What will I have to do?" she asked warily.

"Nothing of the kind you're thinking, my friend." He pressed the credits into her hand. "Ask the lady behind the counter - her name is Charis - how you can help her and tell I hired you as a helper. You'll stay here and will be well fed and paid a modest stipend a month. Does that sound good?"

A tear burst from the edge of her eye. Unable to speak, she simply nodded her head vigorously before accepting the credits and disappearing through the door to where Charis was busy.

"Query: And this makes you happy, Master?"

Opening his mouth to answer, Tak belched instead.

"Statement: Nevermind, Master."

IC - HL-40

Watching for interloping meatbags to blast, HL received a strange sensation. Someone was actually sending him a message. Since he rarely met a meatbag he didn't obliterate, HL had a short list of candidates for who could be the sender.

Accessing his disused message center, he was surprised to find it was not a meatbag he'd ever associated with. Instead it was a senator in his Master's party. If the incompetant organic meatbag wished to discuss politics with a droid, then HL would gladly eliminate the pesky being.

Greetings HL.

I have recently noticed that Vedis has
been acting a little strange. And I would
Like to make an inquiry. Is he alright?
I am concerned about your Master.

Senator Bastra

It was not HL's place to respond to such a query. If his Master wished to have this meatbag know what was wrong, he would use his squishy cerebellum to communicate. HL therefore redirected the message to Tak's datapad and put the matter to rest.

"Comment: You have an organic meatbag worried about your squishy parts."

"Of that, HL, I have no doubt."

HL's processors half expected such a reply. His Master could be the most logical squishy in the Galaxy, but he could also be the most frustrating and illogical one at the same time.

IC - Ashil Furn
Corellia

As Ashil packed the last of her things for her first trip to the Galactic Capitol, her assistant, Mercle alerted her to a new message. "Is it from the Chancellor?" Ashil asked hopefully.

"No, ma'am, from a Senator Rastor of the Galactic People's Party."

"Oh, let me have it and finish packing for me, would you?" she asked, stepping away from the closet.

"Senator if you are not to busy I have a bottle of fine Correlian brandy that was delivered, and am looking for someone who might appreciate it's contents to share it with",

Corellian brandy eh? This Muun couldn't be all bad.

Senator Rastor,

I would be delighted to discuss business in a friendly atmosphere. Corellian brandy always makes conversation go over easier.

I will be arriving on Coruscant to check over my new office and duties in a couple of days. We can meet then.

Regards,
Senator Furn of Corellia

That taken care of, Ashil went to check her flight arrangements.

Nava Kree
Private Quarters

Pulling her ears back, Nava put a cap on her head, and put on her goggles. She grabbed her hold out blaster, and strapped it to her thigh, under the suit she was wearing. She had a slit, where she could reach it quickly if needed. She then looked over at Shawn.

"You coming, yes?" she asked Shawn. As she put up some of her other equipment, another message came in. Frowning slightly, she walked over to her console, and looked at who was sending it. Shawn meanwhile, rolled his eyes, but went to change out of his uniform.

["Senator Furn of Corellia]

Nava tilted her head, as she made a face, her eyebrow shot upwards. 'Senator Furn?' It was not a name she recognized at first. Then it came to her. She had read something about a change of leadership within the Galactic people's party.. She keyed that message up, and re-read it.

[Galactic People's Party.

Regards,
Senator Furn of Corellia]

AHA!. So that is where she had heard the name. Sounded like she was attempting some form of last minute roundup. She opened up the new letter from the woman, that was addressed to her directly.

[Senator Kree,

At your earliest convenience, I would like to meet with you. I realize this is off session and you are likely to return to Xagobah for a time, but when you are back on Coruscant, I would like to speak with you.

Senator Furn of Corellia]

Well, not exactally a friendly sounding letter, but not really alluding to too much of anything.

Amazing. She was now getting letters from folks she would have loved to have spoken to earlier. Now, she was far too busy, and had to take care of other business at hand.

"Naturally." Shawn had replied from afar, while she quessed he was getting changed as well. A few moments later, he stepped back out, wearing something a bit more plain. They made their way to the nondescript speeder that they'd acquired for trips like these. Shawn was quiet, but then he suddenly spoke up.

"Can she do that?" Shawn asked after a few moments, referring to, of course, how Territha had vetoed the bill.

Nava didnt look towards Shawn, but she growled softly. "Chief Justice man not say anything. So maybe she can. But it still wrong. We voted, she not like it. Nothing said during debate. If she can simply do that, then why bother. We speak for our people, and she slaps us down. I sent word to Xagobah."

Nava turned, and gave Shawn a wink.

"I think her vidbox, be full of much mail, yes? My people not take being ignored lightly. None of Agri planets will."

As they neared the speeder, Nava handed Shawn a datapad. "This were we going. Is place in the Dead Zone. These are coordinates. Contact named Bendar. Him like to keep things... private, we say, between contacts. If anyone know something, he will. But, we be out of contact for few, while there. No signals get through that place. So we on our own. Bendar I trust. He go back - podracing days. Has nose for things..." Nava laughed softly, and then her face became serious. "Just not some things we pass, to get there..."

Nava tilted her head.

Nava climbed in, Shawn joining her. Together, they headed out for the coordinates indicated. Nava kept a sharp eye out, once they left the main city, constantly scanning the skies around them. She hoped Bendar could piece together a few gaping questions she had.

TAG:Xan, ANYONE ELSE

. . . . . .
Pol
Diplomatic Shuttle, Heading for Xagobah

Pol was quiet, listening to a few of the other younger aids, while he was reading the messages that the ship had recently received. He smiled, when he read one from Nava.

["Dar Pol."]It began. He smiled. She used a term of endearment. He continued to read it.

["Sorry for quick sendoff, but this must be taken care of by you. And I worry for you. I will follow in second shuttle soon. Things here in Senate went all plagh..must fix something before I go. Check on lead. I send files for you to see."]A listing of files, and other information followed. Her message continued.

[i]["SO Not be too mad at me. I know what you have done for me, yes? Learn much have I. All cause you. See soon, Nava.."]

Pol turned away from the others, to look out of a window, as he wiped a corner of his eye. Something small and shiny fell out from an envelope. A key. A few moments letter, he managed to find the present that Nava had left for him, and his eyes lit up in surprise. A welcomed gift indeed. As he sat back into his seat, he saw movement off to the side of the ship.

Pol sat up quickly, his ear pulled back. He quickly pressed a button, to speak to the pilots.

"What that, outside ship?" he asked them. The pilots were confused. Their sensors had not picked up anything. "Probably just a gas cloud Sir, dont worry about it.."

Pol frowned, as he stood, and walked down the length of the ship, looking out at other windows. He had SEEN something. And it wasnt a karking gas cloud.

Pol had made it to the dinning area, when their was a loud thump on the ship. Lights and sirens started to sound. Pol didnt like the look of things. The ship shook hard, as another hard thump was felt, and the lights went off in the shuttle. Emergency lights came flickering to life, as he picked himself up from the floor. He had the other aids moving, clearing the path so that the pilots and others could find out what was going on. Pol went to a terminal, and was typing away. He figured he only had a few seconds, and he quickly typed out a message. He sent it to two people.. Nava..and Senator Tak Vedis. He knew it would take awhile for Nava to receive the message, if she was still on Coruscant.

But Tak would probably be heading home to Naboo. He might be closer.

Pol barely had time to hit the send key, before the ship tilted wildly, and plunged the rest of the ship into darkness once more.

IC - Tak Vedis
Naboo - state banquet

As Tak sipped quietly on a clear liquid many in the room would naturally have assumed was water - Tak had a reputation as a teetotaller - his mind wandered away from the banal cretin spouting off about the people in some mindless rhetorical monologue. The speaker shook and shimmied like a jelly and that thought nearly made him burst out with laughter.

This banquet was being held in honor of the new Queen, however, he got the sense she wasn't very interested.

The monarch, whom Tak was seated on the right of, turned slyly to him and whispered, "got any of that rotgut for me, Senator?" She winked.

"Statement: Be careful, Master," HL was heard to chide, "remember last time you answered a question like that, half the galaxy burned."

A mischievous grin crossed his lips. He was just tipsy enough to indulge the youth's request when his datapad silently vibrated against his leg.

"Is that a datapad in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" the Queen asked as Tak excused himself from the table.

The message was a garbled communication from someone named... Pol? What kind of a name was that? Wait, he thought harriedly, doesn't Nava have an assistant by that name? The other addressee was Nava. Didn't she send him back early? Wouldn't he be on his way to Xagobah?

[Nava, Tak,

Trouble. .****snap*** sizzle **** Look out. Shuttle at**sizzle**..

Something wrong. Not ***crackle**.....

... what....*snap*... shadow....

Pol]

The pirates! Tak tried to dismiss the message - he wasn't in the mood to go traipsing across the galaxy, not in his condition. But on the other hand...

Damn it! He hated his conscience. Making appropriate political excuses, he got away from the banquet and hurried to the other side of the city to a small hangar. The Ebon Hawk was still on Coruscant, but there was another little secret up his sleeve.

A small, former Jedi starfighter waited beneath some dusty tarps. It was called Centurion and came complete with one of those thingies that is used for hyperspace travel. Projecting the most likely route from Coruscant to Xagobah and taking time factors into consideration, Tak... had another drink, and then he hit the auto pilot to take him on a journey he hoped would end in good news for Pol - and the lesson of course was: Kids, don't drink and pilot a starship.

He fired off a message of his own to Nava as the ship blasted out of orbit.

Nava,

I'll see if I can rescue Pol. If I am successful, we may have a few things to talk about.

Tak

IC – Sha’no Ryn
Corulag

Sha’no was pleased when a reply came so quickly from Senator Vedis. Or was it Tak? She was a bit confused. But then she remembered a human who watched her dance on many an occasion who called himself Tak and gave her lots of credits, slipping them into her… account. She really enjoyed seeing him and wondered if this might be the same man.

Anyway, she read over his message.

Sincerely,
Sen. Tak
Naboo

Now she knew it was the same man. He was always very respectable, kind… and cute too. Sha’no quickly wrote out a reply.

Senator Vedis,

I am very interested in joining your party and look forward to meeting you in person some time in the future, unless we have already met before, which I believe is possible. You have been to Corulag before, yes? I would very much like to renew old acquaintences.

Yours Sincerely,
Sha’no

With that done, Sha’no finished packing and made her way to the spaceport.

IC: Senator Rade Kell of Druckenwell
Apartment

In the midst of plotting out his next plan and reviewing the latest poll of his support on Druckenwell, senator Rade Kell noticed that he'd received a message from the Vice Chancellor of the New Republic, Traer Lin. Curious. Now, what could he want with me at a time like this? Reading through the message, he noted the mention of the "wave of protests". Interesting, it seemed that the outcry over the Chancellor's latest move was growing.

Definitely something worth looking into, and the Vice Chancellor would be as close to a direct source as he could get. Pausing only to snatch his coat from where it was hanging, he reset the security system on his apartment and headed down to where his private airspeeder was parked. Not long after departing from the apartment complex, he arrived at the location of their meeting, the restaurant Ximino's. Having risen to leave as soon as he read the Vice Chancellor's message, he failed to notice the second message waiting for him, one from the Chancellor herself....

IC: Senator Jarath Natal of Nubia
Tyderian Shuttle, en route to Coruscant

With a crisp white button-down, collar open and sleeves undone, Senator Jarath Natal cut a handsome figure. Sitting beside the grindstone and homely looking farmer’s wife, he looked positively Earthy. Rising he started walking forward as he said, “My name is Senator Jarath Natal. Growing up on the rolling plains of Nubia, my father taught me a lot of values”

VO: “and giving back to others.”

Natal: But most importantly, he taught me that everyone’s work has value. Some of my colleagues—those who voted for SR6—seem to have forgotten that. Some of them think its okay to take farmers’ products without paying them a dime. I disagree. I think that there are solutions that don’t require robbing your bank, or breaking ours. I think we can raise one person from poverty without knocking someone else down into it. That’s why I want you to tell your Senator that you support the Territhia-Natal Plan.

VO: Because real progress means bread on every table.

SUPPORT THE TERRITHIA-NATAL PLAN

“That’s it, Sir,” drawled Monesh. “You approve the final cut?”

Jarath started. “Huh?” The old man had been so grumpy on the ground. Apparently, folksiness was an indulgence best reserved for the halls of Coruscant. At the moment, though, he was too distracted to entertain such witty observations—or, apparently, the commercial they’d just previewed.

“All we did was swap out that boy for the little brown-haired girl,” his Senior Aide offered helpfully.

“I like the aesthetic better that way,” Jarath affirmed. “Where are we running this?”

“Coruscant’s a must for at least a one day rotation. We really need to reach the Outer Rim, though,” Monesh offered.

“What about a run through the Correllian media market? It could bleed into Hutt Space and run along the Spine form their,” someone else offered.

“We’d need to check our re-election coffers before making a buy like that,” his senior replied.

They were off to the races. Jarath, though, was increasingly distant. Let his drop, hiding it beneath the towel still draped over his shoulders. Most of them would assume it was exhaustion from the long day on the trail. It was true, anyway, that he regretted making a full photo-op out of a few seconds worth of footage for the commercial. He’d forgotten that it takes almost as long to scrub away the stench of algae and as it does to scrub away the colonies that clogged the water pumps. Its lingering vise grip on his nostrils was beating back any waves of nostalgia.

The more observant man, though, would notice the fatigue was centered in his eyes. There was a distant, almost forlorn look. He was not so much drowsy, then, as hyper-alert. It was only that his attention was focused on something else. His mind was still back in the brief, early morning visit to Rori he’d made just before landing. He’d picked up the deep fatigue lines and tear streaks that checkered Nyassi’s face, and belied her even tone. He’d also noted the curt manner of the staff at her hotel suite, possessed of a crisp perfection unusual for wage-workers. The short conversation with Mheri that had followed had confirmed his suspicions. The prospect was even more frightening when he considered that as far as he knew, Mheri was on his side within the company. If the elder could be said to have any side at all, that is.

“Prepare for jump in T-Minus 7 minutes. Navsat also delivered an info packet for us from Coruscant,” blared the pilot over the speakers, cutting into Natal’s reverie.

“Probably the Chancellor’s proposal,” said Monesh.

“Let’s get on that,” said his senior aide, stepping into a command role. “Jarath, get some sleep while we’re in hyperspace. Briefing on the proposal when you wake up, and final approval on the distribution of that SR6 spot.”

Monesh gave a sage, approving nod. There was a few moments of quiet bustle as everyone moved to their new tasks, then a quiet drift. About the same time, the shuttle stopped ambling through the stars, and pounced forward into a field of blue. Back into the fray.
