Yeah. New version's quite different though. Very different, really.

Hello, my good RPing pals. I've come to announce the start of a game, of my own creation. All of the information you should need is contained in the link here. If you happen to need anything else, please drop me a PM.
Thank you and goodnight.

Would anyone be against an RPG where the GM actually creates the players' characters? Say he creates nine characters and puts them in the opening post. The player could then choose which character (s)he wanted to play and, well, play as them.
I don't see why it wouldn't work. No one complains about video games having a set cast of characters (mostly fighting games). And it would ensure that the game would have a diverse cast of different personalities rather than ten loner badasses who are all great shots.

I had considered something like that, actually, where you would play the key character in a big, ancient war, and you would be forced to pick characters from their descriptions in a history textbook, but then be allowed to tweak history a little bit, ranging from a slightly different characterization to a battle going almost completely the opposite of how history recorded it.

I want to do something like that, too Reynar.
For instance, I've been lobbying for the creation of an Alien RPG. I just sumbitted the idea to His Imperial_Hammerness. Hopefully he approves. I think it might be a fun one (if done according to the TOS and the RPG Rulebook!)
There are two characters who are set for it that folks will have to choose. Ripley (of course) and 'Debbie'.
Any other characters could be made or up for grabs, but those two are the ones on which the story will center.

Reynar, I'm quickly becoming a big fan of yours. Just a multitude of good ideas!
I agree here as well. It'd be, for one thing, a good challenge to be handed a template to play off from and RP. I don't think that would much of a hinderance. One problem to consider are people that would take the character without reading their template and consistently act out of character and instead by stereotypes. For example, from a historical RPG, Napoleon is a grand character. Skilled in the art of manuevering power, boisterous, often times forceful with his generals, communiques between he and his brother Joseph show us little tolerance for weakness, etc. I'd call these general observations. They are taken from a number of sources and where one will say NAPOLEON ACTED THIS WAY another reference or biographer will paint the same scene a different way. Some paint him a genius, others paint him lucky. Some look at his treatment of Joseph as an insecure younger brother that lashed out at his brother, while others will look at as Joseph being a fool and Napoleon battling with the problem with loyaly burning within his chest.
As long as there is still room to make a character grow and live, I think it'd be an interesting excersise.
We see many Canon characters which we could say are characters established, but look at the out-of-character things we see them doing. For someone who has allowed the character grow and be affected by his environment, I could see changes working out very nicely.
In the end, I really have no objection, just my shoddy-two-cents.
It would be interesting. I would join your game, I think, depending on the subject matter.

Yeah, you just elaborated on the main issue. A lot of players do odd things with characters they themselves created, I highly doubt they wouldn't do the same with characters created for them. I suppose the only solution would be for the GM to strongly enforce staying true to the characters given. Instead of perhaps saying "[Name] has no desire for love in his life," you may have to just flat-out state "[Name] will not have a romance in this game. Ever." Because if there is one area where players get the most out of character, it's romance.

I'd agree. Romance, like a good sword, should be wielded carefully. Unsheath it, and you risk rending your characterization - no matter how fine before.
And you know, it does work to have romance. Star Wars wouldn't be Star Wars if we didn't have brothers kissing sisters, women kissing wookies, and a good many people kissing Vader's backside. It does work, and there have been examples of it working here in the RPF. It just needs to be...within reason, believable, and as (stated by Reynar) in character.
EDIT: LDU, hello! The Alien's RPG sounds interesting. I'll be watching with great interest to see how that goes with those two scripted characters. In fact, I'd even take place in your little labratory of goodness, but shamefully, I've never seen more than a handful of footage from the movies. [

Well yeah, I'm not against romance. I'm just saying that if the GM creates a character of that specific archetype, then (s)he may have to bluntly state "No romances for this dude," due to the fact that some players tend to make their loner badasses all of a sudden Shakespearean womanizers as soon as a decent looking female expresses intimate interest in them.
I think I've gotten enough interest in the idea to warrant some experimenting. Stay tuned.

Hahahaha! Yes! Yes! Yes! Good point!
I look forward to it. *Puts down the remote/takes hand away from the radio dial/and what ever else "Stay Tuned" originated.....

Reynar and Sithy,
Hopefully, Imperial_Hammer will get back to me pretty soon.
I'm committed to work and to getting Galaxy At War III resolved currently, but I'd very much like to see this Alien RPG approved and posted to the Forum.
This particular game idea is especially exciting (to me anyways) because it will be based on a possible real script begun by Ridley Scott and James Cameron, supposedly.
I read this opening script and was totally blown away by it. The game's object will be to finish that script!
Lets see what I_H has to say.

This idea of pre-made characters seems really cool. You could look at it as being similar to taking on a role in a movie.
