Actually, pre-gens are often used when introducing people to new game systems, though it's a perfectly valid technique otherwise when you're angling for a specific cast or story function. The latter tend to be a bit more generalized such as "make me a leader character" or something, but really it can be just as much a test of roleplaying as anything else. If you can't play a character without screaming angst and superpowers, you're quite frankly a terrible player who relies on cheap gimmicks to convey characterization. Actors don't pick and choose their parts, they bring the best out of their roles and enwrap the others into believing them.

Well, said ,LightWarden, and a nice analogy.

Reynar, you're talking about a game wherein we, the player, may still choose their template? Or are the interested parties to contact you and be given a character by you? Of course, I understand this is still in the planning stages.

I'm planning on creating ten or so individual characters with diverse traits and personalities, and then posting them after the opening post of the game. Sort of like a casting call, I suppose. "Here are the characters you can play, now pick one."

Of course, it isn't likely that ten people each express interest in a different character, so I am planning on having a selection process as well. A screen test, you could call it. Give them a situation and see how they write it out. Best one wins that specific character.

That sounds like a great idea, Reynar. The situation test is good for the player, too, I think. It's sometimes a little bumpy fitting into a new character. Getting a chance out-of-game would be interesting.

Are you thinking Non-Star Wars or Star Wars?

Non. For me, the Star Wars Universe is very limiting. Not to mention the fact that I can't think of anything to do in there that hasn't already been done to death.

I'm leaning towards something like this.

Had this idea a while back but decided to put it into some sort of coherent shape today. The following isn't an opening post, more an explanation of the idea.

Roalplain

High in the mountains, a strange town serves as the gateway to other worlds.

There are hundreds of Houses, of varying shapes, sizes and colours. These are the portals. Some are ruined and old. Others seem to grow in stature and magnificence, towering over the land. Some are firmly chained shut, though visitors often come to peer through the windows. Others are wide open but receive no attention at all.

In the north stand mighty Guild Headquarters, thriving community centres, and the magnificent Hall of History, where the bounties are displayed in enormous cases of marble and glass.

This is Roalplain, home of the adventurers.

Introduction

This gameworld is based directly on our actual forums and the threads within them.

Roalplain is a combination of the RPR, the RPF and the NSWRPF. The 'Houses' represent the games themselves. In Roalplain these Houses act as portals to the world of that game.

The appearance of the House corresponds directly to the success of that game. For example, legends such as WOTG or IBOP would be grand old mansions that loom over much of the town. Their gates would be locked, of course (in the same way their threads are). Still running sagas like Galaxy at War Part III would be stunning villas with doors still wide open to visitors. And then newer games like The Jade Lance would be cottages, small for now but promising in its general prettiness.

The Guilds would also be represented in the town. The GDG would of course be the largest and most prestigious- probably with a few towers and a large main hall. I imagine the CDG would be smaller and less showy but would have a very unique and somewhat quirky look of its own.

The social threads have very obvious representations. A coffee house, a bar and a strange portal to what appears to be the end of the galaxy.

The only place in the town of my own creation is the Hall of History, and it is around this place that the game will revolve. Allow me to explain...

General Gameplay

You will play as yourselves. Play using your real names or usernames, it's up to you. Appearance can be anything, though I think it would be a good idea for it to have some sort of link to your username. For example, I might choose to actually look like a Jedi with wings. Or I might simply have a flying Qui-Gon tattooed on my shoulder. Whatever.

The idea of the game is that in this town we are all bounty hunters. Our bounties are characters from the games. In Roalplain, we venture into a House/portal, and hunt the character until we drag them out kicking and screaming, and once they reach the town they become inanimate. At which point we put them on display in the Hall of History.

People (and I mean anyone who has ever had a character on the RPF, not just people playing Roalplain) can PM me details of one of their characters and I will put it up as a bounty. Then a willing hunter will enter the world of that bounty's particular game, and will begin hunting the relevant character.

The Hunt Begins

A Hunt consists of four stages: Accepting, Stalking, In For The Kill and Returning.

Let me use a few examples to demonstrate the process (I hope the two illustrious RPers mentioned won't mind me using them).

Pre-Hunt: DarthXan318 PMs me to nominate a bounty. She puts forward her character Krasus from IBOP.

I decide a value for Krasus (in this case it would be very high as he was a faction leader in a successful game), and then I post his details IC in the Hall of History.

Accepting: Saintheart decides he wants to take up the challenge. He prepares himself and clambers over the locked gates of the IBOP mansion and enters inside.

Stalking: Saint then posts details of himself stalking Krasus in the world of IBOP (but everything takes place inside the Roalplain thread). This stage of the hunt involves only Saintheart in terms of interaction. Therefore, it can take as long as he wants within IBOP's timeframe, and can cover as many posts as he likes.

In For The Kill: When Saint actually interacts with Krasus, he will have to begin tagging. If DarthXan chooses to play her character, then he will tag her. Otherwise, I will play the character and he will tag me.

Return: Saintheart captures Krasus, opens up the portal to Roalplain and drags him back through. Krasus is displayed in the Sith section of the Hall of History, and Saint wins much prestige amongst his fellow hunters.

The Aim of the Game

Bounty hunters will get various in-game rewards for both the quality and quantity of their bounties. They will also be rewarded for researching their targets well. The in-game titles and privileges that come with these rewards will be detailed once the game actually begins.

The wider aim of this game is to encourage recognition of other people's work. This is a community thing. Players will have to research their targets well in order to capture them successfully. The hope is that by getting to know another character, you can appreciate the efforts of that player in a way that you might not have otherwise. You might even come to appreciate entire games that you had never had cause to look at previously.

Did you have a character that you loved but barely used because the game died quickly? Nominate the character as a bounty and someone'll be reading up on them soon enough.

Maybe you had a character that was very successful but only five people noticed him/her because barely anyone played that game. Nominate him/her as a bounty and he/she will get some more attention.

Maybe your character is well known and plays a role in a successful game but you'd just like to see another player's ideas on how to hunt them. Go ahead and nominate the bounty.

Finally

Note that you cannot hunt your own characters, nor can you nominate someone else's character as a bounty. A bounty can only be hunted by one player at a time- if they fail or quit the hunt, another player may take their place.

The town of Roalplain will of course be ever changing. New houses will pop up as new games pop up. Houses will change in size. Etc.

I'm quite tired so I don't think I got everything there. But hopefully I got the nuts and bolts of the concept across.

Cheers Xan. happy

Everybody, if you're reading, please tell me what you think! Pros, cons, the usual sort of thing. I think there's probably a few flaws I haven't spotted, please point them out! What do people think of the idea? Is it viable? Have I explained it properly? Would you play it? Etc.

One problem, is that it would be like reiterating information on a Star Wars level, without everyone's knowledge of the basics. We would need some way to give everyone a crash course on Mass Effect information. Unless we did it in a really long Opening Post, or found a way to condense it, which would be hard.

What we would need to explain:

Mass Effect/Biotics
The Council
The Reapers
Mass Relays (I didn't figure who built these until well into my first playthrough)
Spectres

Anything else? I guess we would have to dish out the events of the first game if this RPG is intended to be a sequel.
