I dunno, some people do very much get their noses out of joint about it. That might be dependant on the way it's handled, or it might be just the reaction to Ashley in Mass Effect. Either way this is a topic where you have to be very careful, as people can and do get outraged regardless of which way you portray it.

Hello NancyAllen!

I think you'll find the people here to be much less militantly opinionated than in the Senate forum. This is because we're here to work and write on RPGs, not discuss things like religion and politics and etc. In fact, I tend to send serious debates on these things back over to the Senate.

Please enjoy your stay here, and feel free to explore and create religious RPGs. However, as was stated, please do not confuse critiques on RPGs with critiques about the ideas in your RPGs. The former is usually technical and related to writing and gameplay, such as Lightwarden's post. The latter is usually ideological, heated, and debatable.

I assure you Saintheart and myself are equal-opportunity moderators. As long as ideas are treated respectfully, we don't care what they are. Keep the peace, role play, and all will be well.

For future posts in this thread and others, please keep the discussion of religion and the like tethered to the science and art of role-playing. Attempts to inspire more serious debates (even in social threads) will be stopped and referred back to the Senate.

Just dropping in here to back my fellow mod on every point he's made. RPGs here will be scrutinised for how well they would work (or do work) as games, rather than scrutinised for their subject matter per se (This is not to say you could create a RPG whose subject matter was against the TOS, but that's a whole other analysis, and not what we do here.)

For what it's worth, nancy I regard your most recent concept for a game as an interesting one. Care to put together a prospective first post and put it up here for feedback?

Certainly. I have a few ideas about this one, but one of the things I was thinking was what day it would take place on. Pre Day 1 for example we could have Senator Palmer, pre Presidential canidacy, Jack's domestic situation, ect. Post Day 3 we would be looking at the aftermath of the attack, Ryan, Chase, and Jack's frame of mind over his actions. I also want to see what other ideas might be brought in...without dropping any spoilers what elements of Hunt for Red October or Metal Gear could be brought (not putting them into 24, but having a plot element, the bad guy turning out to be good just to give an example, that's an idea I want to play around with). I will put up a tentative introductary post to introduce some of the story threads I want to use, including ones I haven't brought up yet. We can discuss exactly when to have it set later.

My final comments on religion. The question was asked. I gave what I considered an honest answer. If people can handle the issue of religion then great. If they get upset over a character mentioning God, then...well, is the problem with them or with the story? I don't know I have an answer to that. In all fairness though me (and 24 for that matter) using the Chinese as antagonists would upset people, the same as people were upset about Islamists being the enemy or the use of torture. I think the best advice I can give is to be very careful about how you implement an idea.

I'd say that as long as distinction is made between Muslims and Islamists, people would have no real reason to complain. Unless they're so blind as to assume that the entire Islamic world is filled with nutjobs declaring Jihad on the West...

nancyallen, if you are worried that having a RL race or religion as the antagonist would be disagreeable, you could follow the example of the Command & Conquer games, or the 007 film franchise, and have a fictional multinational organisation as the bad guys, like S.P.E.C.T.R.E. the (cue fanboy moment) Special Executive for Counter Intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion.

It's less about being concerned about offending them and more a case of it being worth saying how there will be those who will be offended at the portrayal even when they are shown in a sympathetic light (the blame for terrorism being placed on innocent Muslims for example).

If you're so worried about offending people, don't do it. It's that simple. The fact that you're worried about offending people shows that you're not entirely comfortable with it yourself, which means you should probably find other subject matter to discuss.

If you still want to do a 24 game, you could focus it on Internal Affairs, a mole, double agents, arms dealers, kidnappings, etc.

No I'm happy to use 24 and the Chinese. My point is if anyone were to focus on a particular to do it delicately. Even though Iraq wasn't mentioned that's what Day 2 was about, and done well. Kang and Kudos on the other hand were a bit blatant.
