An extremely stupid trope, wherein one or more members of the main character's support cast get killed off in a sadistic and pointless manner so that the main character can feel angry/angsty/have a good reason to go murderin'. Victims usually include women, children, best buddies, parents and beloved peasant villages. It's done to add drama, and the problem is that it's done poorly in a grand majority of occasions, since the author manages to fail to actually make it dramatic. If it's there for all of a line or three in your backstory before getting the axe, you've failed.
"But wait," you say, "I'm not one of those incompetent idiots-"
Yes, you are. In an attempt to inject your characters with grim n' gritty edginess that shows their broken souls who need the loving touch of a (wo)man to make them whole again (nine out of ten quack psychologists recommend communal bedrest as the cure for what ails you), you have managed to mine pure unprocessed failure. I cannot be bothered to care about your disposable props, do not show them to me until you can manage to do it without being completely ham-fisted about it. 10 yard penalty, do not touch the "kill beloved" button until you have proven that you can write likable supporting characters and go through a story without ever hitting the damn button.

I think most people know that's cliche, but they do that because it's fun to do.

I'd say "then do it with the like-minded", but that gives us the comedy goldmine that is the Star Wars Fanon Wiki.
Point is, these people tend to really, really suck, and they don't improve at all. It creates an endless cycle of ego-stroking and wish-fulfillment, which may be fun for the guy playing it, but since roleplaying is a group activity, it's really terrible for everyone else involved. If you cannot understand why this is a bad thing, then go off and have your characters cry a few single tears over their burning homes and swear vengeance on those responsible. It's not as though my negative opinion is going to stop you.

Well, according to you most people do this, so I don't think they care.
And I'm just saying, not trying to be mean or anything ok, I'm not trying to make you look stupid or anything.

I like the Grand List of RPG Cliches.
95. Selective Invulnerability Principle
RPG characters are immune from such mundane hazards as intense heat, freezing cold, or poison gas... except when they're suddenly not. Surprise!
192. Know Your Audience (Vyse Rule)
Every woman in the game will find the male lead incredibly attractive.

The worst part is, they're not even original enough to draw their own pictures of their characters - they just end up using really obvious pictures of Quinlan Vos or Luke Skywalker instead. Making it look very retarded.

That's an unfair accusation. Most of them aren't that dumb.
They're this dumb.
