In terms of killing major hero characters, Mara Skywalker is a very "safe" decision. She's an important character in terms of the dynamics of the Skywalker family, but she's not a movie character, and she's a part of the older generation of Han, Luke and Leia rather than one of the younger Jedi knights like Jacen, Ben, and Jacen's sister Jaina—she's not one of the characters who'll be expected to carry the story into the future of the timeline from here, in other words.
In short, you get maximum story impact for minimum fan outrage.
"Maximum story impact for minimum fan outrage"? Cred ca tipul asta nu stie pe ce lume traieste si habar n-are cati fani are Mara de fapt. Asa cum a spus si MaraJade 4S, impctul va fi mult mai mare decat cel din Vector Prime, in care l-au ucis pe Chewie, care e adevarat ca nu era personaj principal, dar totusi era singurul personaj din filme care a murit.
Ma mira linistea care domneste momentan pe forumul de literatura. Probabil e din cauza spoiler-policy-ului care interzice discutia despre detaliile unei carti timp de 30 de zile de la aparitia sa, cu exceptia unui singur topic "spoilers allowed".

I dunno... she had to die someday, but having her killed in the middle of some book in the middle of some series is too "by the way".
You know, "the grass is green, the sun is up, oh, look, Mara's dead". It sucks they give it such little significance.
For Mara, dying in combat is certainly a must (she's always been one of the most dynamic characters), but I kinda figured she'd die to save others.
The fan(atic) thing is really exaggerated. Some author had to write about it, for crying out loud!
