As a premier group of geeks, I guessing there is some interesting reading that goes on in our little homes...so what is everyone reading at the moment???

Over Christmas I read Andy Taylor's book "My Life in Duran Duran," (or titled something to that effect). Eh, it was interesting enough, but I has hoping for some more groupie stories, to tell you the truth...

Right now I'm finishing up, "He's Just Not That Into You." Since the movie is coming out soon, I'm thinking that would be a fun movie night out for the gals in the group. The book is painfully honest, and I gotta say...it's probably good reading for lots of the men in our group, too...Ouch.

I also bought the new "unauthorized" bio on Stephen King. It looks to be very interesting, and once I get it started I'll let everyone know how it was.

If anyone wants to read the Duran Duran book, it's available. I'll be done the chick-lit soon enough, so that'll be ready to pass on too. Let me know if you are interested.

I, of course have been reading my historical smut. happy oops romance I mean. I also brought home Weird California looking for some trip ideas for next month. I am on the list for the Twilight series at work. All I hear is good stuff about those from the kids and the adults. Earls says he is reading Star Wars Insider and that is as book as he gets. I was also very excited to get my Sunset magazine today. woohoo My favorite series of books was the Left Behind books

I've actually been wooed by fantasy for the first time in years, and highly recommend George R.R. Martin's a "Song of Ice &Fire""Song of Ice & Fire" series. I think part of this is Martin's use of a historical event - "The War of The Roses" as a source of inspiration. The gritty realism and the well written characters have sucked me in like few fantasy novels have before...

Other then that, there's another of George R.R. Martin's series known as the Wild Cards universe... I liked it because 1.) its about superheroes and 2.) because of its realism. Tor Books recently relaunched the property with a new trilogy, but there's been like eighteen books since the eighties. Martin edits the series, as it's more of an anthology mixed and formed like a novel. Wildcards was originally his Superhero Roleplaying Game universe and many of the original authors who contributed were his players. It's since grown beyond that and now focuses on a new generation of heroes and how the world is much the same (they've still got American Idol), but also very different (they've got a reality show/idol show based on superpowered contestants).

Food's done. More later.

Well...let's see...I recently finished JD's Andy Taylor book. Over Christmas I read A Thousand Splendid Suns which was really good. Makes you appreciate life here, especially as a woman. I plan to read Kite Runner too.

Right now I'm reading Web Publishing with HTML and CSS for a class I'm taking. I'm having a hard time staying awake with that one.

JD - how's He's Just Not That Into You? The movie looks funny.

Wow, Leia...you read REAL books. wink

The book is pretty good. I gotta say, men are in trouble all around though...or actually maybe women are, 'cause it seems like no man could possibly ever REALLY be into a woman based on this book. Does he NOT wine and dine you? He's not that into you. Does he NOT call very often? Not that into you. Does he ever turn you down for sex?? He's DEFINITELY not into you. It's really written in an amusing way, though, so it's a fun read. It makes you examine your relationship...although I'm not sure in a totally good way. I'll be happy to lend it to you when I'm done.

As always, I'm reading something Star Wars. Right now, I just picked up Wild Space- A Clone Wars novel plus the latest comics from DH. From there, it'll be the new novel: Luke Skywalker and the something from Mindor.
Just recently finished The Tales of Beedle the Bard & got caught up with The Spirit graphic novels. Also waiting for Kimmie to start & finish Twilight(1st book). She's currently reading The Spirit and had just finished The Subtle Knife(book 2 of His Dark Materials, bk 1 is The Golden Compass & bk 3 is The Amber Spyglass). It's a really good trilogy if any-1 hasn't read them.

Those are some really tough standards! I don't think I know many men that could pass all those tests!

Well hey strangers! I got lucky today and am bailiffing on a slow Friday! I miss everybody! Looks like the club is going well though- keep up the good work!

I agree on those hi standards though- sounds like we men-folk are on not carrying our weight. I have recently had a change of heart and I'm trying to meet some of those standards for my wife, who richly deserves the attention (after 20 years of friendship and 15 years of marriage she deserves some attention!).

Regarding books, I've re-read the Republic Commando triology, topped off with Order 66. Crikey I love that stuff! Good writing, great storyline, and wonderful deep characters. Give it up for Kal Skirata/Papa Kal! Good o'l buir.

I also am into the Coruscant Nights books, having read 1 & 2. I have CN3 on my nightstand and will start it once I fininish another Clone Wars era novel- the Cestus Deception.

Reading the SW novels really helps me relax and bleed off steam from being exposed to the dark side constantly. I miss you guys. Still meeting at "the old" Round Table on Truxel?

Me? Well let's see, I'm always reading . . . I'm reading Tolkien's novella Farmer Giles of Ham, a high fantasy that's set in the Romanised British Isles from The Tolkien Reader. I'm also reading a story by Poe (oh by the way, just bought me a sheet of E.A. Poe stamps that just came out!) called . . . good grief! I forgot the name, but it wasn't one of his most well known stories. I'm also reading a book called The Complete Book of Werewolves, which is actually more scholarly than it sounds: it's by a university professor and covers the werewolf myth and lore from ancient beliefs all the way to pop lit and horror flicks. Then I'm reading a book (here's where my academic scholarly days left overs really come out!) of the 17th Century Enlightenment philosopher Emmanuel Kant's writings, boring to most but us academic nerds. Going back to Werewolves, I'm reading a back issue of Marvel Comics Werewolf By Night from the early '70s. For more practical purposes I'm reading a book on how to market your own book that you write (so it's a book about books), and for a computer sci class I'm taking I'm reading a text called Computer Concepts. Not to mention a collection of earler Flash Gordon Sunday comic strips that I bought at WonderCon from three years ago and, but of course, a Star Wars Insider issue.

Now am I a book worm or what? LOL

It's nice to hear from you again Ekim! Hope you can make it back to the meetings some time. Yes, we're still at the Round Table on Truxel Avenue!

Just finished Coruscant Nights 3: The Patterns of Force. Not a bad read and it was left open for another go around. Now I'm rereading the single comics of the Empire era. Just started the Biggs portion of it. No more new books for me till after WonderCon(gotta save those republic credit$.

I haven't much kept up with this thread, have I? I guess that would be because I never get to read anything much more substantial than the newspaper...and that doesn't even get to happen very often.

I think the next book I'm going to read is "I Can Make You Thin" by Paul McKenna. My understanding is it's sort of a self-hypnosis book. I want to eat chocolate and potato chips and then think myself thin...hopefully, that's what the book will teach me. praying

Anyone else read anything good lately??

I just started reading the Republic Commando books, working my way through Hard Contact right now trying to catch up! Also, a buddy at work gave me a Dark Tower book, the Gunslinger by Stephen King, said I'd enjoy it. Once I finish Hard Contact I'll be starting in on that one!

I LOVE Stephen King! Funny, though, I didn't like the Gunlinger books that much. I think the last one in the series that I read was the third one...I do remember reading The Drawing of the Three and liking that one (the second one). I'll be interested in your opinion on them when you're done. I sort of think they are boy-books (is that like a boy-bands?) and maybe that's why I didn't like them. I guess I should try them again...since I read the first two in high school. Wow, that makes me feel old.

I'm STILL reading the bio on Stephen King. It's my leisurely bathtub book, and since I mainly have to rush through the shower, I'm getting through it VERY slowly. He's had quite a life...no wonder he's so whacked.
