It's not a book book per se, but J. Michael Straczynski's relaunch of Thor for Marvel Comics is particularly well done... bringing the God of Thunder back into the fold as a "must read" title. The story explores some poignant topics like Hurricane Katrina and civil arrest in Africa. Other then that... Mike Mignola's Hellboy is heartily recommended. Nazis, Pulp Action, Reenvisioned Folktales, weird science... what's not to like?

Recently finished Lost on Planet China, and it was a delightful bit of fluff reading about a westerner's three month stay in country. Wasn't as good as Americ an Shaolin, but quite a fun piece of light reading. Restarting a William Gibson novel from a couple years ago called Spook Country - I found myself doing the same thing with his previous novel, Pattern Recognition, and liking that one pretty well in the end. His style is not for everyone, but I certainly enjoy it.
