Okay, as much as I hate to say this ... Star Trek kicked ass! That was very well done!! The way the story flowed reminded me of Raiders of the Lost Ark, adventure, action with comedy sprinkled in. If they keep up this story line, I am sure I will be a fan of the next movie as well. It was very well done and very entertaining (gah, I can't believe I am saying this about a "Trek" film!) wink

Well Devin..being a huge Star Trek fan of the previous 5 series and 10 films..it is refreshing to see a brand new Star Trek universe now. Without giving anything away for people who haven't seen the movie..it's great that some of the things that we were used too are now gone and now things that we never seen before are going to happen. Sure they kept some things fresh from the original series including the first 6 films and also some Next Generation episodes but overall we are finding out that even for a show that is iconic for 40+ years that you can find new things to make it original and draw in a new crowd as well. Star Trek is on it's way to be the first film of 2009 to make over $200 Million which will happen this weekend. It's only behind the new Aliens vs. Monsters..at $191 to $193 or something like that. You can see the total numbers on my blog of my myspace page which shows the total numbers of the top 10 films currently which includes both films. Star Trek will probably be terminated by the new Transformers movie but considering that Star Trek has made $200 Million that is quite an accomplishment. Wolverine completely died so far..Terminator Salvation is geared for the male audience and probably won't make $200 Million. The new Night at the Museum may have a chance and Harry Potter is now darker and geared for an older audience.. of course you have GI Joe as well but overall I think the 3 films that will have 2009's number for the summer will be Transformers, Star Trek and Night at the Museum..any thoughts of what other films could compete with these 3 for the summer and/or 2009? Just edited this reply and thought about the movie UP..I just saw the movie as and advanced screening with my security company and thought it was a great movie. With Pixar involved with Disney anything is possible and Rotten Tomatoes has it at 100% so far. UP may be the other competition for the summer as well...it may be Wall E's answer from last year.

It's interesting because some of the previous Star Trek films were directed by non-Trekkers. And they did at least fairly well if I remember correctly.

I think the most successful films, like good novels, focus on the human elements first and the trappings of the setting second. Kershner made Empire so much stronger then Lucas could've because he was a master of character driven films. William Gibson made the Matrix film's first script that much better not because he was the godfather of the cyberpunk movement, but because he knows how to write. No one with any sense will care about a property in the long run if the characters are utterly mediocre or secondary to technobabble or snazzy special effects (sorry, George)...
