Well G.I.Joe was a pretty big chapter in my childhood, I spent many hours as a kid having my Joes battle Cobra and I watched the cartoon and collected the comic books religiously, so to see the direction the film is taking just floors me. I guess I wasn't too bothered by Transformers since I wasn't as invested. My knee jerk reaction when I first saw the new designs for the Transformers was not pleasant, I did actually enjoy those movies. The new designs for the Joes makes this film look campy and lame, and to me thats just sad. G.I.Joe might have a bit of tongue and cheek in it (c'mon Shipwreck actually has a talking parrot), but the comic series had some serious writing in it and complex plots/storylines. To me this movie just stomps all over the Joes and my childhood memories of them, and now a whole new generation of kids will probably think this version of G.I.Joe is stupid and wont even realize the rich history it has.

It seems that Hollywood not Cobra will be the force that destroys G.I.Joe. Sad. But, then again, at least Uwe Boll didn't direct it!

I'm sorry - G.I. Joe was campy. It had some interesting plots, but it was never "highly sophisticated" - when you have Shipwreck, his parrot, Snake Eyes, and Snake Eyes' dog dressing up (badly) as lounge singers to pass a COBRA check point, you can't seriously expect to be... taken seriously. The cartoon wasn't and it isn't, and that's fine (I unfortunately can't speak to the comic and sadly I don't think a huge majority of the people who remember GI Joe remember and/or read the comics). Sometimes, embracing your roots can be pretty liberating. For more some funny what the heck moments, click this. There are eight videos in all, highlighting the absurdities and unfortunately misguided attempts at being politically correct in the show.

And you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way. But if you're really looking for an updated take on the property, Warren Ellis did a pretty respectable job with GI JOE: RESOLUTE.. Cobra Commander is actually scary. Whodathunk?

-TJ

EDIT: Added Resolute's link in. Yo Joe!

EDIT EDIT: totally didn't see you were talking about the comic being sophisticated at first.

Yeah the cartoon was campy, but it was fun and exciting when I was a kid, and even now I enjoy it with all its goofiness, parachutes that came out of the back of shirts, no one could hit a dang thing with their gun, laser guns at that; its all good and I wouldn't have it any other way either! The comics were where G.I.Joe really was cool though, I mean all of the good storylines, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Stalkers time in Nam together which sets up Snake and Storms history with the Hard and Soft Masters, when Firefly and Destro tried to kill Snake Eyes at his cabin with Spirit and Airborne trying to protect him, Quinn, the Oktober Gaurd, Springfield (not just the Simpsons) and the "Fred" gaurdsmen, along with Destro's coupe against Cobra Commander during the Invasion of Cobra's island nation, and then his struggle to take back Cobra! Oh and the issue where Ace and Scarlett in the Sky Stryker take on Wild Weasel and the Baroness in the Rattler, after trying to kill each other multiple times and both their planes shot to hell, they fly by inverted and salute each other as honored adversaries before returning to their bases, so cool! Man, good times, good times!

I just watched that G.I.Joe Resolute series, and if this movie looked half as good as that, then I would be psyched! As it stands now, this movie looks like the live action Streetfighter movie with Jean Claude(the muscles from Brussels) Van Damme! Ouch!

Teachers and Cops

These 12 are actual comments made on students' report cards by teachers in the New York City public school system. All teachers were reprimanded but, boy, are these funny!

1. Since my last report, your child has reached rock bottom and has
started to dig.

2. I would not allow this student to breed.

3. Your child has delusions of adequacy.

4. Your son is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot.

5. Your son sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to
achieve them.

6. The student has a 'full six-pack' but lacks the plastic thing to
hold it all together.

7. This child has been working with glue too much.

8. When your daughter's IQ reaches 50, she should sell.

9. The gates are down, the lights are flashing, but the train isn't
coming.

10. If this student were any stupider he'd have to be watered twice a
week.

11. It's impossible to believe the sperm that created this child beat
out 1,000,000 others.

12. The wheel is turning but the hamster is definitely dead.

------------------------------------------------------------

These 16 were taken off actual police car videos around the country:
[these are some mighty 'quick witted' cops!]

16. 'You know, stop lights don't come any redder than the one you just
went through.'

15. 'Relax, the handcuffs are tight because they're new. They'll
stretch after you wear them a while.'

14. 'If you take your hands off the car, I'll make your birth
certificate a worthless document.'

13. 'If you run, you'll only go to jail tired.'

12. 'Can you run faster than 1200 ft/second? Because that's the speed of
the bullet that'll be chasing you.'

11. 'You don't know how fast you were going? I guess that means I can
write anything I want on the ticket, huh?'

10. 'Yes sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don't think it
will help. Oh, did I mention that I'm the shift supervisor?'

9. 'Warning! You want a warning? O.K., I'm warning you not to do that
again or I'll give you another ticket.'

8. 'The answer to this last question will determine whether you are
drunk or not. Was Mickey Mouse a cat or a dog?'

7. 'Fair? You want me to be fair? Listen, 'fair' is a place where you
go to ride on rides, eat cotton candy and corn dogs and step in monkey
poop.'

6. 'Yeah, we have a quota. Two more tickets and my wife gets a toaster
oven.'

5. 'In God we trust, all others we run through NCIC.'

4. 'How big were those 'two beers' you say you had?'

3. 'No sir, we don't have quotas anymore. We used to, but now we're
allowed to write as many tickets as we can.'

2. 'I'm glad to hear that the Chief (of Police) is a personal friend
of yours. So you know someone who can post your bail.'

AND THE WINNER IS...

1. 'You didn't think we give pretty women tickets? You're right, we
don't.........Sign here.' [ouch!]

Hey Rogues,

I thought that anyone that grew up on the G.I. Joe cartoon and comics would dig this and you might even if you didn't! Its totally funny!!!

The Ballad of G.I. Joe

The end part is just the best! grin

Oh yeah, saw the movie, (I just had too), anyway I thought it was better then Wolverine but along the same lines as that Van Helsing movie that came out a few years ago. Big on special effects, but weak on story. They took A LOT of liberties with the characters and their backstories, heck even with the backstory for "G.I.Joe" itself. All in all, if you miss it in the theater you are not missing much. See you all tomorrow and we can really get into this if we want to!

I thought GI JOE was hilariously bad - and hilariously awesome. It felt like grown-ups playing pretend. Dude - seriously - "Cobra" breaks into the Joe base with drill machines, and we have underwater "toy commercials"... I mean sub fights. There were liberties, sure, and maybe because I wasn't overly familiar with the original materials it didn't make me screech "what the heck?" in the theatre. Still, it was a big dumb loud action movie and I enjoyed it for that reason more then Transformers. At least here, I got the sense everyone was in on it like Stephen Colbert is on the Colbert Report, rather then a "serious" Transformers movie franchise getting bad stereotypes and juvenile gags. I couldn't reconcile tearful screams of "OPTIMUS!" with the twins or Devastator's... ahem... anatomy. But GI Joe? Yeah, sure. Whatever. I mean...

"YO JOE!" applause
