I bought my new armor yesterday. I hope that I'm never in a situation that I would need to use it...

RE: Insomniacs only
I belong to a group called The Assosiation for Renaissance Martial Arts (ARMA) - though we also do medieval stuff as well. We are always looking to educate more so we'd be glad to have ya.
Heres the site:
http://www.thearma.org
That goes for anyone who is interested in studying historically correct swordplay. Even if you dont have any experience its cool. We just recently had our first girl join (for the Salt Lake group- there are groups worldwide)- so the fems are welcome too!
While were at it- here is some of the armor previously mentioned, that I use:
http://www.albionarmorers.com/armor/mercenary/breastplates.htm
http://www.albionarmorers.com/armor/mercenary/plackard.htm
And here is the new sword I just got in the mail today!!!! Happy new sword day to me!!!
http://www.myarmoury.com/chad_swor_dt2142.html
This isnt the super expensive one I mentioned at the park- I wont be getting that one till next summer.

I'm really tempted to post a thread on how to do markup codes.
Sounds cool Allen, do you ever compete and can we come watch?

RE: Insomniacs only
We dont do 'competetions' per se, since we are more concerned with studying precise techniques as opposed to creating a sport where someone is "winning". This is one big area where we differ from groups like the SCA. Since they do compete, it turns into more of a game. Where people are less concerned about wheter this was how it was originally done and more concerned with whats the easiest way to get a touch. The problem with that is that the point system the SCA uses dosent take into account armor. Since virtually no swords cut through armor, people had to develop techniques that go around the armor. When armored, this is what we do, whereas the SCA counts any hit reguardless of what part of the body it struck. Another fundamental problem is that the SCA uses rattan sticks- which are round bits of glorified bamboo. This means that there is no 'edge'. Another super important factor in real swordsmanship is edge alignment- ie making sure you are striking them with the edge as opposed to whacking them with the flat. With a round object, you cant tell. Even our wooden wasters are shaped and balanced like real swords and thus have an edge. So yeah- we dont really do competetions. We spar plenty, but just to see if we can incoporate the techniques we learn from the manuals into a fluid manner. Yikes- sorry for the rant.
