Lucasfilm Sues Gen Con!
|
There's some big news that just came onto the radar: Lucasfilm is suing Gen Con over issues with Celebration IV! While the case is stamped January 10th, this is the first I've heard anything about it. Here are the allegations:
1. Gen Con failed to uphold its legal obligations in terms of financial reporting, accounting and payments to Lucasfilm ($500,000 in damages)
2. Gen Con did not give auction proceeds to Make-A-Wish as they had agreed to do ($150,000 in damages)
3. Gen Con did not give Lucasfilm their share of the auction proceeds ($150,000 in damages)
4. Gen Con did this all unjustly ($150,000 in damages)
The suit will take place in federal court in the Northern District of California. Beyond Gen Con, LLC (the company) with its employees and officers, Peter Adkinson is also mentioned in the complaint although without any personal accusations. This is pretty serious stuff, so we'll have to see what happens.

They should file a class action action suit to refund everyone's membership....
I'm guessing these figures are for compensatory damages. Punitive damages can be many times higher than that.

Hum, I wonder what this means as far as a possibility of a CV
This totally sucks. Come on, not donating the proceeds from a charity auction! Talk about sloppy accounting. I've heard negative things about GenCon from other convention goers over the years, but this tops the list.

Yeah, that's exactly what I've been wondering. Will this derail CV? Or is there some way this could turn out to be good for CV, in terms of getting a better company to run the convention maybe?

Interesting. Though, I'm not sure that filing for Chapter 11 protects them from the lawsuit.

OMG GenCon sucks! They are so wrong to not hand in the donations for a charity. BAD SHOW!!!
ANyhow, as far as CV I asked Steve Sansweet at WOnderCon weather there was going to be a CV (W/o knowing about this lawsuit) and he seemed really positive and saying there was going to be another Celebration this year (Tokyo) and that LucasFilm is considering another location. SAying L.A. was TOO spread out . I put in my two cents and said I liked the L.A. COnvention Center just fine, but that having it here in SF would be the best cuz the SFFF wouldnt have to fly anywhere. He agreed!! He also said they were "In Talks" about how often to have the conventions as well.
