Yes tongue Martin's okay -- loads of political stuff, which tends to drive me nuts (I start yelling at the characters) but I have plans to eventually get beyond the first one.

I'm at page 270 right now. Maybe Martin's going for irony, but Jon is pretty much the only character that isn't a [I forgot if the mods smack people for using that title]. I don't mind characters that aren't likeable, but outside of Jon, Ned, and Tyrion I could really care less if the citizens get killed or not.

Keep reading. It's true the politics in the first book is heavy going, but it picks up a lot. And some of the ones that suck get theirs. tongue

Yes, probably tongue I like Jon, Ned, Arya, and Robb. Though I will try the second book, just to be fair.

Finished Game of Thrones a few hours ago. I started to enjoy Dany a lot more as the novel went on. Personally I find the plot dealing with the Wall and the Others and Daenerys a lot more enjoyable than the Seven Kingdoms civil war. I do have Clash of Kings sitting on my shelf, but I have a few other novels I want to read first before I move on.

The Dirk Gently Omnibus by Douglas Adams. It's got a different feel than The Hitchhikers books, but its not bad so far.

I like Dany, too.

Dirk Gently was, IMO, not as good at the Hitchhiker books, but still really good.

Still on a Kate Forsyth kick right now.

I just finished The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson. I've come to some conclusions.

1) Brandson Sanderson writes the best action scenes of anyone, anywhere. If his action scenes were ever turned into a movie, my god, they'd be mindblowing. Like the Matrix multiplied by Spider-Man multiplied by The Lord of the Rings to the power of Grayskull. For serious. Normally, I'm bored as hell reading action scenes in any book. Normally, I skim through action scenes. I reread Sanderson's action scenes multiple times.

2) Everything else in his books is just as good. Halfway through rereading Mistborn (followed by rereading Well of Ascension) I came to the startling conclusion that Sanderson > Martin. He's that good. It's a crime that he doesn't have the following that even Martin does. His characters are as deep or deeper, his world building is more subtle, he can be nastier - but he's far more subtle about it, and he's just a better author overall. Really.

So, read Mistborn and The Well of Ascension.

So the question is: if you were stuck on an island and could only take one series, would it be this or the Dresden Files?
