Another self-described Hobbit Jedi here. wink I was a fan of the books way before the movies came out... I wish I could just enjoy the movies as they are instead of nitpicking everything tongue Fine, take stuff out-- but if you actually change what is book canon, don't be surprised if people cringe unconsciously tongue

I've read the Hobbit, the trilogy and Silmarillion about four times, not to mention browsing, looking for something or just to brush up.

I'm quite a Tolkien freak and a pure purist... Be aware hypnotized

You've guessed already that I didn't like the films?

i had problems with parts of the film, too, but i also loved *seeing* things.

i have massive love for the books. he's a master.

LOTR just hints at things which lurk under the surface. and the silmarillion gives this huge backstory of how the place came to be. magnificient.

Has anyone here read The Tales from Perilous Realms? There are some songs from the Red Book of Hobbits. Songs about Middle Earth and also about Tom Bombadil. Truly brilliant.

Barnes and Noble University used to offer a Tolkien course. It was excellent and I have the documents somewhere. Maybe they will offer it again.

I haven't seen the movies yet (ok, a few scenes here and there) but when I heard that they cut out Tom Bombadil I was disgusted! frustrated Tom Bombadil is like freakin' Santa Claus! And he always shows up just when they need him.

@Jada have you read The Silmarillion? There is sort of an explenation of who Tom really is. It seems he is "older that the time and the world". Cool character, huh? happy

I haven't read it . . . yet! wink But I will.

That was the impression I had of him when I was reading FotR.

I thought he was a very important character.

I think one of my favorite things I've heard about Tolkien is that he would use a word and someone would say:

"That's not a word!"

and he'd reply:

"Oh yes it is!"

and they'd say:

"I'll bet it isn't even in the dictionary!"

and he'd say:

"Oh yes it is"

and they'd say:

"How do you know?"

and he'd say:

"Because I WROTE the dictionary"

laugh

OK, I think that was Tolkien . . . worried

LOTR is great, The Hobbit is even better but The Silmarillion is in my opinion the best of the lot grin

I can never decide if the Hobbit or LOTR is better (Silmarillion is out of judgement). I think they're just different. Three completely different parts, but still all of them essential for the magnificent whole.

I was 12 when I first read LOTR and I fell in love with it immidiately. Tolkien's way of writing can be a bit problematic at times, perhaps even dry. But he uses symbolic themes from European myths in a magnificent way. I simply love how he combines elements from the monotheistic religions with parallells to polytheistic traditions (such as the Celtic).

Oh, I love the movies and view them as one interpretation done by fan (with a lot of resources and money wink ). In some ways, the movies improve the story. In other ways it just doesn't match the quality of the books.

nah, raja, each to theirs. happy it was nice to *see* things rather than having to do the troublesome work of imagining. tongue

anywhichway, the stories aren't really dry. i love them. they are quite deliberate, i would say.

how about a favourite chapter of LOTR? i'm game.

i'll start.

my favourite is the rabbit stew chapter. and don't hit me if this isn't the proper chapter title. i love how during the whole journey they always have to stop for food and how lovingly sam does the catering actually. the food descriptions are awesome (yes, i like to cook, too) and make the whole setting very tangible and realsitic.

Besides, I wouldn't mind being on fire since my home is so cold wink grin happy .

Favorite chapter? Mine is The battle of Pelennor Fields. I like how it goes from despair to hope. As a reader I feel an immense relief when Aragorn arrives and that feeling depends entirely on the excellent writing that preceeds it.
