The hardcover of A FEAST FOR CROWS has now been released in both the US and the UK, just in case some of you have been visiting Mars for the past fhalf year. I have been touring all over the place and signing thousands of copies, but with the conclusion of my Canadian book tour last week, that's all done. I am back home again, and back at work.
With the FEAST served, next up is A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. This is the only place to find reliable information on DANCE. Please do not believe anything you might read anywhere else about release dates, completion, or page count. Until the book is actually finished and delivered, all that is just guesswork... and when it is finished and delivered you will read it here first.
A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will feature all the characters that you (and I) missed in A FEAST FOR CROWS. Jon, Tyrion, Davos, Dany, and Bran will all be present with major storylines, and toward the end of the novel Arya will appear as well, as will Asha Greyjoy. There will also be one new viewpoint character debuting and one old returning, giving me a total of nine POVs, plus the usual prologue.
The greater part of DANCE will take place at the same time as the events chronicled in FEAST... but though the two novels will run in parallel, there's nothing to prevent one parallel line from extending beyond its fellow, and the DANCE should indeed take the action beyond the end of FEAST. Just how far beyond remains to be seen, and will depend in large part on the page count when the new volume reaches the point where the last one ended. IF (and only if) I have the room, it is possible that I may drop in on a few more of the protagonists of FEAST towards the end of DANCE.
As of this writing, A DANCE WITH DRAGONS consists of some twenty-two finished chapters totalling 542 manuscript pages, plus another 100 to 150 pages of partial chapters, early drafts, scenes, and fragments. Some of that material will need to be revised, and of course much more remains to be written. My hope is to bring the book in at around 1200 to 1300 pages.
And before anyone writes me asking, yes, there is a third Dunk and Egg novella in the works as well. It's maybe three-quarters done, and sometime soon I want to find the time to finish that one too.
Anyway, that's how things stand at the end of January. I will try and update again around the beginning of April.

Hooray. Sounds like he is a bit more than half done. I also think it is neat that Dance may extend beyond the timeline of Feast. All of these narrators I think were to be expected, except for Arya and Asha Greyjoy. I am very curious to know what Asha is up to after the Kingsmoot. What I am probably most curious about though is where Tyrion has been. My guess is he'll be getting as far away from Westeros as possible. I wonder if he'll end up with Dany too? That would be crazy. Also I am very much looking forward to see what Bran has been up to. Hooray Dance for Dragons! Since Dance features all of my favorite narrators and it is rather mysterious what those narrators have been doing, I think this is going to be an excellent continuation of the series.

I was thinking on Ayra while I was reading Feast of Crows and it seems that she is being pushed towards something bigger than revenge while maybe not becoming a king or queen I do remember thinking in one of the previous books that she would do well in the nightwatch even though it's men only. She's wily enough and has the skills to lead people if she tried.
Although it could very well be wishful thinking on my part. 
As for Cersei's downfall the signs seem to be pointing at danearys to be ther one to bring her downfall in a direct way. But then again you see Cersei's reactions to the growing number of Tyrell's in her court how her fear and hubris ppush her into the actions she takes. Some of which are bloody stupid lol.
I have one question to raise up which I think is due to my bad memory more than anything else.
Is Prince Rheagar actually dead? In reading Feast of Crows thats what I started wondering I was fairly certain that he had died but then some unasked questions came up and I became confused.
Can anyone shed some light?

Rhaegar was killed on the Trident by Robert in the battle that preceeded the sack of Kings Landing.

The Song of Ice and Fire Art book is amazing, I highly recommend it.
And i would love nothing more than to see Arya become a huge character in Westeros. She is my favorite!

I think he's one of the 'mysterious fate' people....we haven't seen him since the sack of Winterfell, other than Bolton's claim to have his finger skin. So he could be anywhere.

Ya know someone mentioned earlier on this page if Rhaegar died at the Trident. Well upon reading Feast at one point Brienne is at that monestary talking to the high priest and he was telling her the story of Sandor(which I don't think is true) but the way he was going on about how he died and was reborn or whatever I was at first thinking he was going to be Rhaegar from just the way he was telling her his story.
Anyone else think that at first?

I definately think that Rhaegar is dead. It seems too sudden of a change to bring this character whose death has been established since practically the beginning of book 1, and considering how the actions of so many of the characters depends upon him being dead. He's no ordinary abbot, though, and I think that he'll prove to be an influential character before it's all said and done.
As for Sandor, though, I think that he's the new gravedigger at the monastery, and that he'll have a role before the end is over. Martin spent too much time building him up from a villain into a sympathetic hero to just throw him away so easily.
Speaking of which, I'm predicting that Brienne and Tyrion will be meeting up before they end. They seem to be birds of a feather: Social outcasts because of the way they look, not because of how they act; both are mostly benevolent and beneficient, and are both skilles warriors, as unlikely as that seem, and most importantly, both of them have a nasty habit of getting progressively uglier as the series goes on, typically through horrendous wounds to the face.

Hooray. If Dance was released in 2006 that would be the best. Probably it would still be late 2006 though, but then that would mean the next book would be around 2008, which isn't so bad.
