Yes, I know, these are somewhat of a young adult series, but they have always held a very special spot in my personal library. The book Mattimeo is one of my favorite booksof all times. The heroic creatures that fill these novels are ones i have come to greatly adore. And martin the warrior is up there in the banner.

I do wonder if these are books that many people my age enjoy, or if it is mostly high school or younger.

My favorite things about these books is the diversity of the characters, the languages, and the puzzles they encounter throughout their adventures. I always love fantasy books with puzzles in them tongue

So, anyone else a redwall fan? Also, did you read them in the order they were released (as i did) or chronologically?

Here is the site: http://www.redwall.org/dave/news.php

I read a couple of books from this series a few years ago and didn't mind them. Mattimeo was good, and I really liked - was it Martin the Warrior? Not too sure about the titles - but I found some of the others a little dull. The author seemed to fall into a bit of a formula. thinking I agree that the puzzles were well done, though, and I remember the books had good use of humour. They kept my younger brother and sister interested when I was reading them aloud, and that says something. tongue

Yeah, but I consider them light fun reads. Very very enjoyable, though. I wish i could go into the redwall world for a bit! I would want to be a mouse for sure. I have a statue of matthias on my desk right next to my monitor. It's so cool!

Mossflower is by the far best in my opinion. That last confrontation between Martin and Tsarmina...brilliant. Not to mention Boar the Fighter and Salamandastron. Holy Mackeral! I loved these books. In fact, when I was in grade school I wrote a thirty page fan-fiction set in Mossflower entitled, "The Battle for Brockhall." Really cheesy, but hey I was only like 10 or 11 years old.

I really enjoyed Redwall, of course, because it set the tone and it really appealed to my imagination. Mattimeo was a nice read but mainly because of Chickenhound. I loved his brutality and his need for vengeance.

The Bellmaker was great as well...as was Mariel of Redwall. Gosh, all of them were great. I loved 'em all.

However, the stories got kinda repetitious in recent years.

The initial book of the series, " Redwall " is in the upper echelons of fantasy literature. Asmodean gave me nightmares for weeks.

You're damn skippy he was scary. Cluny the Scourge freaked the living be-jesus out of me. I swore he lived in my closet.

I love these books. I've been reading them since well before the Pearls of Lutra came out. I especially love all of the first ten. Martin the Warrior was my first foray into the world, and so it has a special place in my heart.

Absolute favorite is The Long Patrol. I've read and reread that book repeatedly, and it never gets old. Just brilliant.

Salamandastron was also great. Loved the Bellmaker. That was a very surreal and magical book. It was breaking boundaries and reaching into terretory that the books typically avoid. It's often overlooked, but it is a favorite of mine. Mattimeo was fantastic, as well. I also greatly relished The Legend of Luke. I was waiting seemingly ages for that book, and when it finally arrived, it was everything that I could have hoped for.

I stopped reading recently. I believe that Lord Brocktree was my last, or perhaps Marlfox or Taggerung. Whichever of those three came latest. The stories started to feel a wee bit formulaic, and there was too much emphasis on riddles and songs and original characters and less on developing the story and bringing in new aspects and continuing the tales of established characters, which kind of alienated me to the whole thing. Well, I'll still always have my beloved original ten plus Luke to come back to on a lonely day.

One thing that I've noticed above all else is that Redwall is a feel-good story. It makes me happy to read them. It's like taking narcotics, only without the adverse side effects or the exorbitant costs. I have made it through many a cold winter's day sustained by the warmth of Mariel of Redwall or the Outcast of Redwall.

The villian I thought about the most was Slagar the Cruel. I must have read mattimeo twice a year from the age of 8 to 15. Such an awesome book.

I have all the books up to (I think) The Taggerung; of recent years, I confess I haven't read them as much. I should, though, because this thread has reminded me what good things they are. Like someone said, they have the "feel-good" factor to them.

I actually preferred the ones not set in Redwall. Mossflower, Martin the Warrior, and The Legend of Luke were all superb. I really should go and read them again . . . maybe a summer marathon is called for . . .
