My grandfather does all of these things. (Except chainsmoke). I've learnt never to lend a book to him.

I particularly despise the 'hold the book in one hand while curling the cover all the way around'.

I actually do love English paperback. The relief imprint on the covers are great. (Don't ask for it on German books...)
The only reason for me to buy hardcover ist 1) i want to read it NOW as soon as it gets out or 2) it's second hand.

Many of my paperbacks do look relly read, but that is something I appreciate. Good books get read often and it shows. To keep them from falling apart I use self-glueing foils (What's the proper english word?).

And then most paperbacks just smell better. blush
(Just open any place, plunge your nose in and try. I know I'm a freak)

I'm a fan of paperback, as I can take them anywhere in my bag, lightening my load and not taking up so much space. I don't really care how it looks, but for something I'm going to be reading over and over, I would choose hardback. I do wish that coffee table books with alot of illustrations (some of the DH SW coffee books that I've gotten) were hardback, and kept the pages actually in the book, rather than falling out like some of the paperbacks I've seen.

Maybe this thread should be in the Census forum?

I usually buy paperback, simply because they're so much handier to carry around. I have nearly 500 books, and am running out of shelf space as it is. With hardbacks it'd be even worse.

I'm not worried about wearing books out, unless they're out of print. Books are meant to be read, and if they show it, that's fine. Of course, one of my favorite places to read a book is the bath, and some have survived even a dunking!

I agree to some extent that worn books looks good since it does show that your are actually reading.

The leading of paperback is irritating. They don't leave enough space in between lines. However with a hardback the is greater leading and it's more comfortable, especially when reading a lengthy book like HP or such.

The book I'm reading and the next two I'm reading are hardback and I'm recalling why I don't like them. I like to lay on my side in bed and read, which you can't do with hardback books unless you're in the middle half of the book, otherwise it's too annoying to hold them up.

Also, I like paperbacks because they fit better on bookshelves

That was a pain yesterday holding up my Hardback Half-Blood Prince yesterday. Gets heavy after a while if you don't lay on your side or stomach. I can totally relate.

Yeah with hardbacks i generally read at a table or laying on my back in bed with the book propped up against my legs.

Paperbacks have an unfortunate way of seeming so small by times. I got Animal Farm on Monday, and it seems such a small, small thing. Great book, but it's small enough to be a childrens novel. Mind you, that's sort of what Orwell intended...

I don't see the purpose in trade paperbacks, aside from making me wait a year for Feast for Crows. They're just softer hardcovers ten dollars more than paperbacks. Ridiculous.

I envision a system when everything comes out in paperback, and if you want a hardcover variant you can place an order with the organisation, which will release, say, once a month all monthly orders. It can work with enough planning, for certain cases.

The whole point of hardcovers is to make the people who don't want to wait for a paperback pay through the nose. The bigger trade paperbacks are a good compromise for older people, such as my mother, who have trouble reading smaller fonts.
